Today I sat down with some Gouache and tried it for the first time! It was a very fun challenge I’ve had planned for a couple months. Before anyone asks, no this was not inspired by Jazza, my video has been planned for a long time and sometimes us artists just have the same ideas! However, in order to avoid anyone saying I didn’t credit Jazza, here is a link to his video in which he made an awesome piece with Gouache;

Isn't Gouache basically the result if acrylic and watercolour had a baby?

• mocha_ melody • @ *mocha_melody * Not really, Gouache is just opaque watercolour, like “normal” watercolour it can be re-wetted after it is dry, it will not become waterproof as acrylic will. It is very good for building layers, but you have to be careful not to scrub the new layers or they will mix with the lower layers. I found it very good for painting feathers or fur. Once you get sufficient thickness the new layers “sink” giving you very subtle effects. There is also an acrylic gouache, which I have never used so cannot comment on it.

Gouache great because it’s so easy to get different effects from it, it’s basically like watercolours and acrylics mixed together. I also think it’s really nice to apply because it’s so smooth. Though I feel like sometimes it can be a bit bumpy and uneven when it dries

@@Snookiekills have you tried using it with acrylics? If you are looking to make a piece using mixed media , acrylics and gouache actually go well but you have to remember which you can re-activate and which you can't lol. Gouache is watercolour paint that is thick and creamy in consistency, and so has the ability to be opaque. I love painting with it. It dries quickly, however, it can be mixed with Gum Arabic to lengthen drying time, and iridescent mediums to give it a sparkle or shine. Blending is easy, it's no different than normal waterpaint. You can layer or use it as a wash. You can wet your paper and the Gouache will spread and mix just like water paint if fluid enough. Dried on the pallet, it activates just as water paint does.. The main differences, are, the Opacity of the paint its 100% once the paint is dry, you can layer lighter paint onto dark and even the white is great! However, if you layer the paint too thickly, it will crack just like the old poster paints used to. Its a strange paint, it's rich and creamy as in oils, versatile as waterpaint, and has the lasting quality of Acrylic. You can even use it on canvas, so long as it has a decent layer of Gesso on it.

Oil paint does take much longer to dry than acrylic, so it is usable for a lot longer, but you cannot actually reactivate it once it is entirely dry. (If you can somehow though, let me know, because that would be cool.)
@mamachan569

I know that oil have an effect on it, maybe try to put a thin layer of oil ( the one you can buy to had with the oil paint while you paint) over the painting and let it sit for a day ( but do a test, it would be sad to ruin a good painting).

you can go a long way with only tiny splodges of paint and enough water. If you water them down enough you can make them almost work like water colours. what you want to do with a gouache paintings is to start with really watery paint as groundwork and get thicker with every layer/the darker you go. For blending I recommend to only try with thick layers: use a damp clean brush and blend the colours together. I hope my comment was helpful for you, chloe.

Hello! I love using gouache! Apparently they used to use it for posters and stuff because it's great at making solid, flat colours. I don't mix the colours like you do, I wait until it dries and add dark and light tones over the top without mixing it in, and yes add water!! Not too much water though, you want a nice paste. My favourite gouache is from The Works, and it's like 3 quid for 14 tubes - and better than Daler Rowney by a long shot, do recommend.

I done a huge painting of link from breath of the wild using these paints and I loved the vibrancy of the colours and worked very well. I found that if I left two layer down colours to dry I could use a clean wet brush to reactivate the paint and by doing so the colours blended really well. I haven't used this paint very much either and i could benefit from a few tutorials from an expert but my overall experience was that they were really fun to use.The finish was this lovely matt finish which looks so good on my wall.

Hi Chloe. I am about to start my own Gouache experience. I bought some cheap gouache to start my journey with. I have set up a 'palette' of sorts that I created using a set of medicine dispensing cases, the sort that are little lidded, self contained pots, the sort used for a months worth of medicines. They are perfect to use as individual paint pans. I like my paints in pans as a rule, so they work well for me. Anyway, I start tomorrow on my very first painting in gouache, and I'm equal parts- a bag of quivering nerves, or alternately, as cool as a cucumber about the whole thing. If the painting turns out halfway decent, then I will post it on facebook for all the world to see. Thanks for reviewing Arteza. I have had my eye on their watercolour pads for a short while now. I will use your code to get them for me and my grandaughter. With regards from South Wales. UK

Gouache has always been my favourite paint medium (unless you count inks, then it's that) but I've had a hell of a time finding it. I used it in collage, back when I was 19 (I'm a couple weeks from 35 now) and you can not only get amazing results from gouache, but you can mix it with watercolour to get some amazing blends; especially when mixing coloured wc with white gouache. You have no idea how happy I am that you did a video about gouache! I still (in Canada... Arteza aren't yet available here) have a hard time finding a good price on gouache, if I can find it at all. I have pestered Arteza a lot on instagram, about getting their products to Canada (and about them coming out with copic dupes... they're working on that too and the way they worded their responses, the markers will be sooner than Canadian shipping! Anyway, the point of my comment was on thank you profusely for making gouache just that much better known about. ♡♡. Thanks Chloe 💕

Arteza is a great brand! Quality you can afford, and be perfectly happy with when it comes to results!! I also have their brushpens, and they are great! Oooh, would love to get my hands on some of that paper, tho!!!! Your picture is wonderful! Love your videos, you always inspire me to look at my artstash with fresh eyes!
