I see the comments about dual screen still being possible with the laptop screen and a display. Sure if that's how you want to work, you could still get dual displays out of it. But that doesn't change the fact that previous computers on older/weaker hardware were able to do this and it's being intentionally limited now.

That is terrible of Apple to gimp the M3 MacBook Pro 14" base model that way. Are you going to sell your base M3 MacBook Pro 14" now?
@techinrl9869

I don’t see how it’s limited any more than a Mac mini is. Keep in mind the Mac mini is headless, so any monitor counts as one. The mini can support two displays (both external) while the M3 MacBook Pro also supports two displays (built-in plus one external). If Apple had built in the ability to show two external displays, that would be three displays, which the mini cannot do. You can argue two displays isn’t enough, but that’s a different discussion. It’s no different than the M2 MacBook Air, which can support only two displays (built-in plus one external). Having an HDMI port doesn’t mean the chip can support an extra display just as two Thunderbolt ports can still only support one external on the Air. BTW, the difference between Thunderbolt 3 and 4 is relatively minor, but one requirement Intel has for labeling something as Thunderbolt 4 is the ability to support two external displays. Since the port is otherwise the same, they can only call it Thunderbolt 3 for the sole reason it doesn’t support two external displays. Since USB4 has no such requirement, they can call it USB4 even though it’s pretty much the same as TB4. A TB4 port is also considered USB4. Yeah, it’s confusing.

@johnborges5938
@johnborges5938 6 месяцев назад
That's simply not correct. The 14" laptop also supports 2 displays -- it's just that one of them is the built-in display. The Mac Mini M1 could support 2 external displays because it has no on-board display. The limitation is in all of the M-series base processors. There's nothing malicious about it, it's just part of how they chose to keep the base M processors simpler for higher yields.

Great video. This replaced the 13 MacBook Pro with the touch bar. Apple genuinely believes SOMEBODY out here wants a MacBook more powerful than an Air but doesn’t need the “Pro” chip. I believe that’s true but Apple really priced this terribly. If they had priced this $100-150 less, they would have found their audience.

A lot of people do not understand this product and sadly make misinformed judgements. This is a fancy ultrabook, it is not for pros. That is point one, so a pro like TheEverydayDad should not buy this. Secondly, no one pays the full price. I have seen this for £200 off even at launch and is £130 off on Amazon at the moment. They have this model so they can discount it during the usual periods. Its for those that do not need a pro chip (M3 Pro/M3 Max) but want the luxury extras.

I've been debating on getting the 2nd tier M3 iMac + 16GB Unified Memory and waiting to upgrade my Macbook Pro until I can shell out on the M3 Pro Macbook Pro. Seems like this just confirms more of the same. My current Macbook Pro is the 2019 Intel that I bought refurbished and intentionally chose because there was no option to have 2 external displays on the M1 Macbook Pro at the time. It sucks now that we know they can do better, but choose not to. Thanks for all of your videos. You've been helping me weigh my options on an affordable homebase machine for content creation.

People need clarification. This is not the base 14-inch, as it only has an M3 chip, not the M3 Pro. The base M3 Pro is £400 more. This is the replacement for the MB Pro 13 M2, which was and always has been an ultrabook; ergo a MB Air with a fan and a few extras. It has never been targeted at prosumers like the M3Pro/Max chipped MB Pro 14/16!!!

Totaly with you on Apple limiting it to one display on M3. But just to be fair - it has always been like that since M1. Mac mini with Thunderbolt + HDMI supports 2 screens in total. So does any Macbook: internal screen + 1 external screen = 2 screens. But yeah, in 2023 it's the same silly limitation as the 8GB of unified memory in the base model and USB 2.0 in the base iPhone 15.

Just like every other consumer personal computer, the M3 hardware is “limited” because this base model which is meant for regular consumers, the vast majority of which don’t use external monitors period, much less a dual external monitor setup. The base M1, M2 and now M3 was purpose built to support only 2 monitors for those reasons. The laptops support 2 monitors; 1 internal, 1 external. The Mac mini supports 2 monitors 2 external. It’s really that simple. Personally, I don’t think this product should exist, especially with the pro name, but it is what it is. At least you’re informed enough to not buy it if it doesn’t meet your needs.

When I upgraded my M1 MacBook Air to the new base m3 MacBook Pro I knew it was not a PRO level machine. And I don’t use it for that. I’m a college student, I mainly use Microsoft word, RU-vid, and gmail along with some extra apps and things here and there. Did I need to upgrade? Hell no. My m1 was running like clockwork and after 2 years I could’ve kept it even longer. I upgraded because I wanted better speakers ( even tho the m1 was already exceptional), the promotion display and more brightness. If you are thinking about getting this laptop as a student and it is within your budget pls grab it. Even at the baseline if you do what I outlined above this machine is already future proof even with 8gb of ram. This is not a PRO machine, it’s basically just the best MacBook Air in my opinion. Plus with apple trade in and the student discount, my m3 came out to be just 1k which I believe is a steal for this new device. Hope this info helps anyone thinking about upgrading!

