My family has three Jeep compasses I can confirm that. Only ones that I’ve seen the bumpers line up on is the wranglers and they don’t even have bumpers like that. Also on jeeps that rear joint he showed that wasn’t centered all the ones I’ve worked on they were never centered even at low mileage. So I’m assuming it’s supposed to like that
The guy renting out the car with 137k seems to be the smart one here, he's getting paid $70 a day for a $3k car! Its the one renting it that is in question for me...
Was going to say this but he makes a valid point because of his title status he got denied for a perfectly safe vehicle but this death trap has a clear title and it gets through turos systems
@@boxedfender4810 not even close to a death trap, this car should not be rented sure, but it seems like a normal daily driver. fix the wobble, throw an oil pan on it and drive it. who cares about door dings on a high milage rusty jeep.
@@blaiseflegg5573 after reading this I admit death trap was a bit far...fixer upper or project might be a bit more accurate and for the record it probably has fewer flaws than my daily tho I won't call it safer than my daily in anyway
its a 3000 truck that needs more than 3000 dollars worth of work vs the nsx although with a rebuilt title is a much cleaner car hes simply pointing out a flaw in the system that turo uses
U-Haul charges an additional per-mile fee with no "free miles". Turo's charges are renter's prerogative, but typically include generous "free miles". Therefore, if you expect to drive dozens of miles a day, that $19.95 can quickly exceed a typical Turo rental.
I disagree. My 1999 cherokee is in a much better condition than this, with 160k miles. Its mechanically sound (no the entire suspension hasnt been re-built) and the entire is in fantastic condition. Chrysler is not to blame here, its the previous owner. You can find a any vehicle from any company from any year in just as shitty condition.
@@rwduece122those were nice when they came out, and used until maybe a decade ago. But if you think it's nice now, then I'm guessing you garage it and don't live anywhere with roadsalt and/or never drove it in the winter
SirBudrick live in Colorado Springs, got 6 inches yesterday, sits outside and I daily drive it. Just took it on the highway and cruised at 80 mph just fine. The only thing that doesn’t work is the power door locks. It’s all about the owner, shitty owner ship leads to a shitty vehicle.
@@rwduece122 You do any kind of undercarriage treatments on that bad bear? I live in Upstate New York and had one done on my Jimmy. Shit is wonderful. They spray this like oily sandy shit all over the bottom of the vehicle and you just avoid doing undercarriage washes until after the winter ends. After that it starts to just sort of come off on its own from the heat and regular car washes. It's basically like a tar goo that catches all the salt and shit and keeps it from ever contacting the metal. Something to consider if you have an older vehicle that maybe didn't come with the best manufacturer's rust protection.
@@Thezuule1 Haven't done any specific undercarriage treatmeants aside from making sure everything was painted when we got it. That seems to work just fine for Colorado, we get a lot of slush and slow, but its a very dry climate, so once the snow is gone, the moisture is gone, thankfully.
I'm thinking it's because of where he lives. I agree to my Ohio wallet it looks expensive. A beat up jeep from a local rental place around here would be 50 tops.
For clarification the jeep is not the persons everyday car, it was purchased specifically to rent on turo. Also I consider a car totaled when the cost to repair it is greater than the cars value.
I agree it is definitely worn and has relatively high mileage especially for a rental service vehicle. To replace all of the bushing, and shocks/struts front and rear, the oil pan, and leaks... not to mention why the engine light is on is certainly more than the vehicle is worth. The interior is unnaceptable for any form of rental car. My opinion overall is this vehicle is about average for the mileage and areas it's been. That being said this vehicle should NOT be used in any form of rental service although i 100% feel if the owners of the vehicle sold it as is to someone the only unsafe thing i noticed was the suspension, bushings, and rear trailing arm.
Rob, sign your Nsx or Supra up on lyft. Take a look at the inspection sheet that they require be filled out and uploaded. Seems like Turo would benefit from a similar inspection requirement.
