This is the full process of releasing music on VHS in 2024, all the way from the origin of the idea to the creation of not only the physical box and tape, but also the media that was recorded onto it.

Thank you so much! I’m really glad you found it helpful, part of my motivation for this was the lack of clear information out there when I was going through the process, so I’m so glad it can help someone else to make something cool!

I remember seeing "video recorder recording farms", meaning rooms with metal racks packed with video recorders, all chained together to the source tape (don't ask me how) in order to multiply the master tapes. Yes, it was the legal way of doing business back then.

Wow I bet that was a sight to see for sure. Even the “proper” way of doing things had that janky yet practical edge to it

I still have a VCR. My main purpose is to take old original videos and capture them on MP4 with my Elgato card. Those classic recordings are irreplaceable!

Amazing! Digitising family home videos from the 90’s was the thing that got me into this whole rabbit hole originally, it’s incredible to be able to relive and save those old memories!

Back in the Reel-to-Reel audio tape era (post WWII-Early 90's) there was a product called a bulk tape eraser. It was a small box with a spindle and you'd set a tape on it switch it on spin the tape a rotation or 2 and everything on it would be whipped out. They're still out there and relatively inexpensive, and will probably work fine on VHS tapes considering that many of the studio decks used 1/2" and 1" RTR tapes.

Thank you for the info! I did find a couple of those tape erasers online but at the time of doing this project they were very expensive for some reason, it would have saved me a lot of time for sure. I’ll be dipping my toes onto some audio tape projects on this channel soon too!

Whoa! I was just looking at how much it would cost to get a VHS tape duplicated. This seems like the best route. Thanks for all the tips!!
@zaktaylor
@zaktaylor 5 месяцев назад
I was also surprised at how expensive it is these days, I guess it's because it's so niche. Also, I've recently been down the rabbit hole of Tascam 4 and 8 track recorders and your videos really helped in the process of going for the Tascam 488, real good stuff!! I've got a video dropping here soon about it!

@@zaktaylor ohhh awesome! I can’t wait to check it out. I need to try working with the 488 again. I haven’t had the best time with it so far, but I need to give it another chance.

i think i've seen that instead of recording over the whole tape since their prerecorded, you can use a strong magnet to erase the data on the tape. for me that definitely works to erase the begining of a tape. but my magnet isnt the strongest
@zaktaylor
@zaktaylor 6 месяцев назад
This is a great idea. I did find some really old “tape erasers” that were basically a powered magnet but they were sooo expensive. It’s good to know that a regular magnet can work for it too
