I get asked a lot why we shear our lambs.
So i've tried to answer it in this video.
Let me know if you agree with my points.

ABOUT ME
I’m 31 years old and I’m a sheep farmer from Ayrshire in South West Scotland, which is why I have such a strong accent! I was born and raised on a sheep farm watching my dad who was the shepherd.
At 18 I went away from farming to work in the city (something I still do) and at 23 (2013) I decided I wanted to do something for some extra money so I went on a sheep shearing course. The hardest thing I’ll ever do was learning to shear sheep. [shudders thinking about it]
I shore whilst on my holidays from work for 2 years and then in 2015 my dad died so I decided to get my own sheep so I could continue working with sheep as it was something I loved doing. From there it escalated quickly from my first 4 sheep in my mum’s garden to now running around 600 breeding ewes.
I shore over 15,000 sheep this season in UK and I also travel to Norway for shearing in March and September. (Covid messed it up this year)
A few years ago I bought myself a sheep pregnancy scanner and have been building up my run since then.
I watched a few farm vlogs on RU-vid and decided I could have a go and now here we are!
Thanks for watching my videos and please subscribe if you want to see more in future.

All the reasons you gave for shearing lambs are good. I’d add another one: you get to go over the whole lamb to see if there are any other potential issues developing. A question: is the quality of lambs wool finer than when they reach maturity or is there no real difference? Thank you, Cammy!

As a hand spinner, weaver, knitter +, the finest wool an animal will give is that first coat. They will generally get coarser as they get older. Having said that, a merino will always be finer than that of a carpet wool breed. It's what people have bred them to produce. Crossbred sheep will be somewhere between the breeds they are composed of. I didn't know about fine wool and fine meat, but I've read that the breeds with heavier lanolin have fattier meat. Hmm, now I'm wondering about intramuscular fat. "Wagyu sheep?"
@Joodster
@Joodster 3 года назад
I think that a lot of people took up fiber arts while in lockdown, which hopefully led to better prices for the wool producers. In fact, as I watch this, I've got a browser tab open to pick some wool yarn to weave into a blanket this winter. Trying to decide whether to buy undyed wool and dye it myself or buy the more expensive pre-dyed wool. Lizzie is a treasure!

I can see all the same style pants, the same style long tank tops, some kind of bands around your lower legs at times, and really interesting shoes (?). And even hearing about the different blades you carry in your pouch and why/when you'd use them would be super interesting to me. I like your reasoning for shearing the ewe lambs you're keeping and your 2 year olds. We had too cold wet n snowy long winters here in the Pacific NW back in the 1950s n60s to late fall shear. Had to keep them in sheds once the first freezes n snow came. Our winters r much milder now, fall shearing would probably work now. At least the holdover lambs n 2 2 year olds would be much cleaner than they were from the sheds n all the mud. Not as rocky n firm ground here. Goodonya mate for working as a police officer. I was im the same profession Deputy Sheriff until crippled by a drunk driver that was beating on his woman while trying to drive. Loved the crime scene evidence gathering n investigative side of LE. You r going to make a great dad, you know how to proudly love your wife, kids n your animals

Love to see that ewe leap “for joy! As she heads back to the heard. Your ten reasons sound legit but what kind of arguments to the contrary would another shepherd put forward? Why do they normally sheer in the spring? Hope you three are very well! And I am a potter in the US, I threw on the wheel all the way till two days before my son was born. Women are so much more amazing that we give ourselves credit for. I’m glad to see her sheer that sheep. She’s amazing!

Most farmers don’t shear due to cost. It would be about £1.25-£1.35 per head depending on ur shearer’s rates.

You make shearing look so easy Cammy, great idea to shear them. I have heard shearers say that sheep aren't ready to be shorn? eg ewes with lambs at foot you might want to shear around mid June, shearer might say they are not ready yet?

Reminds me of my first Marine boot camp "shearing" - and now 37 years later - I still get the near-same high and tight.