You don't consider a vehicle totaled if the cost of repair exceeds half the value, insurance companies do.. you aren't titling cars as salvage or cert of dest. This Jeep is just old and dirty, you can't file a claim over that. If your tow truck had a fender bender damaging the bumper and quarter panel, you would consider it totaled based on it's closest blue book value?
I suspected that and i wonder if there is a limit to the number of cars an individual can put on turo. Obviously there's no inspection before they can list it.
@@kzero1499 BS. That generation Grand Cherokee was / is actually a Mercedes M-class underneath. They shared the entire platform, with some suspension and drivetrain components. Make of it what you will...
This is an average person car who doesn’t take great care of the car but doesn’t crash it and has someone change the oil every bit. It’s not anywhere close to totaled, it’s just not worth much. I’d think half the cars in the world are in this condition
The jeep is worth about 4k and thats buy here pay here price . In plastic alone a shop would want at least 1500 to sort out. New oil pan probably another 500 at a cheap shop. Shocks, multiple bushings, seemingly several seals. What exactly would keep this from being written off by the insurance companies? ....this is AT BEST a straight to wholesale vehicle. To the point of ' I bet 50% of cars are like this' ...you're probably right. There are undoubtedly millions of cars on the road that are this under maintained. What a scary thought.
That's the truth right there. Didn't that make you just want to grab some soap and a brush on a drill and see if those would come out? lol And I'm not a real detailer. I just play at being one with my Turo cars.
I'm also a detailer. It wasn't that bad at all. That steering wheel isn't save-able though. 2 days ago, I had to do a full detail, on the most disgusting car I've ever seen. It was a Toyota Highlander, and there was petrified dog feces, meat bones, melted Skittles, and live maggots. I almost quit my job.
I live in New Jersey and where I live the average take-home for families is $485,000 combined just like every other state you're going to have nice places and bad places
Haha Somewhat true. I'm in NJ and there are plenty of great cars on Turo. I routinely check the app for new and interesting cars. Jeeps specifically are all over the app, so I'm surprised that Rob couldn't find a newer model year for similar cost. $70/day is way too high for this pile.
As an owner of this same generation of Grand Cherokee, I can say that the fuel having gone down that much in 30 miles is pretty normal. The gas mileage is pretty abysmal. EDIT: Also, that spot where it looked like a piece had been ripped out on the center console is where the 4WD switch should be
@@Mharve 1. You assume every scratch could buff out.. repainting would be well over 1k 2. Replacing the suspension parts at a shop would easily run several hundred. Repairing the interior and cleaning the entire vehicle would be another hundred + not to mention possible engine issues. You're insane.
I Paid spoken like a keyboard mechanic, I can tell you myself as a DIY car restorer, that’s totaled. I would not waste my money on that pile of garbage.
@Jeremy R You're an idiot then. I had a car totaled out simply from hail damage. It was still drivable, it was souly cosmetic, and it was still totaled by insurance... if you claim all of the damage.
Robert Torres there is probably a very small leak that the car doesn’t detect normally but when there is a huge change the car detects a larger change in pressure in the tank and thinks or sees there is a leak
Maybe there isn't any U-haul in the area. Finding pickups on Turo is pretty rare. One gal in PDX area has had a tough time renting out her F-150? Location Location though I suppose.
Absolutly! They should also have a Turo inspector(they don't exist as far as I know) make a list of work and cleaning that needs to be done before it is brought back for re-inspection. While I do not know of the existence of any Turo inspectors I wouldn't mind being a back-up inspector. The inspectors should also rate the car, perhaps internally strictly for Turos usage.
To be fair the CEL is on over the gas cap which just means it’s not on tight or screwed in wrong, but the filth of the car itself should disqualify it.
I drive with Uber and they required me to get my 2017 with 16,000 miles inspected at one of their service centers. Not even the 100 whatever point inspection from my dealership counted. I feel like a company that actually gives the keys to the renters should do the same.
For what its worth: Someone in my family has this Jeep as a 3ltr diesel with about 110-120k miles on it. Drives like a boat but otherwise - not a single major mechanical or electrical issue. Just the A/C needs some recharging and the steering wheel has one layer peeling off. I hate this car from a car enthusiasts point of view, but it runs just fine. You might have caught a really poorly maintained example which is still far from being "totaled".
