It is just a person thing. You don't have to accept sexist stereotyping. You can challenge it, as women, gays and lesbians have been doing for centuries now. The so-called 'nonbinaries' challenge nothing. They endorse the very system they claim to be against.

because different genders are good at different things guys are better at doing the heavy lifting because in ages pass we were the protectors of the family and know how to fight girls are better at keeping things neat and tidy because in ages pass they were the housekeepers who needed to keep the place clean and cook for the family guys are better at hunting, wood cutting, building places girls are better at cooking, cleaning, and giving a damn. what i find odd though... since we all evolved from cavemen, didn't the cave women of the past also hunt and what not? wonder what the explanation for that is i'm a guy and i want to learn how to cook/be good at it (mostly because my food tastes are unique and i'd rather cook for my family than my future wife only cooking for herself + kids if i have any) i'm also ocd as hell and need to keep things organized/everything has to have a home otherwise its a mess tl;dr stereotypes exist, just deal with it and move on

@@beautifuljazz1322 i use nounself pronouns (glass), and they are valid if used genuinely. using them to mock people is wrong but people use these pronouns because they fit them and it defines their gender. these pronouns are valid when used genuinely and not in a mocking way. it comes down to the users intentions. if they use the pronouns to mock people that is bad, but if it helps them with their presentation ect it is perfectly fine. im not going to fight you on this. they are valid pronouns when used *genuinely* by someone. let people use the pronouns that fit them and their gender. the invalid people you are talking about are the people who mock neopronoun users, not the people who actually identify with the nounself neopronouns.

for me, realizing that I'm nonbinary actually helped me embrace some of the traditionally feminine things I avoided for so long because I hated being seen as a girl-- I finally feel comfortable enough in my own identity to wear a skirt if I want to and it's honestly super freeing
@Mel-wn9gb
@Mel-wn9gb 2 года назад
You never heard of the centuries long women's movement? More freeing than putting yourself in a box just so you can wear a skirt.
@space_ace456
@space_ace456 2 года назад
@@Mel-wn9gb I don't think you understand, finding a comfortable box allowed me to be myself-- I'm not forcing myself into this box just so I can wear a skirt. I spent a long time dealing with dysphoria around the idea of being a "woman," not because of clothing (my mom has never dressed particularly femininely but is still certainly a woman) but because that label in and of itself didn't fit me. Because I was so unsure of myself and hated the label that was forced onto me, I avoided "feminine" things in general for pretty much my entire life, but now that I'm comfortable with myself, I no longer feel the need to avoid things like skirts or embroidery just because I see them as "girly"-- now they're just things I like that don't determine my gender. I am fully aware of the women's movement, but that was not the issue at play for me-- perceiving myself as a woman in any sense tends to cause me intense discomfort; I spent months coming home and crying on my bed wondering what was wrong with me because of it. I knew I wasn't trans, but I also didn't feel like a woman-- it's just a weird gut feeling that I don't know how to describe. Based on the other comments you have left on this video, though, it seems that you're unwilling to allow people like myself to be who we are, and if you feel the need to try to convince me that I'm forcing myself into a box when I try to share a positive experienxe, perhaps you should take a look at yourself and reconsider the way you spend your time.

@@kai_alex So what exactly do you mean by the 'binary' box then? I'm a native Mandarin speaker, and I am very proud to say that Mandarin is a non-gender language! He/She, even "it" are literally the same word! (all pronounced as tā) I remember when I first started learning English I find it so odd to have gendered pronouns. Been using Mandarin for my whole life and I can assure you that a language can work PERFECTLY fine without labelling everything/everyone with a gender :)

@@again7pyms actually, the difference in writing happened only after the New Culture Movement in China in the 20th century. It was because the leaders of the movement wanted to "learn from the west" hence they altered Mandarin to be more similar to English and other European languages, so they created the female version of the writing "her". Before the 20th century, all the writings between different genders are the same. (Even now if you use the original TA on females I believe no one will regard it as a "wrong" writing)

