I sold my Porsche GT4 for a 2022 Mazda MX5 Miata G184 - First impressions [S3 E7]

MX-5 , you couldn't do better ! I've had them for 14 years , two Mk 3s and two Mk 4s . Top down all year round , not viciously quick , but fast enough for me , ( 84 years old now ) . In my opinion , the best looking car on the road , and that includes ' supercars ' ; the only car for me !

I just came across this video, and I enjoyed watching it. I have a 2017 Mazda MX-5, with the "truck" engine at 155hp (in the US, by the way), but I do enjoy driving it every time. The way the chassis feels when it's cornering is such a pleasure. Even in low traction conditions (wet pavement or loose gravel) it's very well behaved and easy to control. You said you traded a Porsche for yours. I traded a Chevrolet Corvette for mine. It sounds ridiculous at first trading such a car for a little Mazda, but I have no regrets. It's well worth it. May you have many happy drives with yours.

It's the perfect car to have fun without disregard for the law. I have a 1.5 and as a child I lusted after the Triumph Spitfire 1.5 and the TR6. Some modern cars make you feel numb inside but the MX-5 certainly doesn't. Great review and your English was excellent 👌

Just bought mine a little over a week ago. Same color but sports package with cloth seats. Added the alloy pedals and foot rest and all season floor mats. Great review! Had an SLK 320 for 13 years, but got too expensive to maintain, but was a blast to drive, even though it was an automatic transmission. Love this car! So fun to drive here in Florida, but would be more fun in Alicante, Spain, as one person posted, but I'm stuck with my sister-in-laws car during our annual trips to Madrid and Malaga.

Surprised to see this trade. I for real just totaled my 2019 mx5 club (brembo/bbs/Recaro and some track mods) 2 days ago. Hit some rain on the mountain and slid backwards into a ditch where I then flipped on the roof. Came out with nothing more than bunpsband bruises. I myself was surprised and quite thankful to be ok. The miata is an amazing car for the money that's for sure. We have a 718 cayman S w/PDK and APR tune to compare it to. The porsche is definitely faster and all but maintainence is high af and when something breaks you'll want to cry. We recently had a 15k repair that the warranty covered. If you can afford it the right way take the porsche. If there is any doubt in your mind get the maita. It does great on the track with suspension and some stickier tires. The stock brembo are actually adequate with high temp brake fluid. That is the weakest link on most every car at the track. Boiled brake fluid is an Achilles heal for every car at the track. To say the least the miata is no slouch one of the best feeling cars to drive. You won't stop smiling I swear.

My friends selling the GT4 was the smartest thing you could do. Those cars have such high gearing that in order to row through the gears to redline you will be breaking the law by a large amount. Plus as we all know it's much more enjoyable, fun and exciting driving a slow car fast than a fast car slow. I'm picking up a used, manual 2019 MX-5 Miata RF Club with the Recaro seats on Wednesday. Can't wait. I had so much fun driving the car on the test drive and it reminded me of my 2007 Ariel Atom. Enjoy.

It’s really pretty simple, you can pay more money but you will not have more fun. I love my 2020 RF yep would not trade it for anything else. Always makes me smile. There is reason everyone love this car. If you have never driven one and are thinking this Miata love cult is crazy. Just drive one. Put the top down listen to the engine, find some twisty roads and you will see why all the people are smitten. It’s really that good.

I had a mark 1 and mark 2 and loved them both it’s been 10 yrs and I need another MX-5 in my life enjoy

Hi Matthias, I have the same car- got it brand new Dec 2021. Only difference is I don't have the sport package so I have leather seats and no Bilstein. So, my impressions so far is very good. Negatives- the paint is extremely soft so you have to be VERY careful with it, especially when washing so perhaps consider a ceramic coating like I have done. The plastic door sill tends to get marked easily too when getting in and out of the car. The drop down soft top also catching the 2 head crash protectors (is that what they are called?) behind the seat headrests when opening and closing the top so a little mark on them at the bottom but not a big deal- under warranty. The car in this colour is beautiful- gets so much attention. I live in Alicante Spain so perfect car for the warm weather and 320+ days of sunshine per year here. I know its not a Porsche but when I'm in traffic even beside a Porsche or many other nice cars- most people are looking at my MX-5. "Que guapo!" people call out all the time.