What makes this thing totaled? I was expecting this to have been in a wicked bad accident and repaired poorly with extensive underlying damage. This just looks like an old jeep wearing out and showing its age??
I agree I was expecting the same thing the only thing that gets me is the amount of money he decided to pay for that jeep I wouldn't have paid more than $40 a day
I wouldn’t think Turo is strictly dictating what they will or won’t allow. I could all but guarantee it’s the insurance company Turo uses that says no on rebuilds. And it makes sense. Insurance companies give owners harder times with rebuilds.
Exactly, from my experience cars with Re-Built titles are nearly impossible to get full insurance on.. the same probably goes with the people that provide Turo insurance.
Elliot Davis the car industry is going to shit tbh dealers won’t work on anything older than 10 years old you can’t get a loan on older vehicles which I believe is also the ten year rule I had a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado and an insurance company told me the won’t give me full coverage because it’s older than 10 years I can’t imagine what a nightmare a rebuilt title car would be
Props to Rob for including the inspection in the same video, most car youtubers, even some of my favourites such as car throttle would have stretched the content Mr Spaghetti gave us in this 12 minute video in 2x 10min videos. 🍝👍
How is it that xj's hold up more than these wk's? I see plenty of xj's from all eras that are in much better shape than this. Just sold a 220k 94 cherokee that was in much better shape than this, interior included. Im thinking its the people that own them, but im not sure.
@@Thezuule1 Repairs at a shop would easily be over $1,000. This vehicle is barely worth $3,000 and you can make up 30k miles in a year or two... so not worth it.
If it truly is the same car, now You can't defend Turo because Turo is allowing it to stay on the platform. Which is annoying to me because they demanded my Subaru get a "safety" inspection because........I had the dealer replace the engine when a guest blew it up.
RU-vid: new video by Superspeedersrob I rented a car that was arguably totaled Me: well done Mr. Spaghetti man, you’ve won the next 12 minutes and 48 seconds of my time.
It's a 10 year old 4x4 Jeep that's been used as a rental up north in the salt belt. I'm amazed it's still alive and running. The biggest surprise of this entire video was that the interior was in as good of condition as it was. Most of the time, you get a gray carpet that's been matted down and turned solid/dark brown with dirt and muck. Seats with more foam exposed than upholstery, door panels and arm rests with dirt/skin oils caked on, etc.
@@stinky3shoes491 Rebuilt titles are cars that have been in accidents or stolen and "totaled" by their insurance companies. This would normally be listed in bold letters on the face of your title.
Yea, the engine light will come on for gas cap sensor. Had that happen to me in my 2013 Dodge. Super easy fix too. Go to a place, buy a new gas cap for $12 US, put it on in 10 seconds, the light goes away. Good for another 100k miles.
Has it occured to him that most cars get driven until they're literally falling apart and can't be made to run? I guess he's never ventured that deep into the 7th and 8th hand used market.
Okay so for your comment about gas....Jeeps are notorious for terrible gas mileage mine moves a qtr tank from a 30 mile drive. The check engine light is on because it’s missing a gas cap. Happens all the time. The suspension is for sure clapped happens to all grand cherokees after 120k, but that steering wheel 😷🤮 that’s disgusting at least have the decency to put a steering wheel cover on it before renting it out.
dropinbiking92 I agree I have always viewed him as the “spoiled rich guy complaining about things he thought he was entitled too” pretty much all of his videos are like this, but I stay tuned in for the rare occasional videos where he gives business and life advice

@@dropinbiking92 - It's not about what "normal" people drive. People can drive whatever they want to drive. But, if you do drive a rolling turd, don't rent it out to people! Or, if you do, at least have the decency to wipe the steering wheel off and replace the oil pan and suspension bushings. Don't tell me you wouldn't be annoyed if you checked into a hotel room with filthy carpet, a plugged toilet, and stained mattress. This is like that.
