I Tapped from Pressure as a BJJ White Belt ( Here’s How I fixed it )

Back when I was a brand new White Belt I had a nasty habit of tapping out from pressure during a roll.
You see, what would happen was, I would roll balls to the wall crazy. Spazzy and full of energy. In a lot of cases during the roll I would control the positions and what happened.
But eventually I would putter out and my BJJ training partner would then take over and submit me.
Sometimes with a technique and sometimes with just pressure.
Recently I received a question from a BJJ White Belt who is having the same trouble during his Jiu-jitsu practices.
He says that during his Brazilian Jiu-jitsu class. Most things go just fine.
But then! He will gas out and feels forced to tap from pressure when someone gets into Mount.
And he sent me a message about any tips I could give him.
In this video I share what I did to overcome this issue with my Brazilian Jiujitsu training and how I was able to relax and breath even when someone had lots of pressure.
If you're White Belt in Jiujitsu and having the same trouble I've had, as have many others. Then I hope the video is helpful!

First off whatever training partner got “frustrated” w/ a white belt for tapping early is simply an asshole. Find a different partner and stick w/ it! :-) as usual great advice from chewmaster 🥋🔥
@katemichelle3657

cunn1n6ham that was my first thought too. Never make someone feel bad for tapping! Whoever did that to someone who has been training for a month is a complete idiot.

It depends, there has to be some accountability. You have to take being a higher rank seriously which means its your job to be an ambassador to the next level. You have accept your role and help these people grow. If they are just giving up too quick because the roll did not go perfect for them and they want to start over, in that case you need to say something. They are never going to grow and develop if they dont work these problems.

Agreed
@12XxXHandlesAreStupidXxX123
I couldnt breathe with a higher belt sitting on my chest and throat (it was like my 2nd roll), and he refused to get off to my tap because "Use your technique to get out". I get the sentiment, but I tapped because I cant breathe... Respect the tap or you lose trust from me as a partner.

It is not like we forget to breath, we will be dead, literally, lol. But we breath too little in relation to the amount of effort and force we are putting into the roll. It happens to me all the time as a 6 months new white belt.

I’ve found that if you’re feeling smashed from mount it helps to do the “home alone” by putting a palm on both sides of your head and tucking your elbows in. It’s a fairly solid frame no matter how heavy the guy is.

Late to the party here, Chewjitsu, 40 years old and just 1 month in and I've found a new love. I can't stop thinking about my rollls and the positions I was in and how I could have done different. Anyways, what I've really been enjoying is the culture of BJJ. Everyone is super supportive and kind... At least at my gym, but you make me think that this is the general culture of BJJ. I'm very glad I have 5+ years of your vids to watch and ponder over while I think back at my recent rolls and why I got my ass kicked. Cheers.

Here's how you get through it: take a deep breath, throught your mouth not your nose, because you don't want to tap from his scrotum smell, and then do a headbut to his nuts. Illegal move but the judges wont be able to see it, since afterall, his nuts are covering your face.

Not panicking from any position is super important. There are times where I'll just sit in triangles, or chokes just to work on that. It is one of the most important things to learn IMO, and if you can figure it out you can get out of a lot of stuff most people couldn't. One suggestion is to look up controlled breathing, and breath holding for surfers, it's a thing they work on a lot.

I had this problem when I was just starting out too. Guy my coach always made me roll with was about 100 pounds heavier than me and would just put all his weight on me. I use to just try to muscle my way out and get exhausted (I hated being on my back coming from wrestling) but after awhile I learned just remaining calm and remembering to trap joints and keeping them off balance really helped. Also my coach yelling at me to not stay still and remember the sweeps I learned helped too lol

Good video. I'm still only a few weeks in as a spanking new white belt, but I am also kind of claustrophobic. One of the things I've been learning to control, is the slight panicky feeling I get when I get into one of those positions. Its one of the things I'm really loving actually, is learning to control the fight or flight panic, learning to control my reactions to things, and be in better control of my reactions.

I love roller coasters, but ironically HATED the Giant Drop. All it is is the horrible free-fall butterflies you're-about-to-go-splat feeling without any twists or loops or turns or whatever, plus extra doom feeling because they forget about you at the top for a minute while your feet dangle in the abyss and your palms sweat and you'd rather just jump off than wait. So at the end of one day at Six Flags I wanted to challenge myself. I thought "let's end this BS fear of the giant drop right here and now." I paid extra, extra attention to every sensation. Deep breaths on the way up, FOCUSED on the nervous energy in my legs and stomach instead of wishing it wasn't there, APPRECIATED how sweaty my palms were instead of trying to air-dry them, and at the top, looking out for hundreds miles in every direction, my feet dangling thousands of feet off the ground, occasionally ducking to avoid low-flying planes, I acknowledged and accepted that my body was about to be driven towards the earth at supersonic speeds. And then when we fell, instead of letting the feeling "happen to me," I stared it straight in the face and said "yeah, I know you. Cool." I remember that freefall so clearly, and I was so calm. Introspective. Zen. Anyway... to echo your point, and my advice for anyone confronting any fear/discomfort in anything in life: stare your fear in the face. Be curious about it. Test it. See if you can be even more afraid. LEAN INTO your fear. See if your fear is all it's cracked up to be. Most likely it's not, and the feeling after directly confronting a fear (even during) it is like nothing else. That story is from years ago and whenever I remember it I still feel like I'm walking on clouds.

