I'd add that these unattended farm shops exist in the countryside in the UK as well - I've come across them in Wales, for example. Completely unattended, you just turn up, pick whatever you want, write down in the ledge what you took and put the money into a box (often left unlocked so you could take change).Those shops remain completely unmolested from what I've seen.

Veggie stands are also pretty common in rural parts of the US. I grew up in Wisconsin, near the Great Lakes region, and spent summers driving around with my dad going to thrift stores and yard sales. And on some small highways near farms an hour or two away from any big cities you could usually find a farm stand like that. We'd usually stop, get some snacking veggies or fruits, and eat them while we drove. They'd have the same trust box for the cash and veggies picked that morning out for sale. They usually weren't so nicely wrapped though.

@@UnderclockFGC Currently, I'm just waiting for covid to be over before I decide and plans for sure about studying abroad. I definitely haven't changed my mind about wanting to study abroad in Japan, though! I'm heading into my sophomore year of college now, and I'm hoping to study abroad potentially in the fall of my junior year! I'm super excited about that. But at the time of writing that comment years ago I had no idea what I had in store for me! A year after that, between Junior and Senior year of high school, I actually got the chance to stay in Japan for 6 weeks! It was truly a dream come true. It was everything I had hoped for and more. Watching these videos made me excited about Japan and really want to go there, and trust me, it did not disappoint. I took a Japanese language course with other international students through EF's program for 6 weeks, and stayed with a host family. I met some awesome people, and really felt like I had a truly authentic Japanese experience! It was humble, and beautiful. My host mom would make me a tasty tamago sando on weekday mornings, and on weekends she'd prepare traditional Japanese breakfast - rice, seared fish, umeboshi, & miso soup. On week days I would head out of our tiny house at 8am and walk to the train station with all the commuters, and hop on the 45 minute train ride into the bustling center of Tokyo. I'd get off on Shibuya station every day, because my language classes were in Shibuya just a couple blocks away from the scramble crossing. So it was really fun actually walking through the scramble crossing every morning to get to class! By commuting every day for a long period of time, I was able to relax in the morning, enjoy the beautiful suburbs turn into the bustling tokyo lightscape as the train whizzed by. On top of that, the commute made me really feel like I could live there! I honestly enjoyed every second of it. Don't even get me started on the food. The Japanese convenience stores are honestly the most miraculous things in the world. You can get a decent quality, instant meal for under $8 on pretty much and street in Tokyo since they're absolutely everywhere. Want a little snack? A 100 yen dessert? The Konbini gotchu covered. They're just heavenly. And that's just the cheap stuff. If you can explore around any city in Japan, and follow locals you can find some great restaurants that are very affordable. For instance, when I visited Kyoto with some friends, we were getting pretty desperate and hungry. Sure, there was good food around, but we'd eaten plenty of ramen and the usual food you'll find on travel guides and main streets. So we just decided to look around until we found a place where only locals were eating. Eventually, we stumbled upon smaller road, where a few elderly people were walking towards a building away from the main street attractions. We decided to follow them, and entered an awesome restaurant filled with only older locals! We got a delicious meal for around 800 yen that had udon soup, sashimi, tempura, 3 kinds of pickled vegetables, and a bowl of rice. Plenty to fill me up, and I've got a monster appetite! And all really high quality too! What I love most about Japan isn't the temples, the Shibuya Crossing, or Mount Fuji or anything like that. What I love is the little things. The respect of everybody for one another, the awesome flawless train systems, the konbini with super convenient food that doesn't disappoint, the local places where you can just sit down, get a drink) and talk to older Japanese people. Some say that the Japanese are very shy and quiet in general, but I'd disagree. Many times people would go up to me and ask me where I was from, and once I told them New York City, they would all want to know more about it. There are lots of people who are really interested in learning about other cultures, so don't be afraid to talk about your culture!

Ever since that trip I've missed Japan so much, and I would do anything to be able to go again. But next time, I want to go in a different season than summer, because it was hot as hell! And Japan is absolutely gorgeous in the fall because of all the maples and other bright trees, and the spring of course, for sakura. I'd love to be able to study abroad for maybe a fall-winter semester during my junior year.

There's one right down the road from me in the U.S. I agree, they're probably common all over the world, just not in most cities.

I saw one of those in a village near Zurich, Switzerland. Russian origin myself, I was very amazed by the amount of trust people have in each other in developed countries.

Probably a bit late but you do occasionally get places like this in the uk it just tends to be in more rural places

In the UK you do get some stalls occasionally in the countryside, but it's really uncommon, there's no trust in anyone.. (I know this as I lived in a rather rural area) Sometimes there were little stands selling eggs or something like that, but that was it. Its rather hard to get local vegetables actually, because even farmers markets often use vegetables imported from elsewhere, and the stalls aren't run my farmers themselves often
