I spent a day with school shooting survivors from Columbine, Stoneman Douglas, and Reynolds High Schools to learn what it’s like to experience a devastating attack on an educational facility.

Aalayah’s classmates had to go back to school two weeks after the shooting and they still haven’t cleaned up the crime scene? That is seriously screwed up.

It really hit me when Aliyah said that most shooters end up being students. They know exactly how school shooter drills work, and where all the students hide. That’s terrifying, and I had never thought of it like that. We need to rethink the drills.

imagine hiding behind your friend thinking its not real than he gets shot instead of you, then you have to hide behind his death body to survive. I cant even imagine how traumatizing it is.

Imagine having to hide under a dead body. These poor CHILDREN had to go through this.

My aunt was in the Las Vegas shooting, and she has never forgotten it. Every 4th of July, she retreats to her room, with noise cancelling headphones, and cries. She has PTSD and is spooked by loud noises. The event has affected our entire family. When you see a death count after a shooting, remember that every single number represents a family devastated.

I can't believe they had to pick body matter out of her hair... That is horrible

To think that aliyah probably wouldn’t have survived if she hadn’t been behind her friend is so scary. That one small decision completely changed her life.

A person who survived Columbine had spoken at my school. His sister was the first one to die. Her name was Rachel, and she was known to be one of the most positive human beings in the school. Before the day unfolded, he got into a fight with Rachel, and he wishes that he would’ve taken the blame during the argument.

Not-so-fun fact: My best friend/Roommate’s girlfriend is a survivor of the Parkland shooting. I’d say her and I are pretty decent friends as well. She has massive PTSD from it. She said the bodies prevented folks from leaving through the conventional exit and the shooter used the fire alarm to draw students out. I was at the movies with some friends including her when someone pulled the fire alarm and we had to step out, she had a whole breakdown from it. My best friend had to console her for a while before she calmed down. Sad that even survivors have to battle the demons they never asked for

i can't even imagine seeing your classmates, people you see almost everyday, just die in front of you.

That must be traumatizing having to hide under a person you see everyday that is deceased to survive...
@EnchantedTooWell
I live in Scotland and I cannot imagine how horrible and dangerous it must be to not even feel safe at SCHOOL, a place which is meant to be safe and secure and is a place for learning and education. The thought of having to hide under bodies or hearing gunshots is an absolute horror
@cassidytait5898
I go to the neighboring school to columbine and my current english teacher went through the shooting. She has opened up to us about how she has ptsd and has had to stay home on april 20th each year bc of anxiety. When I first learned about this event my stomach sank. And when i walked through the halls of colmbine for the first time for a color guard clinic, it felt cold and eerie and I could never imagine what this experience does to a person mentally.

Alayah saying “they needed to take human remnants out of my hair” and then Anthony’s face afterwards...you can tell this really really hurt him
