I Saw The TV Glow is the WORST Movie Ever Made

It’s not often that I say this, but there’s just some movies that suck so bad, they shouldn’t even exist. The Dark Age of Cinema brought us a lot of those. People could find some hidden gems among the independent films that debuted. But not all of those were good. And now we get a movie like I Saw The TV Glow. Audiences seem to be going nuts over this movie. But why? Was this movie really that good? Or was it Hollywood’s conditioning of audiences to accept garbage? Join me dear viewer, as I dive back into the dumpster fire that is modern Hollywood.

1. Saying that movies from 2009-now are almost all bad and lack good storytelling isn't just a stretch, it's downright false. If you don't even enjoy movies, why do you watch them? 2. Where are you seeing the shift in characterization for Maddy (not meant to be hostile, real question)? I thought she was consistently that angry counterculture kid in the first two halves and then perfectly alien and strange when she returns from The Pink Opaque (which, to me, is the sign of an arc) 3. And, speaking of arcs, why did you see a lack of one for Owen? There's a very obvious deterioration as he becomes less and less confident and more alone until the ultimate breakdown. 4. I'm kind of peeved at you claiming that this movie is a bad representation of the trans experience, because... You yourself aren't trans?? I appreciate your mention of Hedwig, but Rocky Horror is full camp and has zero trans representation aside from having a character loosely mentioned as a "transvestite." What's your claim to authority here? Do you just like those movies more and are annoyed by this one, so you insult the message directly? Is this just rage bait? Help me understand. 5. What's with the ableist remarks, dude? 6. The trans metaphor is pretty obvious. When they talk about the show feeling real, it shows a scene of Owen putting on a dress. Also, Owen's TV show counterpart is female. Those are the most obvious reasons, but aside from that, there's a plethora of things you could have noticed. It's fine that it wasn't something you noticed, though, because the message of the film is not universal. There's a target audience, and it's trans people. This movie is meant to solace and inspire them, hence why they're the ones who are getting it.

@@OffTheCover Those are 3 completely different things. And the trans undertones of the film aren’t there for the sake of being progressive. The film was directed by a trans director, and with a story that was told through a lens that was very personal to them. The film does not have the intention of pushing an agenda but rather making those in the target audience feel understood, and to encourage them to live their lives authentically, which I felt was the biggest message of the film. If anything, this movie is like a piece of art you might see in a museum. Not everyone will connect with or understand it, but everyone will feel something from it. And even if you disliked it, you should still respect the artist for making something they were passionate about regardless of what people might think.

what the hell does “woke” even mean anymore? First: it was being aware about social issues, Second: virtue signalling as progressive, and now it’s just “minorities existing and being a part of society”. It’s an example of a trans person who made a film about how it feels to be closeted. How is that woke? It’s just another person making art inspired by their lived experience. also about the characters “not clearly being transgender” you mean how the girl was quite literally trapped inside a boys body? How the boy grows up to be a man unsatisfied with his heteronormative life? the cinematography repeatedly highlights the colours of the trans flag ffs a film not spoonfeeding you its meaning doesn’t mean it failed. yeah a cis straight person, used to a certain breed of cinema, walking into this expecting a film like the It reboot is gonna be unsatisfied by this queer expressionistic indie film. imo mainstream filmgoers just gotta be more open to new experiences

Even if abstract emotional expressionism is not to your taste, coming in as someone outside the community/target audience with not much more than, "nuh uh, it was dumb and you're dumb for liking it and other movies did it better." seems like less of a critique and more of a expression of a superiority complex or deepset insecurities. I am the target audience and this film is so explicitly trans coded its actually sometimes feeling a bit like a freight train. @@snowy-g9p that's the cool the about expressionism. Swimming through all the amazing reviews on letterboxd and other videos on here, I'm so envious that the director/writer was able to execute their vision in such a way that so many people feel like it personally relates to them and their lives. As you say, repression, queer identity and especially trans identity are major themes that can and are being pulled on. And that is super valid and important. What makes this such an astonishing piece of art in my book is that even cishet folks were able to feel deeply imacted by the themes of toxic escapism and nostalgia, authentic identity and trauma effecting you even after the abuser is gone. I mean how freaking cool is that?! Too often do I see studios and producers using queer identity and themes predominately as a marketing ploy in media, and it's so dope to see a queer, trans director takes the fundamental human aspects of their identity and expressing it such a way that it captures not only the specific experience of an individual or community but something transcendently human.

The commenter isn't saying that cis white people are somehow worse at understanding/enjoying movies (that would literally be sexist[?] and racist after all), they're saying that this film is about struggles faced by trans people, and as such someone who hasn't experienced those struggles won't be able to emotionally connect with the message of the film.