Great answer chewy. May I add that creating a bridge pushing off with one foot and moving to the side of your hip keeping one leg stretched out perpendicular to the bridging foot. Best example and credit to is; Jean Jacques Machado. If you stay one your side much easier to breathe. Stay calm, elbows in, start conditioning more like run. And the bridging technique will work wonders thanks chewy and good luck guys.

Hey, I come from a Singing/music background and people would just pass out on the stage from improper breathing, even before they sang lol. The breath is the foundation of life. Distributing correct flow of oxygen immediately impacts mental alertness and sharpness, as well as crisp muscle movements. Overlooked, but simple standalone training of proper relaxed breath support technique is effective. A little slower through flared nostrils, It only takes a fraction of a second to get a quiet, efficient full diaphragm inhale.

Just happened to me today and I tapped 5 times due to top pressure. I think it happens when you take a long break from training because I took a long break off. Before I could remain in this position for a long time and still breathe. Today as soon as someone went to mount on me, I could not breathe at all. I’m not sure if it’s because I had a big lunch or too much water, I just couldn’t breathe. People were saying the same thing to not tap and to remain calm, but I was going to suffocate because my airway was blocked, I could not breathe. I think it’s just that we’re starting back up again because I didn’t have this issue back when I was training full-time.

Maaaan, nobody had told me I should focus more on my breathing. I’ll pay more attention next time I’m rolling do consciously force myself to breath. I do the same shit when climbing and I forget to breath through hard moves unless I consciously remind myself. Thanks a lot.

Question: if you were claustrophobic as a kid, did you have trouble in wrestling 🤼‍♂️ with that?

I relate so much to this question. I’m only like 140 lbs, tall and skinny. So anytime I roll I feel exhausted after a minute or 2 because I’m having to do everything at 100% to defend against these guys that are like 30 lbs heavier than me. Shit is brutal

chewy how do you feel about people that train at “highend” gyms and have that “superstar” attitude even towards others who train there.. off the mat we all should be equal dont you think?

Does the tips on the video apply to submissions that are not fully correct, for example rear naked choke on the chin sometimes your partner is so strong you need to tap. Is it ok to endure the pain? Because I don't like to tap to the point of making my partners dislike rolling with me

i have a question : How to relieve pressure from knee on belly with someone putting all his might and strength and weight on ur belly by of course controling ur lapel and arm as well? I find it difficult to properly breath then, cant get all the air i want.

Would this work? I used to tap early to avoid injury, but then offer the higher belt the position back to work on their game and I could work on defense.

If you as a smaller fighter, can keep fighting late into the fight, most of the time, will have more stamina left than the bigger heavier fighter. Even big strong muscular guys burn out faster, not always, than a smaller fighter. When training in combatives I was paired up with a guy that had nearly 100lbs on me, I was 180lbs, he was 270lbs, for my last fight to get my level one certification. He dominated me on the ground, I'd escape, either by shrimping out or going through the backdoor, so to speak. Hed suck me back in and keep trying to submit me. After the 5th time of escaping, I finally got out for good. We were both gased, but I had better cardio and stamina than him. Anyway out the backdoor i went, rolled over, applied my seatbelt, as my instructor called it and applied the RNC. I sank my hooks in, pulled back with everything I had left, straightened him out, inhaled and that's all it took. He tapped. That dude was so mad at me, he wouldnt talk to me for 3 weeks after that. Sometimes stamina and cardio are better than size.

Hi chewie, I'm completely new to BJJ and I've done some research on judo and wrestling complementing BJJ. Now here in the UK especially where I live we don't have Gyms that really specialise in doing wrestling. So my question is would the occasional Judo session a week help my game with takedowns and balance? I do want to compete once i have the fundamentals.

Ive gotten fat from traveling so people's weight are on my belly and it makes it hard for me.to breath.so i roll slightly to one side ao pressure is on my hip vs.belly. or i push them down far enough so their.weight is on my.hip

I smashed every white belt in my 4th lesson! Even bigger guys but I was just using strength to get my submission or control the round! Then my instructor which is a 4th dagree blue belt told me to roll with him he was a little angry I can tell he put pressure in places where I couldn’t breath then he tried to chock me with the gear but I just tapped out! He made me use all my energy in the first round and still a female blue belt 4th degree couldn’t submitte me after! Other people were to easy but I didn’t wanna be an ass again just make everyone feel good about themselves! The blue belt is heavier then me I’m 67 his 75

I'm a new white belt. I haven't tapped to top pressure (yet), but I have tapped to someone squeezing my ribs hard in closed guard by straightening their legs and pinching their knees together. I panicked because of the pain and inability to breathe, but should I have tapped? Was I really in any immediate danger of a rib snapping or something like that, or did I actually have at least a minute to figure out how to break the closed guard before I'd pass out from a lack of oxygen?
