I stopped buying clothes and found my personal style.

Today I'm chatting about the clothes I've stopped buying to find and define my personal style. I used to rely on collecting clothing and constantly shopped to stay "on trend", but realized that most of those trends weren't really for me at all. Nowadays I'm embracing a "less is more" philosophy when it comes to my wardrobe, and I've started to really figure out what my style is and what I no longer need to buy for my closet.
What are some pieces of clothing you no longer buy?

Well, indeed, I also need to stop buying all clothes...but specifically, I am your opposite, skinny jeans always and forever, I really tried straight legs, but they just aren't comfortable or flattering on me. That was a costly lesson, because I always faulted the model I had bought and kept searching for the "perfect pair"... You've really helped me a lot to open my eyes, so thank you very much, Christina. I'm so excited for you to be debt free, such a huge achievement ! Xxx

I'm honestly your exact opposite! I too consider myself a minimalist (kinda), but in order to really make my wardrobe look like me I realised I NEEDED color, I needed dresses and feminine pieces. For a long time I was in the "well I guess a minimalist wardrobe is just black/white/gray basics" thought pattern and let me tell you, I found it boring. Looks amazing on other people, like you Christina, but it's just not me. I'm glad I learned to trust my taste and realised I can have color and patterns and vintage looking details and still be very minimalist.

Paige, I totally agree. Practically speaking, if someone doesn't have at least 10x the price of a Chanel bag in the bank, #1. they can't really afford one and #2. nobody in your social circle is likely to care or be impressed. Plus you might very well just make yourself a target for muggers. I know of one popular influencer who has several Chanel bags, but her engagement ring alone is worth about $70k (she posted the specs once) meaning that her husband has megabucks, even though she tries to pass herself off as one of the common herd. A lot of her followers believe that she's one of their own, and think they should have the same stuff that she does, not realizing that her net worth is in the millions.

I just realized after several years of following "capsule wardrobe must haves" and "every wardrobe staples" videos that I freaking hate crew neck t-shirts 😄 I've been trying to find the "perfect white tee" for years but turns out it wasn't the tee ñ. Still looking... I love button ups so I've started wearing a tank bra with a shirt over it if the bottom allows it like shorts, denim, some trousers etc. Also looking into sleeveless crop tops that are so hot now (got one at Uniqlo to try it out a couple of months ago but it doesn't look good on me). In colder weather - turtlenecks and long sleeves that are on a tighter side as first layer for blazers and jackets. I'm also exploring tops that are a bit fancier like one shoulder top I got a couple years ago at Reformation and I love so I thought there might be more options like it. But I haven't bought anything of that kind yet. I'm still wearing t-shirts I already have in my wardrobe but I'm so happy to realize that I don't need to buy them anymore ☺️ I feel like it was a very important step towards my personal style and I plan to listen more to what I feel rather than to what is being promoted on RU-vid even if it's "minimalism" "capsule wardrobe" tips...

Also got a Celine mini belt that's not as popular here where I live, paid half price buying second hand. I have quit buying patterns which I used to obsess over. I realized with my hypersensitive overwhelmed exhausted nervous system they were exacerbating or even causing anxiety. I have always worn mainly all black but drool over some delicious color so now have mainly black, tan, cream, white some deep rich red/rusts, teals/mints/sage green, peach/pinks, and a few very simple patterns (stitch lines, dots, small roses) in all earth produced fabrics other than swim/leggings/sun shirts. My anxiety level drops with every patterned item that leaves my house.

My biggest issue has been the amount of turnover in my wardrobe in recent years - so I don't purchase anything I can't see myself keeping (and using regularly) for at least 5 years. This means choosing items that are high quality, functional, and suit my style. Making this a criterion has really helped me approach purchases with foresight. Even though I'm not always perfect, I've made way better choices.

There is nothing wrong with a 'simple' outfit. You'll look timeless and that's also great. I wanted to get a vintage Chanel bag, but that money. For me it's not an investment... I don't live in a big city where it's common to have/wear designer items. I'll feel uncomfortable. I have 1 YSL bag and I haven't used it once. How sad is that. It was a dream bag for me, but I regret it a little. The plan is to use it when I travel, but I doubt that I'll do that.

