I spoke French at the boulangerie! 

I started looking for sourdough starter, but that was perhaps too much for the language barrier. I did end up with yeast though, and various other things from the bakery.
"Fresh yeast" is packaged differently, but is used in much the same way, though it is already hydrated. It definitely leavened some bread. The bakery bread in France is both so good and economical it's hard to justify doing it yourself, especially with nomad equipment.
Buying bread at the bakery is liable to get more expensive in both money and calories than just the bread though.
