@@joseescobedo7899 What is unfortunate is that with newer cars the " emergency brake " is activated by pressing a button on the console. I have 2 cars: an 06 Mustang and a 2013 Fusion. The Mustang has a " regular " pull-up parking brake while the newer Fusion has a small button next to the driver's seat. The first time I used it I noticed a sound coming from the back of the car, it was a motor (I guess) pulling on the parking brake. It makes the same sound when you release/push off the parking brake. I would imagine many people ignore that button if they aren't making it a habit of pressing it on...and being a button you can't easily see if it is on, tho there is a red light on the instrument panel of both my cars that lights when the parking brake is in use.

I get it. We have to lay blame someplace. But I am a FIRM user of my parking brake! Like, even on LEVEL driving surfaces. I guess being an "old school" gearhead has me not wanting the car to "rest" on the transmission. I get accidents happen. I don't believe car manufacturers do these things intentionally. Drivers do bear some level of responsibility to ensure they are not distracted. Are we now going to start suing car manufacturers for these people driving w/o headlights b/c they think they are on due to the always-on backlit IPs?! Sadly every one of the roll away accidents could have been prevented using something already in every single car, the emergency brake, which is easy to set and release. That said, I agree that with all of the tech already in cars adding a computer controlled safety feature to prevent this should not be that hard or costly. Anton Yelchin who played Chekov in the recent Star Trek movies was sadly killed like this when his 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee rolled backwards and pinned him against a pillar outside his home. The Jeep had an electronic gear selector switch that was designed to return to the neutral position after being put into park. The vehicle could be put into park, but the selector would give no confirmation that it was actually in park. Jeep sent out supplemental instructions on how to use the shifter, and ultimately recalled the cars with that shifter, replacing it with a more conventional design.
