As someone who have counseled a lot of men over the years, I think John hit the nail on the head with this call. That idea of wanting to hear im proud of you is powerful. Many women hear this and think that its weak for men to need this but any man worth his salt wants this. I'm grateful my wife tells me this all of the time because it builds me up so much.

He did say he listens to you sometimes 9 hours. I smell a rat!

I'd love to hear her side of the story.

He needs to get to the root of the real issue for his wife, he did something long time ago that hurt her to the core and she hasn’t recovered. Ask her and listen to what she says it was. Something happened for her to be holding back from you this way.

He has ill intention already so hopefully he leaves his wife so blessings can come on both ends.

It's so easy for other women to seem kind when they are not in this situation that your wife is in because of your actions... of course they're kind they don't know anything about you😂

Soooo… she put up with his entrepreneurial failures for years and years and now he is finally making money and he wants to leave her for another woman (probably a woman half his age). This is a tale as old as time. She was his “starter wife.” The one men use as a placeholder until they can get a “trophy wife.” The starter wife puts in all of her time and energy into that man but she will never see the rewards of her investment. This is why I don’t believe women should date men who have “potential.” Get your life together first and then date.

What? I don't get the generalities. He has to apologize for not being as far along as he should be? He keeps apologizing before the marriage and still is apologizing after the marriage. Why are they married?

This sounds so much like asking permission to cheat to me -- or at least to leave his wife. And Dr. John ticked me off about women not wanting men to express their feelings. I call BS on that. Is there some women like that? Sure. Same as there are some women who don't express their feelings. I think you need to speak to this specific circumstance. I think this guy thinks he's special. Women who are not your wife don't put up with your BS so it's much easier to be super kind.

Everytime I hear one of these.. Whether man or woman.. I want to hear the other persons side. People will ALWAYS tell the story that makes them sound better. They could be the person in the right but still will edit and not tell one wrong they’ve ever done. So, I wish he had more couples calls where we can see both sides.

I hope they stick together. This was my mom and dad 7ish years ago. They were terrible to live with. Jesus got involved and my home was finally my peace place. I was so lucky to be able to witness that.

I think it's a lack of acceptance. Sometimes there are thoughts such as: will it ever be enough? Is my partner trying to find a way out? Should this relationship continue if I'm content w/ the way things are and she's not?

I relate to this man. For years amd years i worked 70 hours per week, busting my ass, grinding away and all i got from my wife was the feeling "not good enough." That cuts sooo deep. Especially when you feel as though you hold her to 1/10 the standard she holds you to.

Does she work? What’s she doing to contribute? She sounds entitlement to me. If she believes that (for whatever reason) she deserves better she should go out and find it. I think Delony missed the mark here big time. This marriage is obviously falling into an abyss because she feels he doesn’t make enough. A marriage built on that principle will never last. I think it’s irresponsible on Delony’s part to not be more straightforward about the state of the marriage.

When a man begins an answer with “Honestly? …” and then continues on, I stop listening. I stop believing that he is answering truthfully. There is something he’s hiding. Maybe hiding from me, maybe hiding from himself.

It’s true, when I tell my husband I’m proud of him, his posture changes. He melts into me and love is poured out.

This is the VAST majority of marriages these days. People need to start asking themselves before they get married the simple question which is WHY do you want to get married? Why? What is the upside? What he is describing is not worth it. His wife is an anchor, and he is not strong enough to lead the household. She doesn't respect him (and no doubt her phone holds many secrets). He is walking on egg shells and getting punished for being a "nice guy". She (the wife) already ended the marriage, this guy just doesn't know it. Marriage counseling these days is just an act on feminism 101. Waste of money and time. Cheating is not the answer for this guy. He needs to decide if he wants to deal with this for years until she ends it (and financially wipes him out - she isn't hiding who she is) or he can end it and move on with his life. Proverbs 21:9 is where men go if the home isn't peaceful. I'm not sure what the other side of the story is, but I don't doubt he's looking outside the home. But he's not getting what men need in the home for sure. Read Dr Laura Schlessinger's book - "The Proper Care and Feeding of Husbands" for all the details.

This one hit home, I just went through a separation of a 15 year relationship for exactly this, I was working a regular job, plus using all my free time to try and build something, it is soul crushing when you barely get any sleep trying to do the entrepreneur thing and the one person that's supposed to have your back only attacks you when things are not easy, sometimes you just have to shed the fat and find someone with equal values

Take responsibility for your Inner Child, you depend on it for feeling fully alive. Envy and jealousy can be very harmful, and some are very skillful in hiding them from you, but good at blurring your perception of them. "Nobody thinks you have done anything worth mentioning." Listen with attention: is there even one true word in this message? "I'm proud of you" - as a native Swedish speaker I have a huge issue with the excessive use of that expression in the USA. Do you know, how many American movies end with a parent at long last telling the child "I'm proud of you" to the child's great surprise, and kind of resurrection. I feel like crying... I think it is very healthy to be able to be proud of what one has accomplished. And it's very constructive, if parents and spouses confirm: you have every reason to be proud of yourself for x, y, z... I think it would be healthy if loved ones would say: "I admire your ..." or "I'm impressed by your..." or "I'm inspired by you when..." adding something well done, or some habit or character trait. I fear that my underlining that I am proud of my loved ones, confuses the boundaries between us: you are responsible for your victories and choices, and for your messing things up, they are not mine actions, feelings, duties, I'm not responsible for them. You are free, I'm free, and I'm neither proud nor ashamed of you. Say you get bad grades, I'm not ashamed of you. You make a bad choice, I will not feel guilty for it. You don't make much money, I'm not less for it. I don't own you, and you don't owe me achievements. It's possible that WE make choices or efforts together, and then we can be proud of US. It is delightful when that happens. It would be a good thing in many cases to have more of that in one's life.

Vulnerability means there will be a conversation. Men are used to saying things, now they call it vulnerability (even if it isn’t), and expecting it to be the final word. That’s not vulnerability. Delony can’t know if this guy is vulnerable without hearing exactly what was said. This guy wants permission to cheat. That’s the opposite of vulnerability. Nah, women have been encouraging, loving, mothering, counseling, supporting men, and telling men “all the things they need to hear” a perpetual moving goal post, for all of time … regardless of the character of the man … and now we don’t have to endure that emotional abuse and societal manipulation/coercion … and men reduce it to “blue pill?” Wtf Delony?!? Or…and bare with me…he has had inconsistent income for over a decade which can cause financial instability and stress on his family so now he is thinking about cheating and he is looking for a justification for it. Wow. Just Wow. My Dad (who is my hero) always taught me to NOTICE, APPRECIATE, and EXPRESS my gratitude and respect to the man in my life. He instructed me that if my fella did anything masculine for me (fix something, create something, show wisdom), I should take time to reflect on how impressive it was. That advice has game-changed the quality of my romantic relationship and the satisfaction of my fella. He always said that he hadn't ever experienced that in any relationship before. Fathers are so important in educating their daughters right to enable them to have a happy romantic relationship.
