Hey Jon you are welcome. Don't only look at this one though I have plenty of really positive videos about driving instructing. This only covers the negative side which is after all tax deductable.

Thanks for the useful video. I'm considering a move from teaching (after 15 years) to being a driving instructor. It's hard to get my head around the expenses part of the job and how much of a loss I'd need to take from my job to do this. I'm used to working long hours in a tiring job so I'm not worried about that bit but this video hits the nail on the head with what has to be paid for. I'd love to know the earnings that these expenses are against. Thanks for the video!

Great video i'm currently on a pink licence and just about to have 1st attempt at the part 3 Having bought a vehicle for training funnily enough a peugeot 208 petrol had to replace the clutch prior to starting lessons as it was shot, and even with the new clutch bite point is horrific for learners! So going on a pdi lease but even with all the overheads which ok are deductible I see all the money coming in but not able to realistically justify a wage lol. As it's all there to pay everything i;ve been paying out to set up.

Hi Josh. Great video, thank you. I'm only at the research stage but would love to do this. My mind gets away from me all the time and I've been looking at cars to lease for it, can I ask you, what is your annual mileage on your agreement, or even what mileage do you do each year being an instructor? Cheers!

Love your videos mate, very to the point and informative. keep up the good work. Do you think there’s enough demand for teaching students in an auto. As there are people out there that will only want to drive an auto. I’m seriously considering pursuing this career as I’ve had enough of the office life. Appreciate any advice Thanks

im looking at this too, im thinking that in about 10 years all cars will be electric, this means that all new cars will be auto. i think its the way to go
@davewhite768
@davewhite768 Год назад
But if you teach in manual your students who pass can drive both manual and auto. If your students pass in an auto, then they can only drive an auto. So it restricts what they can drive
@samboswell8959
@samboswell8959 Год назад
@@davewhite768 thanks Dave that’s true I’ve thought about that too. However, I think these days some people can’t be bothered to Learn the controls of a manual and or they don’t ever want to drive a manual so go for just auto. In addition to this, in a few years there won’t be many manual cars with electric vehicles taking over. I think I will start off with manual as the demand is higher for manual and then decide whether I want to do auto or both. Thanks for your advice much appreciated.

Great video, I’m thinking of training as a driving instructor. So based on a 40 hour week your clearing about 37?
@JoshRamwell
@JoshRamwell 3 года назад
Hey Mathew glad you enjoyed it. It really depends on how many lessons you can squeeze into that 40 hour week and it depends on if you have the students. If you have good diary management and enough students then yes you would get around the 37 mark.

Hi whats the name of the driving instructor app?
@eren1707
@eren1707 Год назад
Is there a maximum driving hours legislation? I used to be a bus driver and we had a 5 1/2 hour maximum before we needed a break and 10 hour’s maximum per day. I’m considering going for a job as an instructor but I’d want to work as many hours as possible to maximise my earnings as I know there’s a lot of cost to working for yourself etc. ideally I’d be advertising through social media and I’d want to be doing 6/7 hours a day.
@JoshRamwell
@JoshRamwell Год назад
Hey Erin as we are self employed at the moment there is no maximum hours. I know another couple of but drivers turned driving instructor and they are finding it more lucrative thank the bus driving but I guess that is area dependent. As for the 7 hours per day, it does sound like a fair number but is that actual teaching hours or from when you start from the house to when you leave for home? Only because there is a lot of driving between lessons. I reduce this by only doing 1.5 or 2 hour lessons. I try do around 5 to 6 hours per day because believe it or not driving instructing is very tiring mentally. If I did any more than that my concentration would drop and then so would lesson quality along with my reputation

Josh I’ve seen a few videos of yours now, and sorry to say your not very good at maths. At first I wasn’t sure if you workout your weeks to 48 to allow 4 weeks holiday but after watching this video I’m sure your making a mistake. In a previous video you calculated using 4 weeks x 12 months which only equals 48 weeks. I’ve checked your figures in the video and it seems you are still using the same formula to calculate your monthly costs such as insurance, car lease etc. So can you clarify that the monthly total is correct and than your weekly total is incorrect or Vice versa. Thanks
@JoshRamwell
@JoshRamwell Год назад
Hi Terry, if I'm honest the video is around 2 years old so I'm not going to worry about it to much. But what I can do is a just make a new video using 52 weeks instead of 48. Cheers
@terryatkins
@terryatkins Год назад
@@JoshRamwell 48 weeks is good in terms of fuel, earnings etc as long as people know it’s because you’ve calculated 4 weeks off for holiday etc, but in terms of insurance, car lease etc will be 52 weeks. I’m sure you could put together a decent video that doesn’t get to confusing but explains real world expenses and earnings. There isn’t many videos out there that covers the finances of a driving instructor, although I haven’t looked hard I only recall one other video from a different channel that’s also gone into it.

Hi Josh, Firstly, you are being ripped off with your insurance! I've never paid more than £450 a year and that's still a bit pricey! Secondly, You should receive a standards check for every badge. In theory, once in every 4 year period. However, this isn't always the case. It DOES NOT relate to your grade. Grade B's don't get more than Grade A's. This is a myth! If you are self employed, it may be worth considering ditching the Union and becoming a member of one of the instructor associations instead. 👍
@JoshRamwell
@JoshRamwell 3 года назад
Hey Tommy thanks for that. That's interesting about the insurance. How did you manage to get driving school insurance at £450 with 0 years no claims? Iregaedinf the grading you are saying it should be every 4 years regardless of grade A or B? That's surprising. How much is it to join driving associations by the way? Thanks Josh