@colddekstar
@colddekstar Год назад
@@chiuharn-ching9997 genuinely did not know this, I was always confused when learning Chinese why there were gendered means of writing tā when it made no difference to the context or meaning, that's one thing I despise about English, the language isn't gendered whatsoever, so why are there gendered pronouns? A woman's T-shirt is still called a T-shirt, so why is it a woman's T-shirt? I know it's because it's manufactured differently to fit a different body structure, but if it's made to be different, why not label it as a different thing from the start if your intent is to make it gender specific? English is Germanic based, which has gendered words, only with a third, neutral gender, why this wasn't adopted to English outside of words like Blond/Blonde (which I understand is French) is strange, and even the direct gendered words that aren't pronouns have no difference in pronunciation, only in writing It's so strangely inconsistent, the use of gender specific pronouns in other European languages is because they have gender specific words, this was something totally unnecessary to apply to English, yet it was And to finish my rant, gendered titles These only started because other languages had them, and we adopted gender specific pronouns, however most currently used leadership titles are not gender specific, probably because they were created with the intention of only having men fill those rolls, so there wasn't a point, but European sexism isn't what I'm here to get into, there's terms such as President, Prime Minister, Judge, Justice, Ruler, Leader, Senator, none of these are gendered, however Emperor/Empress, King/Queen, Priest/Priestess, Prince/Princess, etc. all are. These are all positions of power, why are only some gendered? Even if the formerly mentioned titles were created with the intent of being male-only, why do we have female-specific terms for other positions of power? As I was finishing that up, I remembered we do have a term for a president's wife/husband in First Lady/Gentleman, however the term for their spouse remains gender neutral president With the absurd amount of inconsistencies within our own language, I don't understand the point of contention so many people find, considering the only gendered part of the language is pronouns, titles, and words that originate from gendered languages I'm sorry I wrote so much, I basically came in here intending to say "hey, I'm learning Chinese right now, and you just taught me a little fun fact that clears up some of my confusion", once passion kicks in, I begin to ramble (really hurts me when I'm arguing with someone, since there's often inconsistencies or a lack of structure)

I was born Intersex and was raised female. Joan (my mom) would always yell at me when she'd see me playing with my cousin's hot wheels and she'd force me to wear dresses. As a parent, I teach my children to express themselves. Play with any toys, they share their toys. They're old enough to understand that their is a category for some toys as boy or girl toys but they still play with whatever toys they want without feeling shamed for it. Same with whatever they want to wear. I do see them expressing themselves as the gender they were born as, for the most part, but at least they have that freedom to play and learn about themselves without me categorizing them. They're human things, clothing, toys, ect. and I feel categorizing them is what causes confusion because humans are too complex to be in boxes. I am non-binary, I don't care if people see me as a female or a male. I've received questions like that my whole life, from fellow children and adults, in my adult life. Or adults saying I'm just an ugly woman. I see myself as a mother and a father, at times.. but for the most part I feel I'm just me.

It's a tiny thing, but as a cis man, I found myself in a store trying out a scarf, only to realise it was labeled in capital letters "FOR LADIES". Instantly I felt ashamed and put it back in. I then looked at the men's options but they were few and all very bland. It was another click for me, earlier that week I had seen that chain I really wanted only to be told by a relative it was for girls. I know it's a tiny thing, but for the many times I gave up on myself, from the music I listen to the way I walk, I wanted to make a first step towards breaking free of gender comformity. So I went back and bought that scarf and I now wear it proudly. It's something small and it doesn't make for a great inspirational story haha, but if for something this simple I already struggled so much against peer pressure, I can only imagine what non-binary people had and have to go through. To Them, I give my sincere respect and admiration, you are a symbol of change for the better.

As a pansexual cis guy whose three best friends are non-binary, genderfluid, and transgender respectively, and who as of late has been dabbling in some light gender nonconformity, I've grown to legitimately get frustrated or even upset when my customers (I work at a department store) ask me which gender an item is for. Like, b*tch, *it doesn't matter!* Recently I was even asked whether a specific backpack was "for boys" or "for girls", and I kinda internally snapped and just said "It's for backs" and left it at that. I know that most of those people mean no harm, but it just gets *so* draining to perpetually be confronted with that kind of ignorance.

It's not that we should be bringing our kids up to be genderless, it's that we should be bringing our kids up to be gender limitless. Girls should be free to play with cars and trucks and play football and boys should be free to play with dolls and wear dresses. Girls should be free to be masculine and boys should be free to be feminine. That's how my hippy parents brought me up decades ago and how I brought my kids up. Kids who feel they are male or female shouldn't be told they are genderless the same as genderless kids shouldn't be told they are male or female. Nurture your kids so they feel okay that they are who they are when they get to the age they can realise what they are - straight or queer or asexual, cis or trans or non-binary. They will go through stages of figuring out who they are and won't know for sure until they are in their 20s. Bringing your kids up gender limitless will make them accepting of all the different levels of gender that exist, even if they turn out cis and straight themselves.

