Listening to a man burn to death screaming has to be the hardest thing to live with, and then to realize that man could have saved the other man and it would have been you burning to death.

Less than a month before I started 2nd grade I was in a fatal accident. My grandmother made a left turn through a red light and collided with another vehicle. This was in 1968. No seat belts. My grandmother was thrown from the car and never woke up. I was in my cousins child protection seat and only got a bruised arm. I'm now in my 60's and still remember this event like it was yesterday. As an adult I looked up the newspaper article which confirmed many of my memories. I'm still impacted by what happened to me. I hope the caller gets the right type of therapy and can process what happened to her.

Such great advice, Dr. Delony! The only thing that helped me get through survivor's guilt was deciding the best thing I could do to honor my friend who lost her battle to cancer at the same time I survived mine was to continue helping those I can and building a life of purpose and live each day cherishing my loved ones. My heart breaks for this lady. Truly a tragedy that she had no control over. Wishing her the best and inner peace soon.

One of my dearest friend’s son was visiting me and my daughter from Austria. He was like my own son and I loved him dearly too. He died in a car wreck between my house and my daughter’s. The details of everything is horrible and so hard. There was no way around survivors guilt. Why did her son die while visiting me and my is fine. The grief and the guilt was so hard. There was no way around it. It hits you even though your mind knows you have no part of what happened. It took 10 years before the residue of the guilt was gone. He was an amazing beautiful human being and was only 27. He blessed all those in his life. I was the last one to hug him and our last conversation was how important God is in our lives. You can’t go around the guilt. It just is and you just have to go through it like grief.

My thoughts exactly. The constant interruptions of this woman bravely sharing her story was painful to listen to. I'm not sure that judging her on the details she remembered & was choosing to share was at all helpful or insightful. These details were part of her story - they were clearly contributing to her misery & preventing her from healing. Rather than cutting her off, the proper thing to do would be to let her share whatever she needs to & help her work through those painful memories. It felt so invalidating & rude. Those details might not matter to him, but they mattered to HER. I think this call was far beyond his scope. Very uncomfortable listen, totally missed the mark on this call.

It's not just truck drivers unfortunately. But truck drivers and companies know that their days are numbered and within a decade, will be replaced by self-driving trucks (Walmart and Amazon already have almost 100). Sadly, it's a symptom. The disease is late stage capitalism (that,s when people serve capitalism instead of capitalism serving people). Doesn't change this lady's suffering and probably her entire family. @@Peanutbutta-ct4vn my statement wasn’t toward people that have PTSD or trying to shame them in any way. It was about helping this caller. And I would venture to guess that most people who have PTSD would prefer not to have it and the suffering that goes with it, and would have appreciated being offered something that could have helped them experience less pain. When traumatic events are new (less than 6 months) there is a window to step in and help someone process the trauma before it becomes more engrained into their nervous system. Also, not everyone who experienced trauma develops PTSD. There are specific criteria that go with that diagnosis. EMDR is not “pseudoscience “ There is actually quite a large body of research supporting it’s effectiveness.

CPTSD is “small t” trauma, sustained over long periods of time. (being told “be quiet”, “stop being so loud” as a kid from ages 6-10. not huge by itself, but over time, aggregates to big behavioral changes, or self beliefs) “big t” Trauma (PTSD) is one very traumatizing event (or many huge traumatizing events over a period of time)

@@louisvuitton1859 let’s not minimize the CPTSD. CPTSD is being assaulted and impregnated on Monday, nose busted off face on Tuesday, chased off the road on wed, spat on face on thurs, strangled until wet on friday, walls and doors broken on Sat, leg broken on Sunday. Repeat until the law finally decides to not allow bail, while society tells you, you deserved it and enjoy being abused, stalked and terrorized… now THATS CPTSD! Don’t minimize the diagnosis. This hit me in the gotchas. I'm an OTR driver, only got to drive one yr. Been back home because the hubby's health was worsening and I just couldn't throw him under the bus. I've driven that route and it, and so many other routes like it, can be utterly treacherous. I narrowly escaped going thru our truck's windshield on Donner Pass, my codriver was finishing up his shift but he had to lock up the brakes with everything he had to avoid hitting a terrible 18 wheeler wreck that had totally blocked the road... on a downslope. Our trailer almost jackknifed. I was coming down the ladder but lost my grip and went airborne off that ladder. All we could smell afterwards was the smoke from burning tire rubber. It's amazing how fast 80k lbs can move when you're praying for a couple more seconds of braking time to avoid the wreck and not go off the cliff. I also had someone pull a gun on me at a stoplight because they were drunk and pissed off. But the nottom line was that we survived. Maybe telling this tale will help the next driver slow down and think twice before driving so recklessly. Extra important what with new drivers with lots to learn. Bless your heart. You will find peace.