I PERSONALLY liked this movie. I went in knowing nothing, having not even looked at the reviews. I also went in remembering A24's past movies. I personally really connected with this movie emotionally- It was almost forcing you to look deeper for a real meaning in it rather than serving the story to you on a platter. Yes, it was slow. Yes, it was confusing. Yes, I still loved it and I still saw a Trans symbolism. Also calling someone autistic as an insult is helllaa immature. I suggest you seek help for whatever insecurity you have that makes you think its okay to say that. Also, this is a personal opinion, just as your review was your own opinion which you are entitled to. Theres no need to call me pretentious or ignorant just because I have a different opinion from your own. Please accept that other people have thoughts and opinions that may be weird to you. Everything about the way you articulate yourself communicates lack of understanding and lack of perception. Copying the drinker as well, please don’t be an unoriginal thinker. This film isn’t for you obviously and that’s okay, but it is actually saying something fascinating about childhood imagination in contrast to adult reality. it is clear as you mentioned top gun to be one of the only bright spots of “cinema” nowadays, when really it truly is just a straight forward film that says everything to your face in the most literal way possible. We’ve seen too much modernist cinema if you ask me. Top Gun is a repetitive archetype, an effective one but rather stale to me at this point. Your woke hunting tendencies are definitely half justified, aggressive agenda of any kind ruins art & storytelling. It’s easy to project the whole label when the lead actor is black and wearing a sort of dress at one point, but it really doesn’t illuminate much “message” as you might think. You failed to formulate cohesive thoughts on what it might be saying, kind of an indicator that you’re not so well versed on this topic. Also I might add there are fantastic films coming out this year and some of the most profound pieces of cinema have released since 2009. This isn’t an issue of mere movie taste, it’s one of personal philosophy. Choose to be more open minded on how cinema & art in general can tell its story. Whether that be in a surrealist, abstract, meta, or straight forward manner. All are valid, but one does not have to love all. I found this film quite interesting and discovered some value beneath the surface of what it cinematically portrayed but I also found it to be super unpleasant, tedious, & lost at some points. It isn’t a linear storyline and it is most certainly not literal. And that’s not a bad thing. It reminds me of the feeling I had when listening to an eerie piece of 20th century classical music, it’s cool and fascinating but after a while exhausting and agitating.

This guy has the worst taste in movies ever. But, as soon as he said the word "woke" unironically, I knew why had had nothing valid to say. What makes the movies of recent decades, so bad is that they are so unoriginal and derivative. This movie was original. I missed the trans stuff too, but still found the movie gripping. i hate to break it to you, but unless you yourself are trans or neurodivergent, you really can't decide what qualifies as good representation of those groups or not, the same way i, a white person, can't decide what's good poc representation also, as someone who isn't cis and is queer, the metaphor was very obvious and felt like an incredibly accurate portrayal. it's also just generally about how it can harm you to hide your true self. it honestly just sounds like you don't like movies thar don't follow the three act plot and try to focus on artistry and message over big action scenes and funny one liners. and that you just don't like queer people, or the "alphabet mafia" as you call them.

I hate to break it to you but that's not how psychology and debate work. So you're saying psychologists can't decide what a good representation is? Didn't they teach critical thinking in your schools?
@coralinescousin
@coralinescousin Месяц назад
@@OffTheCover ok, a couple thoughts. 1: i was never talking about psychology. like, at all. i was talking about identity and representation and, more specifically, i was critiquing your takes. i'm genuinely not sure how my comment shows that i don't understand psychology. if you're arguing in good faith, then i would love to see how i misunderstood (genuinely). same goes with debate. 2: "so you're saying psychologists can't decide what's good representation" first off, did not mention psychologists. putting words in my mouth like that is not a very cool thing to do. but also, sort of? like, a psychologist that's a man doesn't get to decide what's good representation for women, cause, like, obviously. they're not one. but like, in terms of mental illness, they kind of can. without direct experience with a mental illness, you can't really decide what's good rep and what's not. but psychologists and people with close ties to mentally ill people do generally have a better understanding than other people, like you. 2.5: also, important to note, i was talking specifically about mental illness there, which is not what queerness is. i have a feeling you don't agree with that, which is why you brought up psychologists. but the psychologists and knowledgeable people that you're using to disprove my, and i cannot stress this enough, non-existent point, very much agree that being trans is not a mental illness. 3: i find it very interesting (and by interesting i mean a likely indication that you're arguing in bad faith) that you never really tried to give a rebuttal to my points, but rather proved my "outlandish, completely illogical" - and non-existent - points to be wrong, and then made a jab at me personally, which i personally try to avoid doing in order to encourage deeper talks. 4: for the record, i did learn critical thinking. i went to a montessori school for the first nine years of my educational journey, and it helped me immensely with my social, emotional, and intellectual learning, taught me things like how to have healthy debates and think critically, and helped shape me into who i am today. but also, why say that? like, you know i'm a kid, right? genuinely asking, what are you getting out of making fun of a child that wanted to partake in a meaningful discussion with you? bragging rights? a feeling of superiority? the satisfaction of avoiding to actually let yourself think critically, like you mock me for doing? i'm very confused. so yeah. if you want to provide me with evidence that proves that i can't debate and that i know nothing about psychology, then i'd love to hear it. if you don't acknowledge all of my points or you make another personal jab at me, a person you don't know, then i will not respond, because i have already had to deal with many people like you (namely middle school boys) in my real life and i'd prefer to spend my time doing things i actually enjoy. believe it or not, i don't actually enjoy arguing with adults who's only goals are to make fun of me and feel like they've won an argument. hope you have a good week, unless, of course, you're arguing in bad faith, in which case i wish every minor inconvenience possible to happen to you this week.