I completely agree! My parents didn't really seem to push me and my siblings beyond our comfort zones but they did seem to expect us to like certain things when we were younger. A commonality I see between your videos focused on the LGBT community is that all of these folks had an understanding of their identities before they even knew there was a word for it. I went through something similar when I was wondering why I had a crush on a male classmate when I was little and thought it was a totally original concept, since I was fairly sheltered. Even these decades later, it's great hearing these stories and knowing I wasn't alone there.

Same with boys; just because you like dresses or makeup, doesn't mean you're transgender or non-binary. True! And here for a side note on your comment: I would suggest you use "assigned female at birth" (AFAB) instead of "biological girl", as there are - as was mentioned in the video as well - more biological gender types than just XX/"female" and XY/"male" :) using AGAB or cis instead of biological is more inclusive for intersex people and just everyone in general, so just a heads up!

Yeah, but it also doesn't make you NOT trans. It's not about the activity. It's about why you do it, how you relate to it, and how you feel about it. Activity is sometimes done IN SPITE OF gender, sometimes REGARDLESS of gender, and sometimes BECAUSE OF gender. It takes introspection to tell. Going against the grain IS ABSOLUTELY a sign to start gender questioning. Questioning is healthy for all people, trans and cis. It brings people closer to their own gender, regardless of what it is. And if they are trans, they're going to want to catch it early. There's nothing wrong with wondering if you're trans and then concluding that you're not. It doesn't hurt cis kids to do this. A better version of your statement would be that your gender is on the inside, not the outside. That goes for trans kids as well as cis kids. Trans girls can like sports and trans boys can like dolls. It doesn't make you who you are.
@seronimo__7735

Flip side: If you're a biological boy, liking football doesn't mean you can't be transgender or nonbinary. If you're a biological girl and like dresses or makeup, that doesn't mean you can't be transgender or nonbinary. Trans women can like football, and trans men can like dresses.

I’m so glad they mentioned it. I have spent years trying to come to peace with doing what I do and presenting as I want to for ME, and NOT to try to substantiate or legitimize my identity for others who, honestly, do not know me and I don’t expect to grasp it. While I liked these interviews for the most part, I want to stress something: you DON'T need to know as a child. You can go until 40 or 50 while being relatively comfortable with the label you were assigned at birth, then try on the nonbinary label and realize it fits so much better. If you're questioning now, don't feel like you must be cis because you weren't stealing all the dresses in kindergarten. These people are just three examples.
@seronimo__7735
@seronimo__7735 2 года назад
Also, I want to reiterate that you don't need to use they/them to be nonbinary. The interview didn't really show that; two of the interviewees used they/them exclusively, and the third used she/they. You don't have to use they/them at all. You can use he/she, you can use neopronouns, or you can even just use the pronouns you were assigned at birth. So don't stop questioning your gender just because you don't like they/them. Or because you're fine with your name. All are welcome in this community!
@seronimo__7735
@seronimo__7735 2 года назад
And also, you don't need "dysphoria" (at least not in the traditional sense) to be nonbinary. Dysphoria is typically thought of as crying yourself to sleep every night because you don't have breasts, but it doesn't have to be like that. You don't need to hate your body either. You can just feel weird every time you're called a man/woman. You can feel like there's an emptiness in you, that suddenly goes away when you try on the nonbinary label. You can feel perfectly fine, but then trying the label makes you feel like an itch on your back that you didn't notice is finally being scratched. If you think the nonbinary label fits you, that's all there is to it.
@seronimo__7735
@seronimo__7735 2 года назад
And finally, there are many ways of being nonbinary. You can feel in between man and woman. You can feel like some of both. You can feel like your gender fluctuates or alternates. You can feel like your gender's completely off the man-woman spectrum. Or you can feel like your "gender" slot is empty. All of y'all are valid

The reason you didn't fit into sex stereotypes is precisely because they're just stereotypes. Nobody fits into them. That's what makes them stereotypes. Nobody is 'binary' to begin with. That's just sex stereotyping. Therefore nobody is 'nonbinary'. You're just like everyone else.