So funny, I also live off of my investments and did the exact same thing to consolidate capital/lower my overhead costs in preparation for this bear market. Sold my 718 GT4 in February 2022 and now just have two bikes :) I had an ND2 MX-5 RF Club before the GT4 and also loved it, definitely want another one! Hate to say it, but it's way more "fun" than the GT4.

Miata is always the answer period 👊 great decision in your MX5 i bought my 2017 rf gt 6SPD never will sell its my second mx-5 my first was a 91 5 spd i loved that car had that car for 10 years was tired of ppl slashing my convertible top but when the Rf came out i had to get it its wonderful solved my problem with the convertible top.

2015 C7 Z06 for a 2016 Miata RF and $35K. Never been happier. Still thrashing my MX5.

3 months ago I sold my Lotus Elise S for the MX-5 2.0 ND. the MX-5 is a great car, fun to drive, easy to drift, consumes little, and unlike the Lotus S the MX-5 is full optional with Recaro seats, Bose sound system, climate control that works great, seats heated, blind angle etc etc.. all on 1080 KG.. after 3 months I'm very satisfied especially after the changes I made, Ecu tek map, Ohlins R&T, manifolds, Ulter exhaust + rear diffuser, OZ SuperLeggera..

Hello Matthias , glad to see you have a MX-5 ND2 aka Miata. I have enjoyed my 2016 Club soft top with Brembo / BBS package for over 5.5 years as my daily drive in 4 season Northern US. What I really like is the fact I can work on this car installing my modifications & doing the oil changes etc. I added an axle back exhaust & its active. So its quiet when I want but louder when the pedal is down ( Flying Miata Hush O Matic exhaust ). The other mod is a Verus Engineering AOS ( Air Oil Separator ) to keep the intake valves from getting carbon buildup. I keep my Summer Performance tires on a dolley in the garage as I just switched to the winter Michelins X ice 3s. I really love this car & the low end torque is what I use in traffic its quick. So it has been cheap to insure / relatively cheap to maintain ( mods are cheaper too ) & very reliable thru some of the worst weather I've driven thru all the years I've driven. Absolutely the best car for having fun for cheap. Enjoy your ND2 !

I love my Miata and even more so now that I have Porsche Boxster/Cayman power. But I’d be hard pressed to sell a GT4 for a stock Miata. But you’re happy and that’s all that matters. Just shows how fun a Miata can be.

Aber wie kommst du auf über 10 Liter? Wenn ich Motorräder in der Eifel jage, komme ich nicht weit über 8. Der öffentliche Verkehr und mein Führerschein erlauben das nicht 😁

I totally agree that the Miata is the most fun you can have behind the wheel for a very affordable price. If you want a incredibly fun car that puts a smile on your face every single time you drive it and doesn't break the bank, this is definitely it. I owned a 2020 for a couple of years and loved it. Now I regret selling it and will buy another one in the next year or 2, this time for keeps.

I had a NA 1.8 Miata, still one of my favorite car. This was 10 years ago. That car really helps build confidence in driver.

I like the no shark fin look much cleaner looking...wish mine did not have the shark fin. That antenna looks longer than previous years???

I've been debating the 981 Boxster S vs the MX-5 RF 2.0 for quite a while. I think the Porsche has a lot more composure and refinement but that makes it less fun and lively feeling. You can slide the MX-5 much easier than the Porsche at much lower speed. The sound is obviously great at high revs in the 981 but not so much at regular speeds - and to get to the high revs you have to be doing 80mph in second gear! You only get 1 gear change if you want to rev it out before you're over the speed limit and the clutch is very heavy - not great for daily use. To get to 80mph you will get to change gear 3 times in the MX-5. There are also very few to buy with the manual option - maybe because what is the point if you never really need to change gear? At low revs it feels more luxury than sports I think - a bit like a sporty BMW - big, refined, numb isolated feeling - you don' t feel the speed or road. The 981 feels quite slow and boring at low revs. The car feels quite big and heavy for narrow country roads in the UK. The excitement from the 981 mainly comes from the sound and how fast it is I think. The Porsche costs at least 2x the price for fuel, maintenance and repair so that is a worry. They both look good but the 981 looks better and has a better interior and more cabin headroom and generally more space. MX-5 is much better if you want to modify things like the suspension, breaks, tune, add a turbo or supercharge exhaust, body kit etc. You can tune the MX-5 to rev to 8000 with BBR and 220 BHP. However, maybe you don't need to modify these things in the 981 as it's fast enough already and has a much better suspension and brakes. The racing yellow GT4 is my dream car though looks and sound wise but I don't know if it's worth the expense and sacrifice. I would get the Spyder instead though. Do you think we are on the same page?

