Definitely yes. I think they go extreme with tech and as long as they are doing is cause they want to and not denying them what they want life then it is cool. Nothing wrong if you can afford it buying a phone or new watch you want if you can afford it. Buying it outright, not financing.

@@doomy_doomy2225 I finance. I don’t knock it, as long as you mange your payments. Even if you don’t, though I don’t recommend it, it’s your choice. Nearly 3 years ago my heart went into AFIB. I am a healthy and fit person with no history of heart issues in any way. It was a freak occurrence. My only symptom was a little bit of fatigue - easily ignorable. The *ONLY* was I was made aware was my Apple Watch. It literally saved me from having a stroke or worse. We cleared it with a cardioversion and has been normal since (turns out it was related to a medication I was taking at the time).That alone has assured I’ll always wear it (or something similar). Add that to fitness tracking, tap pay, controlling all of my HomeKit stuff, unlocking my Mac, navigation assistance, text messaging + making/answering calls, media controls and glanceable time/date/calendar items/pulse/weather on my complication - why in the world would I stop wearing it?

My apple watch alerted me my oxygen was dangerously low. Went to the hospital. Got diagnosed with covid. Physicians think I didn't go to the ED that day, I probably wouldn't have survived. Needed inhalers and oxygen to make it through that COVID diagnosis. I also suffer from seizures, so I need a tech strapped to me at all times to call for help.

I feel you. I have been the biggest apple watch fan. I rated apple watch as my most used apple product and my favorite apple product in the past. But I have stopped wearing it for months. It truly feels liberating! It really does. When i had a device on my wrist 24/7, I was always stressing in the back of the my mind that I could get a notification anytime that i need to respond right away but when you don't have that anymore, and just check once a while, that stress is gone and really feel liberated.

A couple of thoughts on this: 1) From a health prospective: The Apple Watch has saved lives, there have been numerous people in the world that can attest that the Apple Watch alerts them when it detects something is going on with the heart beat. There are people there who have lost weight and generally have been living a better life thanks to the health minded aspect of the Apple Watch. 2) From a senior prospective: This actually hits home for me (I'm not a senior) but with a parent who is 70+ there have been times where she's fallen and the Apple Watch has alerted me when it has happened. The ability to use the watch when the phone is not near them is a godsend to the elderly community. 3) From a tech prospective: As someone who uses their Mac on a stand with a keyboard and mouse (with external display) the TouchID button is not near me, I use my Apple Watch so I can authenticate into the Mac, Make Apple Pay transitions and use it to confirm Password manager requests. It's great that you're downsizing but there are great uses for the Apple Watch.

I understand and agree with your perspective. But Drew is speaking on his personal day-to-day. I was super interested in the watch ultra last year when it was announced.I have a series 4. But i had to take a step back and think for a second. I havnt used or worn my watch a a very long time. And when i was using it i really wasnt taking full advantage of all the features it offers. So i decided to hold off on buying a new one. The point he is making its not all for everyone and no one needs to feel like they are left out for not having the latest and greatest or completely immersed into a tech ecosystem (Apple or Android) for it to be useful.

I'm a late bloomer. I haven't worn any watch for 20 odd years so the Ultra was my first new watch since and my first smart watch. I've wore it 24x7 unless charging since release. I sleep with the Ultra on and its been super comfortable. Wasn't interested in an Apple watch till the Ultra due to crappy battery life on the lesser models. Would honestly be happy with a larger Ultra that grows wider to become more of a bracelet. Most of the time I don't even realize the watch is on my wrist.

What do you use it for? That’s the thing that I’m really interested in especially when I see people who promoted the Apple Watch for so long like drew also come to the same conclusion as me: that it doesn’t really do anything. I want to ask people not to try to see something that I’m missing, because I think that these things are so cool that I’m always tempted to buy one. BUT… I refuse to get something that doesn’t do anything. I want one, but it’s gotta actually do something, you know?

This is definitely a very interesting take on things. One of the reasons I really don’t want to ditch my Apple Watch is definitely the notification management. I’ve always found it easier and nicer for me to glance down at my Watch when I’m with people or doing something to decide whether or not I need or want to respond to said notification. I’m also work as a manager so this really does help me go about my day as when I don’t have it, the day feels long and i’m on my phone more
@sparky6757
@sparky6757 Год назад
To me, yes, a smartwatch is another *piece* of tech, but I still think it aids in minimalism. It helps minimize the distraction my phone presents when it’s not free time. It’s simply more convenient to check my watch to see if a notification is important, or check off an item on my to-do list. And because it’s more convenient, that means I’d rather do it on my watch than on my phone. So that means my phone stays in my pocket. If my phone’s in my pocket I cannot get distracted by the things I shouldn’t be doing at that point in time. Can my watch do a whole lot more than I use it for? Sure, I guess. I could record workout data on it like you mentioned, or sleep tracking, or some other things I’m not recalling offhand. But I don’t do that. I use my watch for - to-do list - Siri - check notifications - check the time - set timers And it saves me a little time compared to checking those on my phone, but more importantly, keeps my phone in my pocket when I don’t have time to be doing stuff I don’t need to do. EDIT: forgot to mention, more often than not, I can’t feel my phone vibrate in my pocket. Just feels the same as my pants rubbing against my leg when I’m walking. So when my watch vibrates I actually know I’m getting a call or a message, something that my phone *isn’t* reliable for.

