i never realized how much of a compliment it can be to praise someone speaking your language. many try to deny it humbly, but they still get happy when they hear it

@@doenermitallem Some french speak english, or I wouldn't be able to answer to you (French, English, Japanese and a little of spanish). But yeah, now french kids don't really care about english (one of the reason is video games are now translated in french, same for japanese animation series. In the 80-90's, most video games were in english so we had no choice but to learn it and be interested about it). We can say that french who speak english are a part of the 80-90's kids. But it's the same in other countries anyway. Most Japanese people only speak japanese. Most "natives" americans only speak english, etc... Two days ago, I met someone searching for a specific location in France, he was only speaking it's language, english.

Usually you can tell an uneducated (equals in this case a monolingual) native English speaker quite easily from an educated one (who knows first hand how difficult it can be to communicate in foreign languages) by the way in which he takes into account (or does not) that not all his audience may be perfect in English, by speaking slowly, clearly and without sophisticated vocabulary or slang expressions.

Interesting tidbit, the word shanghai is defined in American and British dictionaries as kidnapping sailors by drugging or knocking them out and force them to work on sailing ship. Shanghai got this definition because Shanghai China was often the destination for those ships in the mid 1800's

@marco-sr4nm 25 yo looking 18 and 19 looking like a 13 yo is big difference. I am not saying she is 13 but she probably is not over 18. Also most common answer when kids lie about their age is 19. Sure, there is some slim chance for that to be the truth, but not very likely. For example Chinese girl in video also looks young but plausible that she is collage student but Indonesian girl manerism, looks, constitution and giving common 19 yo answer, etc. Just makes it unlikely. But sure there is always a chance.
