Photography isn't easy and sometimes, even though the conditions are perfect, getting the shot you want is difficult. In this week's vlog I am in the Lake District photographing the beautiful heather.

Always a true pleasure to watch your videos Nigel. Not only are you sharing your skills with all of us - you do it in such a calm and relaxed way. Great location, great filming and such nice music for my morning coffee on the terrace. Take care Nigel and see you out there..

sometimes is is an absolutely great day when just walking and admiring such a fantastic nature and leaving the gear in the backpack. We don't always have to try to shoot when just observing and admiring is so great. We all should be jealous of Nigel for living so close to paradise :)

Not finding a composition is what I can totally relate to. How many times did I stand in front of beautiful waterfalls, but could not find a good way to photograph it. No foreground interest, no lines, no ideas. I then always think that if a good photographer like you would come along, you'd find a jaw dropping composition in no time ... :-)

Hi Nigel, A day late seeing your Sunday video, so I just finished seeing it here in Florida at 4 a.m. on Monday. Just a quick thank you for your making and sharing of your photo excursions for us to watch and the chat at the end with your thoughts about what goes on within your head as you set out to make some photos. These weekly videos are mainly for inspirational purposes for me and they never disappoint. Another great 18 minutes with you that I've spent via RU-vid. Enjoy your week and stay healthy as is my goal week after week during this pandemic. Cheers, Rod from across the pond.

Your video's are so good and i love your honesty regarding not being able to see where the best shot sits within all the beauty ,Brobably because one is first human and then a photographer ,meaning one loves to take in all the beauty and trying to find what is best to take home can be so difficult ,Is really doing two things at once. But i love the final results .Cheers from Ireland .

Thanks Nigel. A good way to end my day watching one of your videos. I think sometimes its just being able to enjoy the peace and quiet of where you are that is important. Having a coffee, an apple to eat and chilling can be refreshing. It's true photography is sometimes lonely work. I've taken to taking more close ups lately on my 70-200 as I ran out of ideas with the wide angle. Rock formations and texture make great subjects coupled with some colour. Its Spring here in NZ so there is colour coming up to enjoy. Glad you found the tree. Looking forward to your next video.

Thanks Nigel. Another epic morning! My favorite lens on APS-C was my 10-20mm, and recently moved up to the Z6, so the 14-30 is now on my list. Ultra Wide Angle is my goto for many shots, but as you said, you have to manage the foreground. Plus everything on the edges. Look forward to next week.

Wow. What a timely video. Just this past weekend I was photographing in the coastal region of South Carolina. Lots of photogenic subjects. When I got them onto my computer and began reviewing them in Photoshop, I find that for varying reasons, I discarded more than half of the shots I made. There were some keepers that I found suitable for print and display, but it is discouraging when I reject so many. It is refreshing to see that I am not alone. Thanks!

Sometimes we've got a particular image in our mind and we're not flexible enough to change the plan if things don't look great. Also the light changes quickly at sunrise and adds pressure to the shooting. Happy to see you're able to chill out and get away with few great images. I find myself more comfortable with a long lens when in the mountains, trying to capture details and the light interacting with the subjects and the hills. For me, taking a 14-30, 10-24 or a 16-35mm up there will be a suicide, but it's just my opinion! About hiking at night (and summiting before sunrise): I truly believe it's one of the best feelings ever. Hardly no one, fantastic atmosphere and such a rewarding experience. 👍🏻 Another great video and looking forward to seeing next week one!

Again, an excellent instructional video. Your discussion of perhaps over-emphasizing the foreground rock elements by shooting up close at 14mm as compared to a more balanced 24 mm shot was particularly instructive. For me, the 24mm shot had a smoother gradient from front to back and thus avoiding the possible distorted, "in-your-face" feeling engendered in the 14mm rendition. I believe some would much prefer the former, I not so much. Different strokes....

Thumbs up on this one, and this is probably going to come off bad, but had to simply for the moo'ing cows and you laughing at it. I do enjoy your videos very much though even when there aren't any cows. And it is somewhat refreshing in a way to hear about being in an awesome spot but still struggling to get what you want. I feel like there isn't a lot of attention paid to what it takes to get that special thing and the struggle to figure it out and come out with a work that is satisfactory from that creative endeavor. Thank you for sharing.

Wonderful Photos...I am amazed by your work!...and, I noticed the hat was new....One thing that i appreciated about this video (and your videos in general) was the honesty about your work. There are photographers that make it look as though every time they go out, they hit a home run, and they are able to find the Picture without fail. I enjoy seeing that you, even as top pro, sometimes struggle to find the composition. That teaches me patience....and keeps me from giving up at times, knowing that not always nailing a perfect shot is not "just me". I LOVE wide angle. i recently picked up a 10-18mm (Canon Ef-S 4.5), and I am having such fun with it. I am using it on a Canon M50, so my 10mm becomes about 16mm, but I just love the creative options it affords. Thank you for your continued work, you are an inspiration....and...GO GIANTS!!

I struggle with finding compositions as well on prairies in Midwest Iowa - everything is soooo flat.
