The key for being a successful DIYer is to evaluate a job like this from beginning to end and expect the worst case scenario that could possibly happen. In this case, it was a success, but there were countless instances that something could go wrong and there is no recourse because it was already at a point of no return. Yes, been there, done that and now I evaluate my limitation first before diving into any DIY jobs.

Great video! Looked this up after I got a $1200 bill to do exactly this to my water heater.

I learned. But should you twisted the screw first, before pushed it to water pipe on the other end?

To check for leaks you should open the valve and open a hot water tap in the house to expel the air at the top of the tank and in that flexible pipe. If there is a leak, you may not see leaking water at first because only air would leak out at first.

Nice job, your water heater looks relatively new. Like under 5 years, definitely under 10, because I'm surprised at how easily the nipple came off, even with that pipe wrench, they can be notoriously difficult to get out. Next time, don't put the pipe wrench on the nipple, you could strip the threads or crush the nipple, then you'd have a heck of a time getting it out. Get a nipple remover, it looks like a big version of a screw extractor, you put it inside, then you can use whatever wrench on the extractor, not on the nipple itself. You just lucked out here buddy. Take it from me. My 13 year old water heater hot nipple was not coming off no matter what size pipe you put on it, no pun intended. I ended up having to destroy the nipple with a step drill bit. Not fun at all. Also, its easy to remove the flue so that you have better access to stuff.

Thanks, I think, or at least I hope I have an issue with the nipple on the hot side of my water heater. It's not that old but I have another job coming that an extractor set would be useful for anyway. Hot water flow on all my faucets drastically decreased after flushing the heater out. Heater fills up very fast so It's fairly safe to say the cold side is working fine.

Thanks for the input. I was able to get the nipple off but I can’t get at the fitting for the dip tube. Any advice?

Ours is electric, so I just turn the water hurt off right?.... Appreciate your video as it preps me for what I'll be doing!

That "water line" inside the tank is called a dip tube. It sends cold water to the bottom of the tank so that cold water entering the tank does not mix with hot water at the top. You said you applied Teflon tape but the video showed you used a paste. Use a dielectric union to prevent the galvanized pipe to brass/copper fitting from corroding.

He said teflon tape then paste immediately.

What kind of special wrench was that you used to turn that nipple

It's called a pipe wrench. Sorry about the late reply

There must be an easier way to take the blue pipe out of the nipple. I was not able to and bought a new pipe.

Did you drain the water heater?

No. I left the water in.

It's helpful to drain water heater a little to let water from the pipes drain into the tank instead of spill on top of the water heater, especially if there is a expansion tank. Just a few gallons. No need to fully drain the tank.