Their go to loungewear staple….I cannot stand the tight fitting feel and to me they are so constricting and uncomfortable. I wear loose, wide leg , lightweight, flowy Capri pants . Each to their own. Totally agree that others' essentials don't always work for you! For me, I absolutely can't stand wearing black (I only have 2-3 pieces of black clothing that I can't declutter for professional reasons) and I looove wearing color - however everyone is saying that you NEED to only wear neutrals to have a capsule wardrobe. That is absolutely not true! I have a total of ~70 items of clothing and 10 pairs of shoes for all 4 seasons while still having a fair amount of colorful pieces (and neutrals to pair them with). I also don't own a pair of nude heels just because everyone says you need them. Listening to my intuition when it comes to personal style has left me much happier!

I think for me I've realized how much of our identity can get wrapped up in how we look. Part of that is what we wear. Growing up wearing ratty hand me downs I was categorized as poor by others, though I never felt that way myself, eventually I allowed others view of who I am to shape how I viewed myself. Although I didn't have a concept of judging others as a kid, I do remember looking at the rich kids in our class, and thinking how lucky they were to be able to wear new clothes every year. Those kids happened to also be the most popular kids in our class. Coincidence? I think not. As a kid, the message that I absorbed was that people that had more money were better than me. It's about so much more than clothes. As I go through this journey of minimalism, I'm also figuring out who I am, and who I want to be based on more than what I have. In the past, I have seen buying myself nice clothes as a form of self care, and a reminder to myself that I am good enough. While I think it's important to take care of yourself and have what you need, I know realise that that my sense of self has become tied up in things that don't matter. Clothes and fashion are very important to me, and always will be, but it's more about self expression and taking control of the image I'm presenting to the world rather than how much I have. Something I rarely buy now are higher end pieces that are brand new. I buy them used, which is funny because not very long ago, I found thrift shopping disgusting. I think it was ptsd from my childhood lol.

I just came from an essential “must have” video to your channel and it explains why I overspent and wound up with stuff I do not really wear. You are so right about the waste of time and energy. My essentials are a pair of black pants that feel like I am wearing pajamas. I have so many jeans that I would never wear if I can wear these black pants. I have also worn dresses for my entire life, but now in my 50’s, they do not feel like me. I wear them in the summer to stay cool. My essentials are now my button down shirts( in a variety of colors) black pull on pants and a long cardigans or dusters. I have so many dresses that do not give me joy. I do like a good shirt dress though but it’s hard to constantly declutter because these dresses and skirts are from Reformation. I fell into the sustainability hole. It feels endless.I really appreciate you and a small wardrobe . You guys have helped me find my style from the chaos of prairie dresses and skirts.

Fantastic video and so true. I feel I have wasted way too much money on clothes only to wear them once, if ever. I am almost done with minimizing my wardrobe to only what I love, is comfortable and can work in almost every season. You are an inspiration. Thank you for your advice. 👏💕

You are quite endearing, shy but confident and learning about yourself, it was nice watching your video, I used to be a horder and would buy every colour in a dress or top i liked and wear perhaps one or none of them, I recently felt so overwhelmed by my clutter and have been binge watching declutter videos, I got rid of around 80% of what i owned, instead of buying more things i am now wearing what i do have, i have so much less and i love the things i have, they are organised and i can find evrything straight away, other good habits are falling into place naturaly, it feels so refreshing

Hi Christina, your video popped up in my recommendations. Happy that I clicked on it, as I feel I have found a peer! For years I have been trying colors and clothes that people said were a necessity or on trend. I no longer listen to that and happily wear the clothes I like (black, white, grey and a bit of beige and casual style) It’s liberating! Liked and subscribed of course! Will check out your other videos later today. First going to donate those high heels that I have been keeping in my closet for years and never wear… 😄 Many greetings from The Netherlands 🇳🇱

I feel the same way about colors. I do like them but I almost never reach for them! I wear all black like 90% of the time and that’s what I’m comfortable with. I do also wear gray a lot.

This is the best conversation...I would buy items "just in case" and then they would sit in closet since half the time when I go out its just to run errands and who dresses up for that? Even working from home you can dress casual in a video call. Thank you for the video!

