She might have developed cataracts. We had a sheep that had them and she could see some light and some movement, but she followed the herd through sound and scent. And would follow the fence lines of the pasture. Kind of like your duck is doing with the side of the hoop coop.

Ask Allison to examine the Bean's eyes. While Allison is not a vet, she is trained to assess eyes, and animal eyes are not really different from human eyes. The important thing is that you are giving your animals their best lives. Mud season has come early! Wellies and four-wheel-drive and appropriate truck tires are essential! Barn cats have the best personalities!

I think he is giving his animals their best life. There isnt much that could be done about the ducks blindness and the fact he doesnt just cull the duck speaks for itself and the love he has for his animals. Clearly its still able to find food, water and the flock. Not much else needs to be done.

What's she supposed to do? The only thing would be to observe for cataracts, which aren't obvious here. You need different types of equipment. This is a duck that went blind. The eyes don't look clouded as with cataracts. It's clear the duck is blind when there were no flinches or blinks to his hand. What else is needed to know? BTW avian eyes are similar in function, but they are considerably different then human.
@wezul
@wezul 4 месяца назад
An animal can still be blind even if the eyes dilate and otherwise appear externally normal. The behavior is a greater indicator, and Bean is definitely acting like she can't see. I've had two ferrets go blind and the behavior is much the same - walking at odd angles instead of directly towards a target, bumping into things.

Here’s my advice from a blind person to a blind duck. The best thing that could be done is to move all of the different bowls and water dishes, and anything else that is on the floor to the sides of the area to prevent her from hitting them. it’s probably the best thing that could be done for bean. The other option is giving her a slightly smaller space so that she doesn’t lose track of her friends. You can probably try putting her in with the weird chickens to see if she gets along with them. Maybe attach some small bells to some of the ducks to help her pinpoint their location? Just kidding. Although it has been helpful for me in the past. I am not completely blind, but I am very visually impaired. Hope this helps.

@coryart

Moving all of the different bowls and water dishes to the sides wouldn't help, as she seems to rely on the sides of the high tunnel as a border bumper to help guide her. Putting her in with the weird chickens might be best for her safety but not for her nature, as she clearly only wants to be with other ducks, as she is constantly seeking them out. I'm with Morgan, do nothing different and just let her live her best life as she chooses.

@GoldShawFarm I have two 15 year old blind ducks! They are both runners, named Victor and MingMei. Victor started going blind around 5 years old from cataracts. Vic currently can only sense shadows and movement. MingMei started having issues after 10 years old. She also is developing cataracts, but hers developed much slower. She can still see a decent amount, but she can get spooked if you don't tell her whats happening. My ducks are 100% indoor pets, and have a huge "Senior Living Center" I custom built for them and their dwindling sight. Our vet said that if she tried surgery, there's a high chance it wouldn't work anyways. With their old age, its easier to adjust life for them, keeping them happy for however long they decide to grace us with their presence.

I am more worried how she would find food and water, especially the water bowl and food bowl would be a bit taller for her now. I had a 3.5 year old hen that went blind for a couple of months and slowly got her vision back although not 100%.

We haven't had any blind ducks, yet but we do have one we fear going blind. She was one of our first ducks and was bought just as a random mix. As we learned ore about ducks we sadly learned that her breed has a 80% chance of developing brain tumors, blindness being one of the possible first signs of brain damage. For the many years I have owned her she has thankfully never shown any signs of tumors, and is the best duck ever. She likes to be held and cuddled, she will come over and asked to be picked up. Sometimes we let her come in the house for bath time in the big tub, with warm water and all the peas she can eat. We try to give her the best life possible and she has paid us back more than we could ever imagine. All this being said, out of fear of her possibly going blind we have prepared for it all these years by ensuring her area is as free of "pokey" things as possible. Her coop has smooth walls and all wired areas are securely covered. She does have trouble walking, she came to us with a broken leg as a duckling and walks with a limp or duck swagger ( As my kids put it), so we have stone ramps going in and out of all the pools. It can be a slight hassle when changing and moving water but she is worth it. If you want to make things easier and safer for Bean when you release them to the fields, you might want to choose a few friends for her and give her a decent but restricted size yard, just so she doesn't wonder to far while following the other ducks. Best of luck, whatever you decide and thanks for the video.