Drew if you wanna be less attached to your phone then I challenge you to temporarily switch to using the Apple Watch ONLY. No iPhone. I’ve been living without a phone since January. I use the Apple Watch set up by itself not paired to any phone. It absolutely amazing, I can call, text, use maps, music, Apple Pay, podcasts, and even browse the internet in a pinch, And I can do all that without getting sucked into doom scrolling or wasting my time. What I love about the watch too is I actually forget it’s there all the time. Even though it’s strapped to my wrist it’s way less intrusive than a slab of glass in my pocket. Also the Apple Watch doesn’t allow ads so all the things I use the watch for in quick bursts, I never have to see an advertisement. Living with no phone is the future than few will ever try because a phone seems “too pivotal” to their ecosystem.

As someone who used to be addicted to getting the latest tech (and I'm still digging myself out of that hole) I now have an iPhone 11 (base model - 64gb) since launch and a Series 5 Apple Watch (since launch) and I'm happy. It is going to be hard for me for a few months cause my husband's 11 is overheating too much so he is going to upgrade but mine is fine so I'm keeping it until my debt is paid off. My goal is within the next 3 years. So I hope my phone lasts that long (it should being an iPhone). Same with my Apple Watch. Only thing I upgraded recently is my iPad Pro and that is because I use it daily to watch videos and manage my websites. The 10.5" screen I had just wasn't enough and it wasn't going to get iOS 18 so I got the 12.9" Pro. I kind of regret it though because I'd rather have a Macbook. I don't need the pencil for much of anything (that I couldn't use a pen and paper for) and most apps I use run better on it. So after my debt is paid off, I will probably sell this thing and get a macbook as one of my first big purchases that I save up for.

I've had an Apple Watch twice so far. One of them was an SE 1st gen when I was a store manager, where I found an ease to know I'm being contacted or make a quick call/text. Then after I quit that job, I gave it to my wife for almost two years until she wanted to upgrade to the Series 8 for the newer features beneficial to women, and I got the SE back for tracking workouts and just wearing a watch. And then I sold it lol. I just don't get the appeal of it unless you work in sales or some other job where you desperately need to be on the lookout for customers and your phone becomes a disturbance.

I know this was posted 4 months ago but yesterday I made the plunge to and upgraded my SE with the Series 9. Did I need the upgrade, probably not. The only issue with the SE was its battery is getting tired and on occasion not lasting the day. I got into the Apple Watch only 3 years ago with the SE and its been great, the biggest benefit has been (like all watches) the ability to check the time without getting my iPhone out. But its nice to quickly check the weather and other things like an incoming message.or notification.

I still use my Apple Watch SE every day. I actually don't even connect it to my phone though (I have Bluetooth off on both devices). It is just for activity tracking & Apple Pay. It isn't 100% necessary, but I can't see myself getting rid of it anytime soon. That being said, I also don't plan on upgrading soon either. I only upgraded from my Apple Watch Series 3 earlier in the year because the battery life got to the point where it wouldn't last a full day and I expect to upgrade this in a few years, probably to another used one for the same reason, since I am not someone who likes upgrading anything for the sake of it.

I understand your concern, but I had a health scare a few years back, and realized that a watch would’ve really helped the doctors (and my wallet) if I just had long term records constantly being recorded. Since then, I’ve been much more involved with the Health app, from daily ECGs, sleep recordings, to other stuff, like food intake, blood pressure, and weight, and the Apple Watch really helps with a lot of that. If I have another problem, I’ll have months or years of records to give my health care professionals. Everything else the watch does is just icing.
@michaelcorcoran8768
@michaelcorcoran8768 Год назад
I find it hard to believe that doctors care about your Apple watch data. Doctors have to triage the amount of information they use anyways and your current vital signs have been plenty for many many decades. Maybe a nutritionist or something could get some value but doctors in the middle of a medical emergency? They are not going to consult your health data on your Apple watch. It's not reliable enough anyways and has never been tested to be relied on in medical situations. It would be a huge reliability issue if they relied on it

@abubakrakram6208 Год назад
Obviously, you know your situation, better and what your “health scare” was, but from the outside that sounds like hypochondria my dude. Is the data that you pump in this thing actually detailed enough to help doctors or is it just a quantity over quality thing that you’ve gotten used to doing?