My sibling was born intersex, so finding out who they were was difficult for them when growing up. My parents are very loving and we’re like “yo child, do what you wanna do, as long as your not committing arson or something you can be whoever you wanna be” and so they just go by all pronouns and there gender? Well, if you look it up intersex is considered a gender so I guess it’s all good. We are all human and we all go through different things trying to figure out who we are and what feels comfortable for us as we grow up. Kids now a days are being exposed to social media and more toxic people on the media hating on people just trying to be who they are and it’s damaging for the child. For the next generation if we ever decide to have kids, raise them well by letting them believe what they want to, let them play with whatever toys they want, don’t force your opinions and emotions onto them to try and “fix” or “change” them because you know what that makes you? A bad parent. Like my dad always said “As long as your not trying to become a mafia member, be whatever you wanna be, do what you wanna do I’ll support you….. what do you want from McDonalds?” And yes, he said exactly that. I have a quote book filled with random quotes from my family or friends or random people and this was one of them.

This is very sweet :) I’ve always been curious about intersex experiences but I don’t know anyone who is intersex (or at least openly) and even if I did I’m sure it would be rude to ask. It must be cool to have a sibling who can share experiences with you and expose you things that are (unfortunately) not considered to be the norm. Much love to your sibling, you, and the rest of your family :)

@@user-cc4rn6om4i It’s all about how you perceive yourself. I’m non-binary and it’s been highly apparent to me for my whole life that gender is a spectrum. My outward appearance has been naturally very neutral for most of my life to the point where it was a 50/50 chance whether someone would call me “he” or “she”. Even today a lot of people can’t tell depending on how I do my hair on a particular day. Even my voice is naturally pretty neutral and always has been. As a result I’ve never really perceived myself as a particular gender because it never felt natural to me. It’s literally just how I am and how I’ve always personally been. Same goes with other nonbinary people. It’s how they are. Like it or not.

growing up, i would always notice the girls and boys sections in target and think about how it's more acceptable for "girls to dress boyish because they're a tomboy," but when a little boy wants to wear a dress or even a pink shirt, adults fear that they "might be gay or trans"

The thing that people need to realise is that feminine traits and masculine traits are not exclusive. ALL humans have access to these feelings and can express themselves however they wish!! ♡♡
@sandrorukhadze8707
@sandrorukhadze8707 2 года назад
Sure but those traits vary through sexes and masculine traits are usually expressed by men and feminine traits are usually expressed by women. it's not to say that there are no feminine men or masculine women but those are few and far between. Even those atypical behaviors for men and women is influenced by prenatal testosterone exposure in the womb. So this idea that gender roles are EXCLUSIVELY socially constructed is not at all true.
@monbub
@monbub 2 года назад
@@sandrorukhadze8707 That's bullshit. It's not biological at all, just pure gender roles. Femininity and masculinity are social constructs. Having a female or male body is not. If we grew up without gender roles, people of any gender would be free to do anything they wanted to.
@shortourt14
@shortourt14 2 года назад
@@sandrorukhadze8707 gender roles ARE exclusively socially constructed. You are conflating gender and sex. male does not equal masculinity (a term invented in the 1890s), male equals penis--and even that is a bit fluid accd to scholar Judith Butler.

@@monbub Wow, talking about logic. What you just did is that you assumed all of the opposite things without providing any substantial counter-arguments to back up your claims and started throwing blanket statements at me. I have a strong suspicion that you deliberately side-stepped addressing the points that I've made. Can you bring proper scientific evidence which shows sex and gender are completely unrelated ? most likely you won't be able to because all of these left-leaning theories have been based in the idea of social constructivism which has quaint scientific basis. All the political games aside, the idea that biology has nothing to do with our behavior is simply not true . It would be enough to look at the animal kingdom and observe continuity between us and them and track how they behave. On the other hand, I kind of understand where you are coming from, you are worried that these biological facts will re-incite sexism between men and women, but that reason isn't sufficient enough to disregard pure scientific facts and truths.
@monbub
@monbub 2 года назад
@@sandrorukhadze8707 you're the one pulling facts out of your ass. biology does impact how men and women act (bc of evolution), but its not to the extent where men are always/usually masculine and women are always/usually feminine. we only think we're supposed to act that way, but we don't need to. many people are living proof that it is a social construct. and they dont have any genetic mutations or anything like that, they are just average people. btw the idea of certain traits being masculine or feminine is definitely a social construct. for example, people like to think that men aren't emotional, but they have emotions too. they can also cry, but whenever they do, they feel ashamed of themselves bc its seen as a feminine thing according to society.
