I had all kinds of gut problems including SIBO and severe, disabling IBD, and doctor's diets and drugs never helped. I did a deep dive into evidence based research and decided to start with a 5 day water fast to give my digestive system a rest, but it also helps kill off SIBO while avoiding antibiotics, which always seem to create even more issues for me. The water fast really helped, and I slowly added some steamed veggies, soup, fruit, very simple food. I know you knock vegans a lot but a whole food fiber rich diet devoid of animal products and processed crap (especially oil) has worked miracles!

I luckily never had bloating when I was younger so when I started having it from almost every food, I knew something was wrong. It turned out to be my anxiety causing me to produce extra acid in my stomach. Took so long to figure that out though.

I have bloating and painful or smelly gas my whole life and have done the low fod. Lactose free gluten free etc. and it’s never gotten better. Done digestive enzymes. I take a good probiotic and eat a great diet. So I should look into SIBO. sounds like something that could be wrong with me

As a dietitian myself it is so helpful to see your journey and empathise with you after watching your awesome videos for years. I hope this doesn’t come across in the wrong way but it was really comforting to see you not know what was going on at certain stages of the journey (as horribly fustrating and hard as that would’ve been) - I’ve always been in awe of your expertise and feel so incompetent in this field sometimes not knowing everything as there’s so much new research constantly being published (which is great). Thank you for everything you contribute to the field and the trumping the misinformation out there. Thank you for sharing your journey and being so real in such a difficult time!

Health issues can really affect our eating. Having Crohn's I know that, at times, because so much focus is on food, my eating disorder can get triggered. There is such a balance, for me, between health and sickness both with food and my eating disorder. Best of luck on your journey with this.

I relate here… I have had IBS my whole life and the older I get the more sensitive it seems to be and it’s an ongoing almost joke now like my boyfriend and step kids will see me about to eat and ask me if I made sure it’s gluten free or if it’s safe for my tummy. I even have a nickname for my IBS (cruella) and if I’m having an issue I will tell them cruella is mad and they immediately know what that means. Ugh it’s so time consuming and life consuming

@@jessicaraewood5016 :( It is time-consuming. Esp frustrating cuz who wants to be consumed by this. Funny thing, well not funny, but you know what I mean. When I've been in hospital for surgeries etc and the dietitian comes and talks to me to figure out my diet. I am always stumped as to what to say. So much of my food has become automatic so hard to break it down. I've had Crohn's for 30 yrs so you just slowly adjust through time. However, when I have a flare-up then you gotta deal with it. It's inevitable that I will get a food tray and I realize that there is food on the try I can't eat. Not the kitchen's fault, but my fault. haha

A note to those suffering from extreme bloating. My husband had this all his adult life. We managed it with aloe Vera and avoiding beans etc. But it would flare up badly during stressful times. Many doctors just said it was IBS and the high fibre they suggested made it worse. One day it got so bad I got an emergency appointment for him and the doctor sent him straight to the ER. Turns out he had a malformed bowel from birth and it had got twisted in on itself. An emergency surgery later he had a flat stomach for the first time ever and he has been just fine for decades. Twisted bowel can be fatal. So it’s not always gut bacteria. Get your self a proper full investigation. If the doctors had referred him just once for a full bowel scan he would have avoided years of discomfort.

Love videos where you share your personal journey more than anything else, and my favorite part of this whole video was the part at the very end where you acknowledge that change is hard and may take time... As someone battling recurring/worsening SIBO that has literally handicapped my life [can't train with the team or attend family events], I have really been trying to get at the core of the issue vs. just throwing more antibiotics at it, and one of the things my dietitian wants me to focus on is that meal spacing for the MMC. I too have found this very difficult for similar reasons to you, and I get really down on myself for struggling to change my eating habits, and it was actually more encouraging to hear from someone who knows all the things but still finds it challenging to DO it, than it is for me to hear success stories from those who seem to so easily overhaul their diet when given a new meal plan.

Love that you’re sharing this journey - because that’s exactly what gut issues like SIBO are - a journey! Through self-education, working with experts, and trying LOTS of different things - from lifestyle to dietary to behavior modifications - I’ve been on the same journey for going on 5+ years. Part of my journey was also identifying that some of my abdominal pain was actually an undiagnosed hernia that I needed to have repaired (often overlooked in women because of our anatomy). So…TL;DR - this is refreshing to see you working through it one step at a time, sharing the ups and downs, and the reality that it’s often about baby steps, progress, not perfection, and small wins along the way. I cried at family dinner because I was on my second day of non solid food (and half of the food I was allowed to eat didn't fit with my food restrictions: soy and gluten). Everyone was having fresh fish and roast veggies and it smelt so good, my stomach was all pins and needles and cramping. Everyone thought I was over reacting when I left the table and cried. OMG, I feel for you! I had colonoscopy a couple of months ago but my prep lasted only a day. I was not allowed any foods that day and had to drink 4 liters of water in 4 hours (paired with a powerful laxative given by my doctor). I was scared my kidneys were going to shut down. The laxative did not taste good, as you can imagine, and the constant hunger made me sick. On the next morning, my legs were weak and my whole body was trembling. Later on that day, I found out that my blood sugar levels had dropped too low. It was quite a nightmare. By the end of it, I was hoping and praying that the doctors would come up with a diagnosis of some kind just so I could finally get adequate treatment and put an end to this torture. Unfortunately, the diagnosis was not what I had expected and the doctor said there is no specific treatment that I can benefit from. All in all, I was advised to avoid foods that trigger these symptoms. The problem is, every food seems to be an issue now. And no one can tell me what to do. I've never been this desperate in my life!

So sorry you have SIBO but so happy to have found your informational journey. I have been struggling with IBS that suddenly came on this year. I've had some symptoms over the years but nothing like this. I'm in my late 60's. I'm afraid to eat, worry if I have to leave the house. My doctor mentioned IBS and I've been keeping track of foods that seem to cause the problem, naturally all the things I love to eat like vegetables, fruit, even some breads and dairy items. Fiber seems to be my enemy. Watching your video has convinced me to talk to a gastroenterologist and see if I can cure this instead of enduring it. Thank you for posting this.

Thank you for this video! I was diagnosed with SIBO almost a year ago, and I've only known of one other person with it. Our symptoms sounded a bit different, I didn't realize that could be because of the kind of bacteria. That's so interesting. I was waking up at night with intense pain in my stomach and just felt fatigued and nauseous a lot of the time. I had to go through two rounds of antibiotics and I've been able to maintain with getting the right amount of fiber rich foods and a fiber supplement. It's definitely not a straight forward journey and I will probably have to have antibiotics again someday. It's such a relief to have an answer.

I feel like any antibiotic is going to make you sensitive to certain foods like dairy once you get off of them. At least, that's always been my experience with antibiotics. Maybe get yourself checked...functional medicine is the way to go.. find a good functional medicine doctor, nutrionist or register dietitian who focuses on gut health and they can test you for Sibo and also a comprehensive stool test GImap test. Remember IBS is not a real diagnosis.. it is just symptoms that are similar to everyone elses but the reason could be different for everyone, dusbiosis, sibo, sifo, low stomach acid, leaky gut or gut permeability etc.... the fact that you cant stand fiber is an indication that there might be some kind of dysbiosis or an overgrowth of bacteria. The food isnt the problem but what is going there and when you start healing the gut you will be able to tolerate again more of those foods!