I recommend you dont release the blind duck to the pasture with the other ducks. She might end up getting lost, getting cold, harassed by corvids (they can tell when a bird is abnormal and will absolutely go for them and it is not quick and painless) or even get easily snatched by a bird of prey or other small predators. Either leave her with the weird chickens or give her some duck company and keep her in an enclosure. Or just process her.

Sweet Bean! She is doing her best to be a good little duck. Still think that if you dug trenches towards the springs and used the tractor to shovel most of the snow around the pens towards the trenches, then you would have a lot less mud in the warmer weather. Laying down some old hay would give a stable base to the ground and possibly allow for some grass to grow up for the birds to enjoy. Love The Pablo Barncat. Jenny, too.

I grew up with a blind pheasant. The one thing my blind bird needed was to be in a coop that had sides. This way he would know the area really well and feel safe. My pheasant had a big out door enclosure in the summer and indoor one in the winter. I found when I did let him out of his enclosure, he had too much space. He didn't have that wall to run into, to know this is as far a he can go.

@goldshawfarm I loved this story of Blind Bean. In the spring I had a black squirrel take up nesting in my back yard eaves trough. After watching it come and go, I realized it might be blind. When I watched closer, I saw that it had white eyes (I’ve never seen black squirrels with white eyes) so I assumed it was a genetic difference or it was blind. I subsequently named the squirrel “Stevie Wonder”. It was fascinating how it navigated around my yard and stayed close to my home. Interestingly, the other rather bossy and territorial squirrels gave it space. In the long run, I had to rehome Stevie as our condos have strict maintenance rules to repel rodents and other critters. The animal world is way more accepting and inclusive than we often think. 💛

Cat are very territorial! If forced to share space, they can manage it, but even then they have their own claimed spots. Otherwise they didn’t even look at each other.

When cats go from loving to bitting and taking a swing at you for no apparent reason it can be because they are overestimated. Each cat has their limit on what they can handle and if you watch them close enough you can usually see some signs before the act of aggression. Ears going slightly sideways or tail starts to twitch is the cats way of telling you "I've had enough". This is not fool-proof, I mean we are talking about cats but pay close attention the signs might be there.

Isn't Bean at risk to hurt herself especially when she starts living outside the hoop coop?

I've worked in the veterinary field for 15+ yrs. She was sighted when she was a baby by those videos u included. This developed either suddenly or over time.

I read somewhere that dogs circle around seven times before they lie down and it's got something to do with flattening down the grass to make a bed. Hmmm..

Maybe the other weird chickens can't fly that high. Make them a lower roost? They will be forever grateful.

Untitled Goose Game added co-op a few years ago. If you have a Switch and a means to capture footage from it, I think you and Alison playing that game together would be a lot of fun, for both of you and for your viewers, and maybe attract some new audience. "Goose Farmer Plays Untitled Goose Game" sounds like a very amusing video title.

Does Allison think Bean was blind when she used to cuddle them? Pablo being pet: "Niiiice. Niiiice. NOPE!"*scratch/bite*

It's so awesome how is she overcame. And it seems like all the other birds don't bother her just because she can't see. My sister had a dog that went blind and her cats would help her dog navigate the house and prevent the dog from running into the wall. The cats would go between the wall and the dog and kind of nudge him along to guide him

My oldest duck, Blue, is 20 years old. She lost her sight about 5 years ago. She’s not allowed to free range anymore so, she stays locked in her own run. Her daughter, Patches, stays in the run with her. I talk to Blue when I walk in to feed them, she hears me and comes over to eat and drink. She hears where I pour the food and water. Patches guides her, as well. They are so sweet together ❤
