I Stayed at Japan's Hidden Mountain Temple ⛩️ Winter Road Trip

People often romanticise the idea of retreating to a secluded mountain, to a temple or shrine. Now I can see why. (Even if the tranquility is somewhat disturbed by the presence of Ryotaro).

Hey Chris, it's Nate - the InternatioNate guy that interviewed you a long time ago. Still following your channel and loving your work! Hearing the guide's story, of how he used to live in Tokyo and finally found his calling there in the forests of the north was very touching. Almost got me a little teary eyed because I can fully relate. Anyway, I'm back in China now and just wanted to drop you a line. Keep up the great work! :)

This is my favorite RU-vid video ever! I've watched it several times and every time I get goosebumps! When the training session starts with the shot of heavy snow falling, sounds of the waterfall, picture perfect snow-clad countryside Japan, snow falling on Ryotaro, the sounds of the chime and the horn, Takeharu's Japanese chants and his life experience and that final shot of both Ryotaro and Takeharu in the distance climbing the mountain, along with very clever and beautiful choices of background music with your documentary style commentary, the video could not be more perfect. Thank you, Chris-san.

One of the reasons why I went to Japan alone is precisely because of the silence thing the old man said. When I was there in a lonely temple, in the woods or just having a walk in Kyoto on a rainy night, being alone is what made me enjoy it at its fullest. When you travel with someone else you spend more time talking to the other person or making sure they are following you or they like what they see, etc. If you ever go to Japan, go alone.

I think of this frequently, and often spend my weekends looking up how to do this. How to survive, grow food, build shelters, etc., and you should check out the Primitive Technology channel. Take a look at the Shojin Ryori cooking style, it is almost entirely vegan (with the exception of a few modern dishes as milk and eggs just weren't available to the Japanese Buddhists). Also you may be happy to know that shojin ryori doesn't use onions or garlic due to their strong flavor, which would go against the philosophy of balance by over-powering other ingredients. I have one cookbook but I hope to expand my collection. Also, vegan as well.

In the 6 months I lived in Japan as a student I had absolutely no idea this was even a thing. Thank you so much for opening my eyes to this, and I will 100% be doing this at some point. I think you should give it a go this summer.

I love the beauty of the snow falling in the woods in this video. It reminded me of one of the main reasons I'm working towards moving to Japan.

Beautiful, thank you for sharing this. The shot where you looked up at the trees and all the snow was coming down almost brought tears to my eyes. Sometimes it’s very depressing and sad the way people have forgotten about the natural world and being in the moment.
