Today I am collabing with Rae, also known as Super Rae Dizzle! I decided to test out Winsor and Newton Student Paints known as their "Galeria" paints, and compare them to their professional line of paints known as their "Artists Acrylic" was there much difference in pigmentation, quality, or dry time? Watch to find out and let me know what you think!

I would be interested to see these same two paintings side by side in one year, five years, ten years. One of the major claims from professional paints is longevity. If it lasts longer without fading, cracking, etc, then the expensive paints are worth it.
@Lexiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii
@Lexiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii 6 лет назад
Exactly! Artist paints are archival, but student and beginner paints are not usually as high quality in that regard.
@foreropa

That´s excatly what I was thinking about, it´s more about archival quality than anything else.

Student paints are still pretty damn good in that regard. I wouldn't expect a student grade painting to suffer in a decade. If you are doing gallery work then alright.

What an awesome idea! I think student paints are great and I used them for the majority of my art-life with the exception of the last couple years. It's freeing, especially for beginners, to learn and experiment in art while not worrying about messing up and wasting expensive paint. Lovely video!

The waves look just a bit better in the professional paints, but for the rest of the painting, I like the student better
@spencerp6243
@spencerp6243 6 лет назад
Yeah, I think the same thing. It might have something to do with the low range of colours in the professional ones, but the student one definitely had better blending in the sky, and the red was much better.
@cindyespindola4946
@cindyespindola4946 6 лет назад
I think the same of the water and I liked more the boat "thing" (in spanish would be Vela but no idea how is it called in english Xd) in the professional too because it seemed more realistic and better shaded, but the clouds and the rest I would stay with the student's one

I feel like the waves look better because she had more practice painting waves from the student paints, since she says she doesnt typically paint that.

I love both of this! I really love how you painted the water with the professional paints, but one thing that this showed for sure was, that you don´t need expensive things to do great art, as you showed us with the studend paints :)
@ChloeRoseArt
@ChloeRoseArt 6 лет назад
thank you!! Yes I am a firm believer in not shelling out for expensive art supplies every time, especially if it's just for fun or practice!
@ginasartcorner5686
@ginasartcorner5686 6 лет назад
YOu´re welcome! Yeah thats for sure :) I think its the best to get the cheaper one to test it and as you say have fun to it. When the art supply is to expensive it kinds of blocks you to try it, at least its for me like that :D with the cheaper one its like. . . it doesn´t hurt if the endresult isn´t that great

The primary difference between professional and student grade paints for most brands is the pigment load. The pigment is what you're actually paying for--typically, student grade paints have more binder, less pigment.
@ChloeRoseArt
@ChloeRoseArt 6 лет назад
yeah, unfortunately I didn't notice a huge amount of difference with this particular brand between the two! I will try out some other ones in the future, I was kind of expecting more pigment and smoothness than what I got for the professional brand but overall I still liked it!
@NiamhCreates
@NiamhCreates 6 лет назад
Plus, artist-grade materials tend to be lightfast, whereas student-grade is not.
@oyvindsholm
@oyvindsholm 5 лет назад
@@ChloeRoseArt You would have if you had stirred in the binder instead of complaining that it was "runny", since the running is just because they separate. That's pretty much bound to happen when mixing a solid and a liquid, so just stir it back in there, make sure to get it even.

Must admit to disliking the Windsor and Newton paints. The professional Acrylics are gloopy and hard to get going. They seem to separate in the tube and that drives me mad!! 😠after all, they're not that cheap. They lack vibrancy, and I love my paints vibrant. Their watercolour paints are better, and I've found that you can't beat cotman to start out with. I love Rembrandt, Sminka and White Night watercolour paints. Don't use acrylics often, however when I do, I usually use Rembrandt or Tudor paints.
@ChloeRoseArt
@ChloeRoseArt 6 лет назад
ahhh how annoying this is a normal thing! I feel a bit ripped off :/ crazy expensive for one that was entirely useless! I LOVE the Winsor and Newton inks and their cotman watercolors too!!! I'll look into those brands :D
@jazzpear8877

You're supposed to mix it with medium!!!! Using these paints straight out of the tube is like using watercolours straight out of the tube.

KaoKay what mediums would you use? Ive never painted in acrylic before but im looking to start, so im quite confused and, i’ll admit, a bit scared. Any tips?

Anikah Rabbani Liquitex Matte Fluid medium, or Gel Medium if you want a thicker consistency.

