I have mostly grown kids and I do not work! two of my eldest are special needs! Im so scared we might be homeless because of renting prices... The house we are in they are selling...

This was a fun one, Clare! Raccoons have mixed reviews here in the States; some love them, some hate them (it is possible for them to carry rabies, though nocturnal trash pandas usually don't-you're to be wary of those who you see out and about in the daytime). They usually live 2-3 years in the wild, but like coyotes, they are opportunistic-they will raid trash cans as well as chicken coops. If you'd like to see the cookie bit, there's a guy in Canada called The Raccoon Whisperer. His wife used to feed them. 3 or 4 years after they married, she died of cancer. He promised her that he would care for her mother as well as the raccoons. Every night, when they're not on winter torpor, they come to his door and he feeds them low sodium chicken hot dogs, peanuts, oat cereal, grapes, and cookies. You can see them take their cookies from him and open them up. He has some raccoons over 5 years old now, one I believe he had 12 years (but they live in their dens in the woods behind his house, they're not pets. And Canadian DEM has checked him out, and has not fined him for anything, everything is above board. He won't take money; views pay for the $1000-1,500 / mo that it costs to feed them). The most famous one is Nov 2020 "mobbed by raccoons". But he posts almost every night, sometimes twice (which means this 65 yr old man isn't sleeping a full 8 hours). Just don't leave hate messages-know that some of them go several nights without showing up-they're good with what they find in the woods.

Ah, memories...when I was a trail ranger at the University of North Florida, my boss had to build several 15 lb. trashcan lids to keep the racoons from spreading trash all over campus ( not for lack of trying...)
