Had a similar experience where for two days I couldn’t escape spawn (I was pretty new to Minecraft) but once I finally got far enough on the nether highway I thought I was some some guy came flying by me with elytra and ofc I thought this is the end until he gave me a full set of mending armor and a mending elytra. The mobs were the biggest issue for me at that point so he literally saved my life and single handedly got me out of spawn🤣

And they lagged the server because they had terrible flash backs of other incursions, the incursions were where you tubers joined and their millions or thousands of fans would join, which would make people get kicked and have to wait long hours to get back in.