Only gets to 80ish in Valkdrakken and outside usually stays mid 60s and runs everything amazing with a few settings optimized. What's your thoughts on if I were to downgrade to a M3 Pro or even an M2 Pro refurb for wow specifically? I kind of like the idea of what I have and its modernness but could probably shave 1000 off and get either the 12/18 M3 or the M2 pro with 32GB instead. bear in mind that m1 and m2 shares the same 5nm process architecture, just that the m2 is overclocked. Basically, m2 series is just a better m1 series. For games wise you have to see whether the games you play will support hardware ray tracing in the future because it can utilise the hardware ray tracing that is only found on the m3, which makes the overall gaming experience a better one.

In general: I own a M1 Pro MacBook Pro and be pretty happy with the performance. From my employer I got a M2 Pro MacBook Pro and don‘t recognize much speed gains. I had to test it with tools to see: ok… 15% faster. So the M1 Pro would be still fast enough. This makes me say: I don‘t need a M3 (Pro) MacBook Pro. Sure, it‘s cool to have the newest and greatest stuff. When I‘m true to myself: I don‘t need it. The jump from Intel Core i7 to Apple Silicon was mind blowing. Not only because of the performance gains but because of the combination of performance and battery life. As long as you don‘t do Video Editing on a professional level I don‘t see any reason to switch to the new MacBook, in case you already own an Apple Silicon Mac. What am I doing with my Mac(s)? I do Data Architecture and Data Engineering. I build docker images on my Mac(s) and the M2 is only 15% faster than my M1 (only a couple of seconds). During this time I like to grab a cup of coffee. Large build are done in the cloud. This is really fast and in a solid process with repositories, all full automatic. So don‘t jump on the train of many RU-vidrs who‘s job is to „sell“ you new MacBook every year. Ask yourself: do I really need it?

It is not a flaw. Apple is simply making a brand lineup that reflects that the more you pay, the greater the features. Apple is a small player and they know the market and how to survive. If they offered the base model with all the fancy stuff, they would lose sales of the higher models and therefore less profits.

Might as well go with the m2 pro for video editing because of the better bandwidth. You save money and won't tell the difference. The increased brightness doens't matter because you can increase the base brightness of the m1 pro / m2 pro macbooks with an external app (forgot the name). If anything, m1 pro is still good and you can still increase the brightness with the app. You also get the extra thunderbolt port on the right on m1 pro / m2 pro.

The prices in Romania are higher, the price for the M3 16" is €3000 and the M1 is €2000. For me looks like the same. I am a web developer and I am not doing any crazy video editing or fancy stuff. I have a Mac Mini M2 Pro 16GB 512GB, ($1299 US), and I am very happy, works fine for me. I think for the job I do I need a minimum of 16GB RAM, never tried an 8GB RAM Mac. I am kind of new in the Apple world, got in May my first mac.

I know Apple's pricing is mostly about convincing people that the next best thing isn't that far away, but these seem a bit off, especially here in Germany: The M3 Macbook Pro is 1999€ (that's including 19% VAT, which equates to $1.839 without taxes) and the refurbished M2 Pro is 10€ more. Have to give up my 16" M1 Pro Macbook Pro (company provided, but for full private use incl. all admin rights) and will probably just grab an M1 Max 14" used as a replacement.

Wow, I didn’t catch that the ports for the baseline M3 MBP is listed as Thunderbolt 3/USB4 compared to Thunderbolt 4 for the others. Apple went out the way to make this the “budget” MBP. I guess the rationale of this version is for people who likes the Pro’s screen, speakers, and MagSafe, but don’t need the endurance, capabilities, and top-end performance of the “real” pros. With that said, thanks for pointing out that you can get the baseline M2 MBP for the same price that doesn’t have those type of compromises.

The base MB Pro 14 M3 is an ultrabook; forget about brand marketing. It has the same chip as will come in the MB Air M3. It is for a lower point of entry, and of course, they would not give it the same specs as the MB Pro 14 M3 Pro as that would hurt sales of that model. As you imply, it is really for people that are looking at a base MB Air but would enjoy the extras of the base Pro. And despite the reviews, the MB Pro 14 M3 (base) is very good value over the Air due to the 120Hz, miniLED, extra 256GB SSD, extra ports, higher brightness, M3>M2, etc.

Spot on. You've named me. I was about to get the M2 15" Air with 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD because that is sufficient for my needs to do usual web, office and a bit of Lightroom for my DSLR raw files. But along comes this base M3 MacBook Pro specced with 16GB RAM for only AU$200 more than the same spec M2 15"Air. It's a no brainer. M3 Pro weighs only 40g more, is more portable (it's smaller overall, I picked them both up in the apple store), get better screen, better speakers, SD card reader and M3 speed bump. For photo editing both will plug into my 4K 32" monitor just fine and all my files are on my Synology NAS anyway so 512SSD is just fine. I'm coming from using Intel MacBook Pros since 2008 but only needed Intel pro models because before Apple silicon, standard MacBooks didn't handle Lightroom smoothly. Since M1 the Air with 16G. RAM is fine

I bought a M3 14” with 24gb of RAM and a 1TB HDD. Waiting for delivery. I’m a podcast editor using Audition, and do After Effects exports for 2-3 hour animated podcast ep videos. Happy to wait for exports, as we usually only put out one episode a month. I don’t really need extreme CPU or GPU speed, but 16gb of RAM hasn’t really been really cutting it for me. Hoping 24gb will be enough. The 18gb on the M3 Pro didn’t really appeal to me. Other option was M3 Pro with 32gb of RAM and 1TB. Huge price jump.