Backpack girl here too 😉 lovin this vid.. Really great advice!!! Gotta say I’m with you on all these items. I came to the realization several years ago that I just don’t have a need to wear dresses skirts and heels or anything that makes me feel uncomfortable. I spend a lot of my days outside in the Canadian Rockies and they just don’t fit my lifestyle. So have not purchased these things in many years now and have rid myself of what I for some reason was hanging onto. Having only the items that fit my lifestyle is all I need. I never really purchase new items as I know what I like, I know what I will wear and when I do make the rare purchase I focus on quality and always ask will it fit my lifestyle! ☮️ ❤️

I’m trying and struggling to be happy with my closet the way it is. I have a lot of beautiful things that I love but I relate so much to the chasing the next item that will make my wardrobe “perfect”. More will never be enough. I know this rationally but sometimes the need is overwhelming and I say to myself “just this one more thing, then I’ll stop spending “. Your channel has a really great genuine message and I continue to watch your videos when I’m feeling that need come up again. Thank you 🙏🏼 Keep up the great work!

Love this! I'm with you 100% on buying colors. My wardrobe is all black with a few greys. It's been like that ever since high school. But for awhile I bought items in a navy blue thinking "oh it's really close to black, I will probs wear it!". Lo and behold, I never ever did. So I do not buy navy blue anymore :)

I love your channel! I’ve been purging my closet along with you. I no longer buy white pants and button up shirts. Every time I wear white bottoms at the sports medicine clinic where I work, I immediately regret it because I’m always on the floor demoing an exercise and they get ridiculously dirty. I also feel too restricted when I wear button up shirts, finally donated my last one!

Your realization was spot on. I am always giving things away because I don't feel comfortable, it doesn't fit right or bring me joy. Since I am now more in tune to my likes and dislikes, I'm more selective with my clothes when it comes to material, fitting my lifestyle, and my desire to wear them over and over again. I also want to save more money and can't see spending so much on clothing anymore so I am becoming familiar with the life of thrifting. As far as heels....once in five years.

After Covid hit... I realized that I did not have enough of the clothing that I needed. I owned only one pair of joggers and I would wear them almost every day to walk dogs and then take them off... I was not able to buy anything when Covid was full blown. After it got better... I went out and bought lots and lots of joggers which is what I usually need to wear more of at this point in my life. I was very very suprised to see that you gave up colors because knowing your best colors is also about minimalism. I see the color palette your attracted to... but I think you would look great in a little bit of color.

Christina, I love seeing how far you've come in only a year with your closet and appreciate your raw transparency about a fantasy self and these "treats" we think we need but aren't "you." I bet it feels like such a relief to have a uniform that you're confident and comfortable in. I wonder, do you know your Kibbe type and did that help you address things that are a fantasy self vs. what you tend to gravitate towards?

Happy for you. I'm not getting rid of my stuff though (I understand you are not saying to). I paid cash not credit and worked 40 hrs. a week so to me I earned my items. But it makes sense if you don't like all those things don't buy them. For years I avoided RU-vid bc it does make you want more stuff...which is true.

It really just clicked in my noggin on that what you watch dictates/heavily influences what you buy and your overall lifestyle. I mean I know that’s common knowledge, but you know when you know it but kinda just put it in the back of your head and leave it there kinda thing? Lol This video just made me think back when everyone is aspiring to be a beauty/fashion blogger/vlogger (including myself). I remember thinking that “oh yea… this x item will be good for a post etc.” At some point, you end up realizing that you’re starting to live for other people and not yourself. You’ve highlighted how the trending “essentials” videos, while it might be well intent and a really helpful guide for other people, it could end up being an aspiration purchase. Sometimes, at least for me, my senses goes out the door when I see something pretty and shiny even though the thing might not work with my current lifestyle. But yea, I remember back in my 20s when I bought all these heels (cuz they’re an investment to my wardrobe I’m trying to build 🥲 lol) and thought… I’ll be using this til I’m in my 30s working my corporate job. Welp, I can say that that was a lie cuz I use the same pairs of chucks when I leave the house (when I do leave the house). Thanks for sharing! I find your videos really relatable since your earlier content was fashion based and have transitioned to a more mindful spending and simplified life. Even though I don’t comment as often, I make sure to smash that like button for the algorithm.

I've made plenty of mistakes when it comes to buying clothing, but when I place a budget on myself and stick to a list of things I need, that allows me to have more money saved in the bank for my future. I remember when I first got into the capsule wardrobe system myself, and since then, I've transitioned out of that mold of having those "absolute essentials" like the white t-shirt or white button up shirt. I honestly just don't enjoy white as much as I used to, and so black is the only basic color I have in my wardrobe as it complements the rest of my very colorful palette.
