It's been 2023 and I’ve wanted to try the BMW R 1250 RT for the longest time since it had its upgrades in 2021 so I took the chance to try out a 2023 model as I think about moving onto a tourer and bike that would be great for commuting too.

I have the 1200RT. At the last service the fella said that the bike had been so well looked after that if there were certain issues with the bike, it would be fixed for nix. I've 76k on it. So, always service your bike when it's meant to be serviced.. Thanks Procycles Hornsby NSW Australia. Will be going back there for the upgrade. And if I ever want a bike that has no power, can't turn, can't stop, looks ok and is LOUD so that everyone looks at me, I'll go the HD.

I went from a R1250RT to a Street Glide 107. Both are great bikes in their own way. I put about 10,000 miles on the RT in one year. I have neck problems and the slight lean forward was killing me. Plus I am 5'8'' with a 30in inseam. It seemed like the bike never fit me well no matter what changes I made. So I had to get something with an upright sitting position. This is how I rate them: Suspension BMW, Personality Harley, Storage Harley, GPS Harley, Hill assist Harley, Cruise Control Harley, Braking BMW, Highest Maintenance Cost BMW, Handles better in the wind Harley, Weather Protection BMW., Want to have fun with fellow riders Harley. If you are a social person Harley. I went to a couple of BMW Rally's. No offense to anyone but they suck and are boring as hell. Both are high quality bikes. At the end of the day if you want to drink coffee and talk about service intervals and lean angles around a campfire then get the RT. You can munch mad miles or km on both of them. In the long term if something breaks on the BMW get ready to bend over. That fancy head light assembly is $2400. If your a cruiser person get a Street Glide, if you want to haul ass and hit the twisties get the RT. Ride Safe.

Great observation on both motorcycles. My last HD was a 2013 CVO Road Glide and I rode it for three years and sold for 2k less then what I purchased it for. I also had a 2008 BMW K1200S to fill the speed itch and spirited riding. When I sold the CVO, I purchased a 2016 BMW RT. I am getting a little ahead of myself and I have been a Police Motorcycle Officer commonly referred to as a Motor since January of 2010. I have used BMW bikes as my work bike and I very familiar with them since 2010, in January of this year I transitioned from a 2018 BMW R1200RTP to my current work bike a 2023 BMW R1250RTP. A splendid scoot to ride. My current stable consists of a 2018 BMW R1200GSA and a 2017 KTM 690 Enduro R. I am now considering adding a 2023 BMW R1250RT to the stable. Today we had a training ride at work and the R1250RT does not disappoint when putting it through it paces on canyon roads (twisties). Prior to entering my career in law enforcement, I spent 20 years in the Marine Corps as a helicopter mechanic (UH-1N Huey and AH-1W Super Cobra) and Crew Chief on the UH-1N (Huey). I wrench on all my vehicles. Maintenance on the BMW is easy until the 12k service for the valve adjustment is needed. Storage I give to the BMW, I can store my full face inside the side panner and this is something that cannot be accomplished on my Road Glide (bags are to narrow). I life listening to music when I ride and BMW’s sound system stink and Harleys CVO system just rocks. I use a Cardo Pac Talk with JBL speakers in my helmet when riding my BMW. At work I use the Bose music sunglasses and stream Sirius satellite (channel 39 hair bands of the 80’s). Personality will always be subjective to the individual but to me the Harley is a blank canvas and one can customize to your personnel taste. Spirited riding and handling goes to the BMW RT, I am sorry the Harley is like driving a dumpster on wheels while it can be pushed when needed and it does a ok job the BMW RT just dances and grooves on the roadways. Even my buddies in the California Highway Patrol (CHP) cannot wait to transition back to the BMW R1250RTP police bike. At the end of the day I will ride anything with 2 wheels, I have owned more Honda’s then any other motorcycles mostly sport bikes and enduros. Enjoy the ride and ride the bike that calls out to you.

Absolutely right about the slight lean forward. I did not know that until I bought a goldwing. Kept the RT ofcourse. Two completely different purposes.

Just bought one and I can 100% say it's the best choice I ever made, it's not like I am touring everywhere but I do use my bike 7 days a week rain or shine. The character you say it lacks is the character I don't want because none of those bikes are useful to me, I had a Tiger and I traded it in for this bike and I never looked back, this thing outshines the tiger by far.
@BlueRidgeRider
@BlueRidgeRider 10 месяцев назад
Character is a euphemism for flaws. People declared Triumph and Harley lost their character when they became reliable. No bike is perfect but my R1250 RT does more things right than any other bike I have owned. And that’s more than 60 bikes.
@ragetobe
@ragetobe 10 месяцев назад
@@BlueRidgeRider I get that people want to feel good about their choices, I have friends with HDs but even if they admit in the UK, that is not a daily rider, my RT is a daily rider and it's practical with it. How people say the ride is boring or has no connection with the road I have no idea, I love it, it's fun and gutsy, and it always puts a smile on my face.
@BlueRidgeRider

I bought one of these! My’22 FLHCS is for sale. The trick to the quick shifter is to use it on upshifts when at wide open throttle. Use it on downshifts with the throttle closed. It does not like part throttle, up or down. It’s even smoother on downshifts if you are on the brakes.

The problem with the RT is the forward leaning riding position which becomes uncomfortable for shorter riders like myself. The bar backs are horrendous looking and really expensive.