Nothing is worse than paying top dollar and realizing you can’t use the machine the way you want to without running in to bottlenecks. Overpaying for something you don’t need sucks too though. I work at a FAANG and the 8 GB Macbooks are problematic even for light to medium office work in a media company. Our in-house software and custom apps are already inefficient. When users have 10+ Chrome tabs open, Zoom, Outlook, etc, the performance issues make 16GB a better baseline.

@@jimtipton8888 I'm convinced they are good for your use case. At our corp, we ran 1 volumetric analysis on this. The 8 gb Mac Airs (or 8gb win laptops) are 5x as likely to have resource-shortage induced technical issues, multi-tasking problems, media & conference call hiccups as the higher ram builds. The money saved on the 8GB vs 16GB builds is not worth it, even when multiplied by 15,000. Apple knows this and charges an obscene amount (anywhere from 200-400 more) for the 16 GB version. That's how you hit 3 trill in market cap.

I’m not justifying Apple but come on most people don’t need 10 chrome tabs opened at the same time, I do agree that for $1600 the base MacBook Pro should have 16gb of RAM but for regular users 8gb is fine, I was running a 2020 MacBook Pro 13 with an i5 8gb ram and 256gb storage and it was fine for me, recently upgraded to the base M3 MacBook Pro and i’m very satisfied.

@@yordan826 A lot of our users are content moderators and have 8-10 active chrome tabs, a macro app, Outlook, Zoom, and custom software just to perform mandatory job functions. Add a couple Firefox tabs if they're watching RU-vid at work. Everyone runs a local security suite to enable VPNs and stay behind our firewalls on or off site, and there goes 8+gigs ram. If you've done IT work at Fortune 100 corps, you know this is not unusual. Some use cases run lighter, but for those with SAP or large spreadsheet, figure 8 gigs ram just for that. People in our legal departments often have 20 chrome tabs running and HR reps are famous for showing up at the helpdesks downstairs with 50-100 chrome tabs open and wondering why their computer is slow or crashing. Is it a bit clearer now why 16GB should be our baseline? We have ~50,000 Macbook users and ~10,000 of them are 8GB Airs.

You are complaining about the price as a business can easily upgrade to 16GB or more. If Apple started at 16GB then the price would rise accordingly, so I really never see what point people are making. It really is just affordability, and whether £200 extra for double the RAM is value, and for you it clearly would be, so just buy it, a great £200 investment for the next 5+ years.

I really like your reviews, but i think you have missed a trick. The MacBook Pro M3 Pro base level model. While some have focused in the swapping out of performance cores for efficiency ones, Max Tech showed that the outcome has been a very slight improvement in performance over the M2 pro but with 1-2 hours of extra battery life. The thing they did not go into too much was the jump from 16 to 18GB of RAM. While the creatives may bemoan the drop in memory speed from 200 to 150GB/sec I think they are not the intended audience. I think this is for the Mac users who also need to run virtual environments (i.e. Windows for work) and so I would be really interested to know if that extra 2GB of RAM lets you assign 16GB of RAM to the virtual machine and if that actually makes any difference in practice to the most probable use of someone needing to run windows for work or school but wanting to use a mac personally.
@andyH_England
@andyH_England 6 месяцев назад
There is no reason why you could not make use of that extra 2GB of RAM on the macOS side, and I assume the VM developer would already allow this. So, it would give you more headroom.

If I had to guess I would say the one monitor limitation has less to do with the CPU and a lot more to do with a limited 8GB of unified memory, which of course the external displays also use. Now of course if you upgrade to 16GB that wouldn't be a problem, but that also complicates the product line, so Apple just nerfed the chip to only access one external monitor regardless of RAM spec. To my mind it's fixable if Apple just dropped the 8GB model from the range, but someone has to convince Tim. He loves those bonuses and short changing customers hardware and forcing them up the tiers is one of the ways he gets them.
@andyH_England
@andyH_England 6 месяцев назад
The problem with starting at 16GB and keeping the price the same is that it would kill the sales of the M3 Pros and lead to much lower margins when profits and sales have been poor for the last year due to the general economic malaise and lower demand in the sector. That would be a poor business decision, and the only way I see Apple doing it is if the monopolistic Windows segment (91% of the PC market) were to start at 16GB, which most of the premium Windows ultrabooks do not do. For people needing 16GB or more, upgrade or buy the MB Pro 14 M3 PRO.