I see what you're saying about the condition, but I have the same Jeep and it has 155k miles and looks about the same as that one. It's pretty typical for those rigs with over 100k miles and used in the harsh winters
If you still have it. you’d be surprised how capable it is off road. Front and rear limited slip differentials. Zero drama off road. (New grand cherokees only have read lsd.) However that oil pan is concerning. Have fun
As a Turo owner with 7 cars on the platform. First. That's a rental, bumps and scratches happen. Second. The vehicle must be below 120k miles or will not be allowed on, just like the salvage title. Third. Turo relies on the renters to report check engine lights and such. Once reported Turo requires an inspection and/or mechanic bill.
Initially i thought Rob was badmouthing someone's jeep but yeah, i'd have to agree. That Jeep has no right to be on Turo. It's a beater car that hasn't been maintained in the slightest. I'd be different if it were a $25 a day rental Toyota Yaris. $150 for 2 days to drive someone's incredibly beat and abused Jeep is a total sham.
The oil pan isn't a big deal. Sure they'll get rusty and leak but then the oil stops them from rusting any further. Never ever seen or heard of one totally failing and dumping all the oil out. I've driven on ones much worse than that. Those bushings are fine, no large cracks yet. On their way out, sure, but not dangerous. Used bumpers run about $250 color matched, and no they're not going to be perfect. Who cares when you've got a 15 year old jeep?
That's not the point of this video, though. Rob said that all of the wear is fine, and it's par the course when you consider the mileage. He's just flabbergasted that Turo would allow such a car to be rented out.
Great video , very informative and helpful to people like me who have to rent cars quite often. I also was glad to have the pleasure to help Gotham Super Cars at an event in Phoenix a few years back. You guys run a professional operation and the crew was cool as hell to work with!!
I rented a really nice BMW on Turo, 1 year later rented the same exact car from the same guy and his car was destroyed after a year on Turo. It was bad I felt bad for the guy.
Armchair observer here. The rust seems normal for a New Jersey car with that amount of mileage. The mold in the trunk area is the scariest thing I saw in this video though. That can kill you.
I do inspections for Uber regularly and this car would fail on multiple points. The control arms are shot, you can see where the control arm actually flops around and inpacts the bushing which means you whole wheel is moving front to back in the wheel well as youre driving. The shocks are blown out,. The rear pinion seal is leaking all over and keep in mind the rear diff doesnt hold that much diff fluid, so when that dries out and over heats the rear axle can lock up while your driving. This is way beyond basic maintenance and the owner should be ashamed and liable for renting out this car.
I thought it was pretty snobby as well until he showed the underside of the car and the damage it has. Even if you ignore the rough exterior, the suspension being in the shape that it is and the oil pan having flex indicate that the car likely needs a lot of work to just be in acceptable condition. If someone gave me this car and I had the time to just do the work on my own I may fix it, but it would really matter how rotted the frame is. The pan having that kind of flex is worrying, as it generally holds better than the frame would.
@@ilikeboost4764 The not renting it out is a big part of it. You're not putting other people in your car for profit, or at very least I would hope that you're not. Having a rough car is something that most people go through at some point in their life. Learning what makes a car reliable and worth the time and what is just a waste of time is something that comes with experience. The Jeep he rented is a waste of time to fix. By the time you fix what is wrong, something else will be wrong. The labor cost and the parts out weight the cost of replacing the vehicle with a better version it itself.
I hate to be that guy, Rob, but the fact that you have a steady amount of followers, fairly high viewership (compared to most channels out here), and a decent business acumen, you shouldn't have to worry about being out $70 per day for two days (probably could have found a more known rental company and gotten a better deal). Let's face it.....over 80k views on the first day this video has been up and online alone, coupled with all of the other videos you have on here, you should be able to make that $140 back on video monetization alone in a day or three. Plus, the shameless plug for your luxury car adventures at the end of each video I have grown to know and love probably helps too :) Keep on fighting the good fight for those who already have everything.