"Personality" can be had with customization. Different exhausts, losing a lot of the plastic. Yes, BMW makes some fantastic bikes. As an example - I took a 2018 Triumph Bobber, it had already looked and sounded great. I made it better by heavily customizing it. The Air Box got replaced with Velocity Stacks, the CAT and Exhaust and front fender fell off somewhere on some road and were replaced with some straight pipes. The 2.8 gallon gas tank got replaced with a modified 3.5 gallon T-100 tank, the mid controls were replaced with forward foot controls, the head light got replaced with a grilled chopper headlight, the rear fender and rear turn signals got replaced with a half fender from Wunderkind Customs (Germany), the front turn signals, got replaced with some motogadget LED turn signals that I put right on the end of my handle bars, a 50 caliber Ammo Can attached itself to my swingarm and somewhere and sometime during this whole process of change: the Chain Guard fell off too. Stock bikes are BORING Whatever bike a person rides is an extension and expression of who that rider is. Customize it and turn it into part of you.

Did the perfect test ride on an RT back in 2012. Was asked to help run in the Olympic BMW motorcycles. A mixture of GSA and RTs. Picked up 8 from BMW Mottorad in Basingstoke, rode to BMW in Aberdeen, picked up another 8 from Aberdeen and rode them back to Basingstoke. Tyres and brakes all scrubbed in, all ready for their first service. I loved the bike then. I am in the same position as you Alf, I’m considering swapping my Sport Glide in for a 2023 RT.

For a BMW bike, the RT is the one. I owned 2 K1600 and no more. Too much can go wrong, if they are down. The RT is good all around machine. Probably the most reliable bike among all BMW bikes. My issue was out the door price. So, for the same price, I went with Honda Goldwing DCT Tour. When you deal with a BMW dealers in the US, it can be a challenge. Not many around and they kill you on parts and labor. Than, some don't even have a loaner for you.

I left my 2018 sport-glide for a 2019 r1250rt last year and I agree with you about the lack of engine personality on the RT, however the BMW is so impressive on all the rest that it would be difficult for me to go back on a H.D I could afford. The RT is better than the K16 because less heavy and more protective. ✌️
@beardedbiker2647
@beardedbiker2647 10 месяцев назад
The RT is a phenomenal bike, it does a lot of things well, it’s missing exactly what you said no feedback. My Harley had it, my K16B had it and now my Goldwing DCT also has it. I felt like you had to work the motor on the RT way more to get the feedback the others give by simply twisting the throttle. Now when we are ready for a lighter 2up touring machine I’m sure the RT will be in the garage but I plan on wearing my Wing out in the meantime 😂😂😂

This is on my short list of long tour type machines. My problem is that I have to find a BMW dealer, that has one in the state I live in. Perhaps when I travel out of state soon, I can get to a few larger Beemer dealers to see if they still have one in stock so that I can test the ergonomics out. Good review Alf.

Last month the motor on my Road King went so I was unexpectedly in the market for another bike. This one has always been at the top of my list for bikes to test when the time came. Off to the not so local dealerships to check them out. Low and behold, not one would let me test ride due to low inventory. Needless to say I went with something else. I recall reading somewhere that this was the most commonly used police motorcycle in Europe. From everything I've read and watched this is a great bike even though the BMW app seems to be a common pain point for most. I was just not willing to drop $30k on something I could not test ride.

I have been riding an RT1200 RT for years. I have not ridden the 1250 but with the extra power I can only imagine that it is superb. I disagree that it is characterless. It has plenty of character but no doubt it is subdued. Sure it’s not a Ducati but I don’t want a Ducati to ride distances. I do ride Ducatis at the track. I’ve ridden my RT for 1500 to 1600 km days well over a dozen times and some of these days were putrid as far as weather goes. And when the rides get curvy the RT will take you to the tires edge no problem.

Having came from a K1600B its very big and heavy, the panniers are deceptive, as they are too small, also the bike suffers from buffeting when your behind buses and lorries on motorways. Although the acceleration is very smooth although again the front wheel does tend to become very light at speeds over 80 mph ... in short I prefer my new R1250RT LE and its more fun to ride with a very comfortable ride. I don't regret my new purchase and think it's a step forward.😊

I have a 2015 R1200rt with 46,000 miles (I'm across the pond in the US). I haven't had a single issue with mine. As for personality, it is very much a gentleman kind of personality. It's calm, cool and collected. But if you want to push it, you can get the pegs down and ride until your license is taken. As for the side box. The strap looks just like mine. So I would not have any reservations. Side note, I also own a KTM 1290 Super Duke GT and KTM 690 Enduro. If you ask what I like better, I could not give you an answer. That's an urban myth I'm afraid. It's middle of the table, behind all the Japs, but above HD, KTM, Triumph and Ducati. The worst of the lot is Indian actually, which surprised me because the word on the street is that you choose an Indian over a HD if you want reliability. Of course these warranty claims take no account of the seriousness or nature of the problems. However its interesting that 77% of BMW and 75% of HD riders would buy again, with Indian at only 62%. Now that does tally with my experience. I don't know anyone who's bought an Indian again.

As soon as a text or any form of notification came in, the app would close. BMW want the app in the foreground, which was/is, a very bad design. I got round this in the past (pre-update) by using “do not disturb” and making sure that all the cr@ppy apps I rarely use had notifications off. That solved the issue until this latest update, where I am happy to report there are no issues, now. As for character, the same was said of the K1200S, which I bought new in 2006 and owned until 2013. Some people might like the quirks and foibles associated with other bikes, but me, I like the safety, the reliability and the quality of BMW bikes. I was out on the GSA, which I last rode in Oct 2020 when I started to want another bike (after the sale of my K1200S in 2013). What a great bike the GSA is, especially if like me you’re riddled with arthritis, have had a hip replacement (and need another) and want to be safe on the disgustingly poor British roads. On the GSA you don’t need to worry about hitting a pothole, yiu just glide over it, you spend more time enjoying and less time worrying about coming off.