Dude it’s ur mind that is lost, imo the “woke stuff” is REAL people’s lives (other than you surprise, surprise). The reason it’s liked is because some people like to go beyond a movie that directly says what it’s about so they can search for that deeper, more emotionally impactful meaning. There are so many connections throughout the movie that could be generally related to identity, not just being trans. It’s important to have that symbolism (of trans identity & was made specifically 4 that) but I’m saying this to show you how it relates to anyone, no matter who you are. It’s the human experience. There’s joy in finding that meaning & then connecting to it yourself. While having the versatility to be seen through differing perspectives, like art. It's basically trying to metaphor how it feels to struggle with gender identity and that it's never to late to become who you are. As someone who is trans it makes sense why so many trans people relate to this movie it, just cause you don't understand the message doesn't mean that it's bad rep, most actually say it explains how it feels to be trans perfectly and I have to agree. It's a hit or miss movie, if you don't understand you won't like it or understand what it's saying. And they do have development, Owen (Isabel) at the end it's showing that he does get development and learns to try and accept himself, showing the message of the movie, it's never too late to be yourself. I hope this helps you understand it more, just cause you didn't understand doesn't mean it's trash, and personally I feel you shouldn't be saying what is and isn't good for trans rep.

The problem is the target audience of all new movies doesn't seem to include the 90%+ sane part of the population anymore. I get it. You are an ultra far left loon that wants to see the LGBT agenda pushed into every facet of life. You are the vocal minority. The rest of us normal people just want you all back in the closet.

Thanks for the explanation. I just watched it and was just so confused. I still think the movie is lackluster, way too slow, way too strange. Seemed like it was a horror movie but I don’t know what it is. It leave me feeling empty inside and sad. Will give it credit for leaving me feel depressed.

@@samuelmarquez3757 how it left you feeling after watching is definitely part of the point of the movie. living as your inauthentic self, suppressing your gender identity, hiding that you're trans etc, all leave you feeling empty and sad

I think the problem with why some people cannot understand the transgender message is because they are not trans, don't get me wrong there were probably some trans people who were a bit confused or people who aren't trans understood the message but I feel like this film tries its best to indicate those messages, I mean the film could be about finding who you want to be in life. I honestly love this film and will watch it again as soon as possible.

man this video is crazy cause you really don't give a fuck at all. you didn't even realize that jaden smith is not the same person as justice smith 💀 another note: i'm trans and i love this film. it's made me cry every rewatch so far. to a trans person potentially reading this who thinks it's too late for them, there is still time. you can become the person you were meant to be.

I took it as the main character not understanding his own self which was shown on the bench scene when he was asked do you like girls and he answered I think I like TV shows. He was so caught up with the show that he wanted to escape his family missing out on spending time with his parents even though his Mom was dying then she passes away then his Dad his friends disappear. Then he looks back at the show realizing it was pretty stupid and realized he wasted his life and has a mental breakdown at his dead end job. I think this movie is relateable to a lot of people and if you think it's the worst movie ever I think you haven't seen Civil War which I understood as well but was such a let down by having the trailer be misleading which this movie didn't do. The trailer let you know what this movie was about. So if you watched the trailer which I always highly recommend doing and weren't feeling it you shouldn't have wasted your time watching it. However maybe you did and it missed the mark for you but still calling it the worst movie ever I find hard to believe would be accurate for anyone but then again everyone has the right to their own opinion

I am not trans but enjoyed it. The message was clearly about letting time pass you by without fully living in the present moment. Even the posters on the side of the walls in that scene where Owen is passing through his high school hallway say things like "carpe diem." The way that time passes quickly for Owen signifies how he is wasting life in a miserable suburban hellhole, not living a life that makes him truly happy. This culminates in a complete breakdown at his mediocre dead-end job. The horror of this movie is wasting your life, which is a pretty timeless and universal message. You don't have to be trans to understand it, so I disagree with the users telling you "it's not made for you." It probably just went over your head. Basically, it has the same themes of Fight Club and Matrix, people feeling trapped by their unfulfilling lives. My critique of it is the same with all other "suburban life is bad actually" movies. These characters feel entrapped by lives that are relatively peaceful and pleasant --- lives that many people would kill for. It's a privilege. It's a perspective that comes from people who don't realize just how good they have it. I can empathize with the protagonist hating his life, feeling like he can't connect with those around him or like he doesn't belong in his body, but the shots of his pretty house make me think of worse conditions he could be in. It's an interesting perspective from the director and gives insight into middle-class American lifestyle.

Funny you bring up the matrix, because that movie was also made by trans people and the "red pill" was explicitly inspired by a brand of estrogen pills that was popular around that time.

Can’t really review a movie if you already have a biased opinion before seeing it. Taking the movie literally instead of the metaphor it is just speaks to your lack of media literacy.