I just bought an old fashioned digital watch to replace my Apple Watch. Part of the reason is what you described, but I also appreciate the simplicity of a device that doesn't try to do so many things. Seconds are always displayed. It's easy to get to the stop watch and keep it on. I don't accidentally lose my place bumping the screen. And I'm getting a separate dedicated heart rate monitor watch with chest strap for exercising.

Ok. My stand on this is that the Apple Watch is helpful and convenient and I would not give it up at the moment. The biggest thing I actually use the Watch for all the time is Apple Pay in stores and other places. While I could do that with my phone it’s much easier to pay with the Watch (in stores). I don’t even have to pull my phone out. I love that. I really only use Apple Pay on my iPhone for payments in apps, on web sites, or to reload my Starbucks card. In retail places I always use my watch to pay! I also like it just to quickly check the time, of course, it is after all, a watch, lol. And to see notifications and messages on-the-go or when I don’t want to pull out my phone. Lastly, to track workouts when I do them. Which unfortunately isn’t very much these days. But hopefully I can motivate myself again to change that. lol 😂 So, while I don’t actively use the Watch as much as the phone, I still love it and feel it serves a purpose.

I’m just 1 minute in and I also stopped wearing my Apple Watch about 2 weeks ago. I first left it because I didn’t charge it by accident and then I noticed my watch tan fading and just decided to let it even out. After that the watch band didn’t match my wardrobe one day and I was like “eh I’ll swap out the band later on”. But that never happened. I’ll get back to it and track my steps and such in an upcoming vacation but it’s kinda nice. I wore a traditional analog watch today.

I agree with you Drew 100%. I don't really need an Apple Watch myself and it took me years to realize this. All I ever use the watch for are making payments and checking notifications. These are things which my iPhone could do easily. I don't use the sleep tracking, the health data, the handwashing feature and most certainly do not use it to stream music/podcasts. I bought the 44mm Series 7 LTE and barely used it for anything meaningful. It was a colossal waste of money on my part. I will be selling it and saving the money for more meaningful things. As a tech enthusiast, it is always fun to be on the bleeding edge of things but not at the cost of your livelihood and sanity.

For me my watch is primarily my notification center. I dont work at a desk job and im constantly moving. While yes it only takes a moment, but having my phone buzz in my pocket and not knowing what it is then pulling it out to see its just an ad or a spam call, is a waste of time. So having a watch to see what is happening all while never stopping is great. There are also a bunch of small functions like time date calculator that aid my work. So its just a quicker way of navigating my phone without pulling out my phone. But as for my phone itself, i dont feel a strong attachment to it. Just the basic apps like spotify or calculator calendar email and texts . Those i could do w/o a high end phone.

Beautifully made video, excellent commentary. It's all very true, you're very conscious of a reality made so strong from apple that everyone simply gets trapped in it mentally speaking. It's very important to become this conscious so we can develop control over our consumerism of technology, to use them NOT AS A CONSUMMERIST, but as a PERSON WITH NEEDS and these are TOOLS, well, at least should be mainly. IF they are not used as tools, then the tools become us. This is so important to acknowledge.

I agree in some aspects. For me the Apple Watch is an escape from my phone so I can be with the family… it allows me to see calls and determine if I need to get the phone or ignore it without getting the phone. I do think it’s peaked, aside from certain health sensors that matter to me, or a trade-in offer so big it is worth it. (Last year Verizon gave $1000 for the 13 pro max) it is getting hard to pry a device from me and my money out of my pocket. There has to be something of value and at this point all of the devices are very good… the upgrades are minimal and the product has matured… I have started to get less and less excited each year.

I haven’t had my watch for very long, and I’m finding it useful to track/prod my fitness. But I certainly empathize with much that Drew has said here. I avoid adding notifications for most if not all apps and even the ones that do have notifications enabled are silent because notification sounds annoy me. As a result I do not get blaster with notifications so my Apple Watch is not a distraction. Eliminating notifications sounds and minimizing notifications can help eliminate distractions making the Apple Watch an excellent watch.

Good video. Its interesting that you made this video because I know a few people that don't live on the internet and don't have a phone and I have seen what felt like people were shaming them for not having a phone because "don't you want to listen to music while you are out?" , "what if you need a map to find where you are going" , "what if you want to call a friend or family while you are out". Seeing that has also made me realize how many people are addicted to their phone and assume people can't live without one and don't think that you COULD do that stuff on a laptop or a tablet and don't need to own a phone.
