@@Mvtrixx For me, seeing old equipment and whatnot disturbs me a bit because of how outdated it looks. If I look at old medical stuff, it's really creepy. I think of how archaic they are, what they are used for, how unsafe they look... The old procedures and what was allowed back when the equipment, toys, whatever, was used. But modern day equivalents don't look nearly as scary, because I think about how much we've progressed and stuff like that.

I think schools, abandoned or not, in any country would be scary at night. There's something about places that are usually full of life, sounds and people that get very eerie when they're empty. That's especially true when it comes to things related to kids (like schools and playgrounds), since they're supposed to have a sense of innocence. Add darkness to that, and you've got yourself a very creepy combo.

Probably a newly abandoned school in rural japan, many school is forced to closed due to well... Not many student/kid left since they all move to big city and leaving behind the more rural part of japan. That, and plus the all time low birthrate that's plaguing japan in the last decade. So yeah...

@@naimac1015 I feel "Abandoned" is just a tourist trap keyword, "Unused" feels more like it. Maybe is it actually unused, but the people how own the grounds maintain it for visitors and tourists, and you just have to rent the spot for a set amount of hours/days.

Yeah I agree. Everything is as you pointed out, pretty much untoched. In the principal's office the plants are still looking fresh and in the teachers' office nothing has been moved. Like they've all just vanished one day. Also, it feels as it's not as long ago since everything's in decent shape.

I remember having a friend from Mexico call me late at night into a Discord group chat, so I stepped out to the hallway of my dorm to not bother my roomies. Our group of like 5 friends got on to the subject of creepy locations like haunted ruins and the backroom etc... so I turned around and snapped two pictures down the hallway I was standing in which was dark except for the bathroom light and a red fire alarm light at the end of the hall. Two of them noped out of the chat immediately while the rest decided it was time to change the subject.

Paliophobia is the fear of old things. I know that the fear your talking about may not be completely that. I think the more common fear you feel when walking around a abandoned japanese school late at night would be the fear of the unknown, xenophobia. While this fear is normally lumped in with strangers and foreigners, the broader term is more just the fear of the unknown or unfamiliar in general. When in a place that might be familiar or at least as close enough as a school, when it gets to be night time, the place just feels slightly off and adds that unfamiliar part to where you are. The study of fears and why people can be afraid of certain things can be a pretty interesting one. Anyway, I did really like the video and would love if you talked about more Japanese folklore sometime in another video. Little known things that people from outside the country might not of heard, stories you grew up with, I would love that!

Kenopsia is the word to describe that feeling of emptiness of an abandoned building or any kind of empty place that once used to be busy, bustling and full of people. I would usually feel this way when I'm the last person to leave a mall when it's closing. Just the eerie feeling of a place used to be filled with laughter, noise and chat suddenly becomes quiet.

I had doubts this school was really abandoned (and if it was, it wasn't for a very long time) because I recognized the English textbook as one that's still being used very recently (and still used today). I looked up the school using the name in the principal's office and the school was closed in 2018 and is now a set studio that people can rent out for filming and events. So yeah, it's abandoned in the sense it isn't used anymore as a school but it's still maintained by a company. It isn't uncommon for abandoned schools to still be maintained and used. They're naturally community spaces. There are some in my old prefecture that are used for community events, festivals, and camps. I just wish Joey was upfront about it. :/

Oh what great timing! I just played the new Spider Thread update of Ghostwire Tokyo yesterday, that added an entire section in a haunted Japanese Middle School, and I had to exorcise Hanako-san, and the whole thing was one of the most atmospheric and creepy gaming experiences I've ever had. now imagine living in a building that is like this :) I live in a ww2 airplane hangar that only has a few rooms fully renovated, and our bathroom is at the start of a hallway. it's defiantly unsettling especially since I have seen and heard spooks at night. I think old stuff is perceived as creepier or scarier than the same things that are newer is because old places and objects have been through experiences, have history and store “energy” due to being around longer. Kind of the same as how a blanket that someone’s had since a baby has more love and memories “in” it than a brand new, freshly manufactured blanket. More is “stored” in older things.

Most big open buildings are llikely creepy at night. New or old. Japanese schools likely have the creepier reputation because they're more standarised in their layout/design. Sure, the locations of rooms may vary, but you always see the same basic design for the hallways, the classrooms, and the stairs to the different floors.

you reminisce about school kinda remind me of when i stayed late at school doing some activity... it kind of refreshing because most of my time there was just going in the morning.. and back home in evening but yeah there still lot of activity then... not a complete silent like this xD

Like what Joey said regarding Japanese schools, I agree, because here in Singapore we have a Japanese school in Changi, and I have been to that school for a personal tour from my late grand uncle & grand aunt(still alive) because both of them used to work as cleaners there, like I’m not even joking, the moment you step inside the school main entrance, you are totally not in Singapore anymore, you really feel as though you are really in Japan, the building architectures etc. So creepy & weird, like for example, the first room we saw was their arts & crafts room my goodness, then even the stairs leading to the basement like how enclosed it is, then in the basement like they have their gymnastics section etc. Just the corridor alone is creepy. This was back in early 2000s

It can be rented for stuff like events, movies, music videos etc. That's probably why its still maintained. As a school though, its abandoned in that aspect.

I am not lying when I say that you could only find this in Japan or some top 5 countries with good standards of living. If a school like this was abandoned anywhere in Europe, in 5 to 10 years, not even the walls would be standing. Nothing would be left in that building. People would steal anything...