Anikah Rabbani also get a palette knife to mix with, you'll waste less paint mixing and keep your brushes from getting over loaded or clogged up

The reason why the red and white were so weird might be because the ingredients seperated, you could try to fix it by squishing the paint in tube to try and get to mix together again

Hi Chloe Rose Art you are the reason I wake up in the morning, the reason I am happy. I love you!😍
@jazzpear8877
@jazzpear8877 6 лет назад
You didn't squish the tube to mix the paint before you squeezed it out. It sometimes gets separated during shipping, especially if it's exposed heat or cold. That's not the paints fault. I've used both these paints as well, and there's a huge difference in how the paint behaves, and I much prefer the Professional paints. If they are too thick for your liking you are meant to mix it with a fluid medium. This is meant to extend the life of your paint as well.
@ChloeRoseArt
@ChloeRoseArt 6 лет назад
good to know, I'm new to professional paints like this myself so appreciate you taking the time to give me this information :) I'll looking into a fluid medium next time! It didn't mention it on the website or the packaging so I didn't even think about that.

I can definitely see a difference in colour. The student looks more warm and cheery while the professional looks more serious and mature. Plus the colours in the professional like the red and browns looks lighter while the blues are darker. And what you did with the clouds can really be seen with the professional more than with the student.

@paintedcrow

Separated paint isn't necessarily a bad thing! Generally paint is just pigment and some kind of medium, like acrylic resin or linseed oil, and what you're getting is just a settling of the pigment. Grab your palette knife and mix 'em back together, they'll be fine. This basically always works for oil paints, and it should work for acrylics too. I take this more as a sign that they haven't added funky binding agents or anything--like how if your peanut butter settles and you need to stir it, it means you've got really good peanut butter.

I've used Galeria for years, and they are great quality, especially when painting bigger canvases. They are not as vibrant as the professional paints, but compared to some other brands' student grade acrylic paints, they are amazing. The great thing is, they pro and student grade W&N paints work nicely together, so I always buy the Galeria version of the basic shades, and then go for the pro version for the shades that need to extra special.

I love this! I can say that I thought the black of the artists set was deeper but that might be the odd angle of the camera when you did the testing. I have used (in gouache) the Windsor Newton and Reeve's as comparison and there are noticeable differences, particularly in the white. Reeve's white looks yellow in comparison, other colors (like red) dry shiny, and you don't want shiny gouache. For Acrylic, I use the Artists Loft from Michael's and I love them. They're the cheapest, beginner level (I think) but I haven't had any issues at all. Maybe it's because I don't know any better! I'd hate to try the expensive type like Windsor and know what I'm missing! I varnish the hell out of my canvases when I'm done, so if they last the lifetime of the owner, whomever that happens to be when I'm done with them, it's all good. I don't expect to be like Picasso or Giotto hundreds of years from now.

I don't know if this applies to acrylics since I don't use them a lot, but often professional art supplies also have a different lightfastness/permanence compared to student grade, since they're supposed to last decades and not fade. From what I've seen, proper student grade stuff do have decent lightfastness these days but the professional version is usually superior at least if the packaging is to be believed. This applies at least to watercolour, coloured pencil and oil paints (and then there's the whole dye-based-not-lightfast-at-all category which includes Copics/other alcohol based markers that I personally use a lot). Lightfastness is probably not a concern most ppl starting out have and if the work isn't going to be displayed anywhere, it's naturally not a concern, but I think its good to be aware of what your finished work can take and how well it's going to last if you sell your work. BUT W&N student grade stuff is usually very good with permanence&lightfastness. I just feel like it's a thing that's good to mention when comparing professional supplies to student grade stuff because the difference is not just about what the final product looks like and how they behave while painting. :p

Jerry's Artarama did a great demo of comparing different brands of acrylic paints. The fillers in cheaper acrylic paints really only show in the Wet VS Dry color shift. there are other differences too. I know that in Watercolor paints the way a pant moves on the paper can be changed with the fillers in cheaper paints (Read student grade here) also the longevity is greater in the better quality watercolor paints. I once used some cheap paint for a lady who insisted on buying the supplies and in a matter of weeks! the color had shifted and I was asked for a refund! I pointed out SHE had bought the supplies and told her the fault was hers NOT mine as she did not use my recommended supplies list. She replied "The stuff you wanted was just to expensive!" Now you can see why I replied! Needless to say that was the last time I let anyone dictate what I would use creating my artwork! YES There are less expensive supplies you do not need the best in every situation, but I have found there are reasons you use the best when you can! There my long winded rant and 2¢ opinion!

That went really badly :-(, especially people who have nothing to do with painting don't know why things shouldn't be used. In my opinion, it is also quite strange that many people think that artists can get great results with everything and if that is not the case the artist has not worked well enough, even with things that later happen with the painting, as if the way of working always determines how durable something is. That is probably also the problem why many who start with painting, their bad first attempts to refer to that they are not good enough, instead of the material was bad to handle. Let me guess those were those extra cheap paints from the hardware store. If I ordered someone to do a mural or canvas painting for me, I would expect this person to bring their own paints and the flat-rate material costs are included in the invoice, paint can only be calculated approximately. I don't expect anyone to list that 30ml magenta was used by company y, 200ml titanium white by x and so on. The colour palette does not have to be completely bought again for each painting.
