No turning back now! I downsized MASSIVELY, but despite my best decluttering efforts & getting rid of about 90% of everything I own, I still have to live the same life & exist in the same body I had before this. Decluttering wasn't some huge reset for my life, like a lot of the influencers tend to say. Here's my story.

You nailed it. I was once really sucked into the minimalist thing. Funny enough I've noticed a lot of minimalist influencers moving away from the extremist approach or entirely abandoning the ideal. I don't judge them for that, people experiment or change. It just shows it's a trend and not sustainable for most. People want that shortcut to piousness through the lens of cool. I am a former Catholic and once a wanna be Buddhist and I totally started making the connection between this hyper purist view of detachment, cancelling desires, and asceticism with the minimalist mindset. While I do admire the examination of consumerism and rethinking American clutter/hoarding, it's gone so extreme and become this paradigm of perfection that is elitist. I still do find myself happier with less things but I don't want to live a bare lifestyle of neutrals and trying to get by with as little as possible just to prove something and appear aspirational. I like color, beauty, nuance, and coziness. One other thing I've noticed about minimalist aesthetics is it is very culturally superior. Like, if it's not Scandi or Japanese, it's not cool. And I like both design styles and incorporate them but I also think if you lean too into that it just becomes this kind of homogenized look that doesn't welcome other global influence. I'm a black woman and so tired of anything not from this very narrow lane being overly celebrated to the exclusion of other traditions. Anyways, I could go on about this forever.

Yes to all of this. I remember watching this one guy (can’t remember his name off the top of my head) who approached extreme minimalism with more of a fun, playful, experimental attitude rather than a dogmatic one, which I loved. And oh my gosh, yeah there’s so much to be said about the difference between the aesthetic of minimalism and the practice of minimalism. One can be a useful tool to reduce stress, and the other is just - broadly / culturally speaking - colonization by another name 🫠