You could most likely get a refund from Turo, they’re pretty good with that. This car is a POS. I don’t know how this car is on Turo, they usually don’t let stuff like this slide.
I rented a 2017 caravan with less than 50k for half of what he paid to rent that. If I showed up & they stuck me in a clapped out Jeep with 130k on the clock, someone would've gotten bit.... that's all I'm saying
nick I was wrong, it is connected, just hard to see. This is the last time I eat, listen to the wife, watch Rob, and try to identify suspension issues.
Thats what legitimate companies like yours should be illuminating on sites like turo. Youre never going to be able to compete on price alone, so service and quality of rentals is how you will get the competitive edge
Okay. I'm sorry it's not an immaculate 2019 range rover with 400 miles on it. That vehicle was probably on turo as well, but they wanted $800/day for it and only included 20 miles/day with a $2.75 fee per mile after that. I've rented two vehicles on turo, both were immaculate. However, I also knew exactly what I was looking for and what I was renting. I didn't look for the cheapest 2003 corolla or w/e I could find and rent that and be disappoint.
Its not cheap, that car shouldnt be $140 for two days. I can rent a brand new jeep from a local spot for cheaper. The car is in bullshit condition. Yeah we get your joke, robs a spoiled little girl. Hes not complaining about getting cloth seats and he wanted leather. It had body damage, check engine light, stains, missing interior pieces, broken interior pieces, etc. Hes not being a baby here, that car should be in some dudes driveway, not for rent, or atleast not for that price.
@@gangsterdisciple759 This jeep is $44/day if you go look on turo for yourself, I just did. Turo adds a 7.24 fee/day on top of that, and then you can get insurance if you wish. If you decline insurance it's 102.49 for 2 days. That's for week days..it's 5/day more during the weekend which would bring the total to 113.28 if you rent it 2 weekend days and decline insurance. You can find a brand new grand cherokee for cheaper than that? please provide proof.. Hackensack (which is where this jeep is located and Rob rented it) enterprise says 154.09 for 2 days with a standard suv, which you have really no idea what vehicle that will be. Rob should have went that route or just found a nicer vehicle on turo (which there are many) for a couple dollars more a day. But no, he found the cheapest thing and then decided to complain about it. If he would have read the reviews on that vehicle he would see that others have said in the past that it's in rough shape. I'm actually thinking he rented it on purpose just to shit on this guy and make a video 'oh turo sucks..come rent one of my cars for $1500/day with a $10k security deposit and 100 'free' miles'.
Had a terrible first experience with turo. Rented a 2007 Escalade with a CEL. It was stated that 600 miles is the limit for the trip. We traveled 173 miles when the axel broke and caliper seized. Turo would only tow the vehicle 15 miles and $5 for each additional mile, so $865 to tow it back to the original destination. Owner of the vehicle was mostly unresponsive because we were too far away from them. Our trip was very frustrating because of this. Took about 3 weeks for me to get a refund for 2 of the 3 days I paid for. Had to keep emailing support to make sure they didn't forget. I only drove the vehicle for 4 hours before it broke the axel. Paid for 3 days plus insurance. At the end of the day, turo needs third party vehicle inspections ever so often.
Ever seen rural-route mail Jeeps? They are just a Wrangler with a right hand drive conversion most of the time, but most make it well over 300,000 miles with no issues. Also, the 2nd generation 4.7 V8 (2008 and up) are pretty good engines! I have a 2008 Dodge Ram 1500 with a 4.7 Magnum V8, with over 325,000 miles on it, and I haven’t done anything to the engine other than oil changes and spark plugs. Rock solid reliable vehicle still, and the 545rfe automatic transmission has been just as reliable! Just kept the fluid changed every 40,000 miles.
Got salty they didn't let him list the nsx so he found a beat up car on the app to make turo look bad, and really rob you really couldn't tell from the pictures how the car looked or its condition
Should definitely be a mandatory inspection. Just got back from a trip and used Turo. Truck had a similar vibe to the jeep, would be nice to know what you’re dealing with before you’re on a mountain road.
