Earlier this year I purchased a Viking cue with a Siege 12.25 mm shaft. Hadn't even held a CF before purchasing, which might sound crazy but... I was committed and not going to lie, the new cue took a month of hard work to get used to. Had the same issue as you had with the defy, hand stuck to the shaft and I'm forced to play with a glove. I've been shooting the best I ever have. I've enjoyed the journey and I'm happy with my Viking!

Agreed… I had a Gen 1 defy and the finish was terrible. The gen 2 I have now is MUCH BETTER!!! Try a gen 2!!!

I can hardly wait for YOU to explain and demonstrate the 3 Times The Angle System. Thank for all your videos I have been playing over 20 years and your videos have made what others have said so very very simple. Please keep up the good work. If only you were my high school math teacher.

The 3 times the angle video is in production. I will post a reply to this comment with the link when it is done. Thank you for the words of encouragement!

Jacoby w/19” taper is the best feeling shaft I’ve ever played with. I own the V4.0 and a REVO and the Jacoby blows it out of the water to the point where I bought another V4.0 for my Predator butt and it’s “for me & imo” the best carbon fiber shaft in the entire market!

I agree. I am Predator player and currently searching for good switch from 314 shaft to carbon. Naturally I've first tried Revo but I dont't like it. Shaft action is excellent but I don't like sound and feel. It is way to light in front. It looks to my almost empty and that terrible high sound annoys me a lot. After that I've tried couple of different carbon ahfts and found Jacoby Black v4 best of all. Accuracy, sound, feedback... Everything is spot on. That was easy choice for me. Good luck to all.

I agree on this as well. Mine is the 12.3mm version, it's not the V4 but shoots absolutely great. I tried out several other CF shafts before settling on this one and, since it was my first CF shaft, I did need a bit of an adjustment period. After getting adjusted and the tip changed on it, I can't see myself ever going back to wood or really even needing anything newer or "updated" at this point.

My vote is for the Jacoby as well. Bought this exact same one after trying a few other CF shafts (J Flowers, Koda Bull, Spartan, and Rhino) and don't regret my choice one bit. Had to replace the stock soft Kamui Black clear with a hard Kamui Tan (Weird I know. I'm the only one of anyone else I shoot with that actually likes hard tips but the results speak for themselves!) and it made it seem just about perfect for me.

I agree 100 percent on the defy, i got a cynergy instead. If the 2nd version was out before i would have stayed with the defy.

I have had a Defy II for some time now and love it. It is familiar as my other wood shaft McDermotts although they do take some adjusting just like any different shaft. I play both with gloves and sometimes without and the Defy II has no issues with the finish like on the early version. I love the sound of a hit with it. I suspect that comes from the damping material they put in it so no "ping" sound. If you take it and another shart and drop them onto the table onto the tip the others bounce...,. the Defy doesn't which tells me that the secret is in the damping material. Mine has the soft tip that is standard. It plays very well and holds chalk like a magnet. Up to this point I tended to favor the Tiger Onyx. I thought I would go with the standard tip and change it out if I didn't like it but the new tip is moving into my favorite corner so not likely to change it. It holds its shape well, takes a beating, no mushroom issues, and plays very well and consistent.. I like the light grey ring below the tip as an aiming aid. I am a taller player (6'-1") so the taper is a perfect fit for me. I think it would be a possible issue for a short player. I love that it will never warp and is a very durable material and frankly that is the main reason I wanted CF. Since all of my cues except one are McDermotts, I find the balance matches my other McDermott cues so feels very familiar. I was surprised at how little time it took to get used to it. Yes the hit of a CF cue tens to be a bit harder which to me is an asset. A slower stroke avoids some "sins". Frankly I suspect all quality CF shafts are fine.... just a matter of getting used to them. One big item has proven to be that you don't have to pay attention to the orientation of the shaft.... they are equally "stiff" no matter which orientation they are in compared to wood shafts which can have issues with stiffness depending on orientation of the grain.

Mcdemott defy gen 1 is glossy the newer gen 2 has a dull finish. I have both gen defy shafts. I love both of my defy shafts. I have also played the koda bull shafti to had the same issues as you mentioned. Hope this helps others out there. Good luck with your games.

I have a 11.75 mm bull carbon shaft and I have the same problem with the English and draw. It also makes a noise when hitting the cue ball (the same sound as you would hear with a phenolic tip).

I played with an 11.8 before. Seemed to vibrate more for me. I don't know if it was the manufacturer or not. I've learned to stay on the beaten path. I personally think 12.4 - 13mm seem to be the best overall. But that's just my opinion.

The McDermott Defy reminds me of the crappy fiberglass cues that APA used to give out for free.

Have you tried the new Jacoby V4 yet? With the regular wood shafts I prefer using Jacoby Ultra Pro - Haven't tried out a Carbon yet but if I do I will stick with Jacoby's.

Have you shot with a Revo shaft? If so, how would you compare it to these? Nice video.

The predator revo shaft was the first carbon fiber shaft I ever played with. It was a friends and I played around 10 games with it. I was able to get a lot of action from the cue ball and the deflection was ver low. However, I didn't like the "ting" sound or feedback. In my opinion, it felt nothing like a wood shaft. Keep in mind that it was the first carbon fiber shaft I ever played with. I may have a completely different opinion after playing with carbon fiber shafts for years. I will be at the BCA World Champion this February in Las Vegas. I will have an opportunity to test the newest shafts from all the top brands. Testing and producing a video on the Revo is on my to do list.

I don't have Koda or the Jacoby, but own the Defy, Cynergy, Revo, XLR8/DFE, Pinnacle & one cheaper no-name. Seems you have the older Defy (which has the dreaded tacky issue). They have fixed and you don't have that issue any more. You can get this one sanded but it will not look great. For me too Defy is one of the best CF shaft.

That is great news! I willbe sure to check out the new Defy at the upcoming CueSports International Expo. I may be coming home with a new cf shaft.

@@billiards4U Just wanted to add, the older generation (the sticky one), you can send to McD and they will SAND off the glossy coat and graphene coat it for you. I believe all you have to pay is the shipping from you to them! Also good luck with your upcoming tournament that you mentioned in the begining of the video.

Nice tip. I don't own a Defy, but I have a Cuetec SST and I used to own a fiberglass cue (don't laugh). They both used to get sticky and I used to use wet-dry sandpaper around 300 grit and lightly sanded the shaft ever month. Worked great and never ruined the shaft.

McDermott shaved off the outer coating for me on my 2nd generation defy. Can shoot without a glove easily. I like the look better before. I have CF shafts from other company's & use a glove with all of them, so Having to wear a job is a non issue.

I use a defy and a Meucci carbon pro…..defy definitely has more power, but hard to control and easy to impart too much English