Miatas are amazing cars. I had a first gen 1990 model. They are great cars - you can’t beat the bang for the buck. Sorry you had to sell the GT4… hopefully the crypto market goes balls out and you can get a GT3 RS! ;). You will find that mods for the Miata are FAR cheaper than mods for your Porsche…and there are tons of mods. So have fun!

I also sold my Cayman 987 for a new deep crystal blue Mazda Mx-5 2.0 mechanical gearbox; it's a wonderful, easy and well built japanese car.

Hey, I did the opposite move. I had 2 mx5 nd (1.5L and 2.0L) for 4 years (2+2) and now I have the PDK 718 cayman T since july 2023 (1month+) both are very nice cars for the money you spend but the quality, the sound and the security feelings are definitly better on a porsche. the mx5 is like a karting, light and full of sensation while the porsche is more like a jet fighter, amazing and nearly endless power (if you respect the speed limits...) for the consumption, I have basicly the same on both cars (80km+ at 120km/h) wich is 6.8-7.3L so it is a very nice stat for both of them. Of course, if you drive the cayman in sport+ and pushing the right pedal too hard, it will goes up to 10L or more but hey, this is a personnal choice. What made me crazy on my second mx5 (2.0L) was the annoyings plastic sounds that appeared at 9000km with the roof closed + the paint is verry thin and the rockchips create quickly and easily marks on the front of the car and for a maniac like me, it is hard to see these damages on my brand new car but hey... it's life :/ I will see wich surprises i will get from the porsche but i am totally in love with this car because it is just my dream since I am a kid (since the 996 back in the 90s and the first boxter/cayman). I hope that you will enjoy this car as much as i enjoyed it during these 4 years. Regards from Belgium.

Hi Matthias, how tall are you? I own an ND but with my 1.83m I still can't find a good sitting position. Last week I drove a 981 Boxster (with and without S). Almost everything fits, but I don't really have the courage to buy it yet

ich kenne den aktuellen Stand des Fahrzeugs nicht. Ich fahre den gleichen und ich kann dir a) das H&R Stabi-kit für vorn und hinten und b) den Edelstahl-Endschalldämpfer von Ulter (ohne Klappe) empfehlen! Beides habe ich verbaut und ich denke, dann bist du zufrieden!Die stabis müssen eingetragen werden, der ESD hat ne ABE und ist eintragungsfrei! Weiterhin viel Spass! Eine sehr gute Entscheidung ! Ach ja - solltest du noch die Bridgestones drauf haben - schmeiss die runter! das heck ist zu lose und im grenzbereich schwer einzuschätzen. ich habe gute Erfahrungen mit dem uniroyal Rainsport5 gemacht, aber ich würde auch den Michelin Pilot Sport oder ähnliches empfehlen. Dann hast du ihm zwar das Powersliden abgewöhnt, aber dafür gehts richtig ab in den kurven. ach ja, mischbereifung auf den achsen vermeiden! da kommt der wagen gar nicht mit klar und schaukelt sich z.b. bei 120 auf der geraden autobahn auf!

Cannot agree more about how the ND behaves. It gets misinterpreted a lot, people expect, sharp initial turn in, however this cars teaches you PATIENCE. I also use trail braking to rotate the car. At t he limit it can be tricky, it's not an easy car to drift, at least compared to my M2.

I can’t blame you but I know it was tough. The truth is that the GT4 is a better car than the Miata. But not $75K+ better than a Miata. It depends on your budget.

How do you feel about getting a $10,000 Z4 3.0Si for a recession roadster? I know fuel and operating costs will be a little higher than the ND2 Miata but it seems good balance between Porsche Cayman/Boxsters and the Miata. Also here in the US we can easily get Corvettes for much cheaper than in Europe so they are often the bargain choice especially considering C5's. Mint C5 used to be $12,000 before Covid.
