I Thought I Knew What to Expect with the Jet JS-400... I was WRONG!

So I was wrong. I was wrong about this Jet JS-400 and I'll show you why in 3 minutes. We get to know the Jet Guitars JS400 today and get to know exactly what to expect right out of the box. Can this Strat copy under £200 be any good? With a roasted maple neck, HSS set up, bone nut and two-point tremolo, the specs sure do look good on paper, but can this be the ultimate budget guitar? Big thanks to Jet for sending this out to me to try, but full disclaimer: it is not a paid demo nor do I get to keep it, so this is 100% my thoughts.
If you like these reviews and demos, don't forget to drop me a comment and let me know. By dropping a comment there, you will please the algorithm gods and make my videos more visible, which would be awesome. If you have one of these yourself, let me know how you are getting on with it yourself in a comment or a video response, I'd love to hear how it is getting on in your rig through different amps and guitars.
The demo gear in this video is all run through Practical Patch cables, including instrument cables and patch cables. These are using some top-quality components, including Neutrik jacks and Van Damme cable and are hand-assembled and tested in the UK. After having off-the-shelf cables for years and suffering failures again and again, I bought some Practical Patch cables and have been happier than ever with them. They also don’t cost you the Earth, which some other hand made cable companies seem to do. If you want to find out more, head over to www.practicalpatch.co.uk to see what they have to offer.

Pretty much anything can sound good with a proper setup, except if it has a huge problem that can't be fixed. Good thing about this guitar, it can be a great modding platform so if there's anything you feel like changing it would be relatively easy to switch a part out for something more to your liking. My first electric guitar was a squier standard strat and after a while the pickup selector wasn't really working, so I replaced it and the bridge pickup for a hot rail and it is now the guitar I play the most. I'm probably going to get this guitar for a mod project, mainly because of the heel joint and the roasted maple neck which could be useful for me in the long run for confort and stability, and change the pickups to some toneriders and if necessary I'll change the bridge to a gotoh or a vegatrem

You've got it spot on there. It's a really budget guitar, it's not going to be absolutely perfect out of the box but they are built solid and the neck profile is really comfortable. Let me know how you get on with it 👍

I bought this late last year. It’s the shell pink one with the rosewood board. I gotta say, I was properly disappointed when I got it. The trem was terrible, as the holes for the saddles where slightly misaligned and the tremolo did not want to stay in tune as the “knife edges” were really flat, so it wouldn’t return to the same position. No amount of lubrication was gonna help that. So I replaced the trem with a Wilkinson trem with sturdier better aligned saddles. I ended up just decking the bridge anyways, for better tuning stability. And the tuners were horrid. They kept tune okay, but they were really clunky, with inconsistent tightness and rattley action. So I changed them out too for some cheap guyker locking tuners, which greatly improved the tuning experience and sting changes. Also, the frets where the roughest/grittiest I’ve played out of the box. Almost like they leveled and crowned the frets without sanding after. I went over them with about 6 grits from about 600 to micro mesh. And then I polished the with metal polish, then some f-one oil on the fretboard to finish. It’s really great playing and sounding now, as the pickups sound pretty nice, and the neck feels amazing. There was definitely a great guitar in there, but it took some proper elbow grease and setup work to get it there. I’m a bit apprehensive about recommending it to anyone without knowing they have experience in setup work and maintenance. I do actually like the guitar, but I honestly had a way better experience with most Harley Benton’s out of the box. They’re not perfect either, but I’ve had to do way less work with most of those.

Ah man, that sucks to hear. I tried to outline all the issues I had with it as it wasn't perfect out of the box, but it sounds like you got a particularly rough one out of the box. The neck profile was a winner for me, really comfortable and slim. It sounds like their QC let's them down a bit if they vary so much between guitars. I'm glad you got it sorted and it plays much better now though 👍

Nice review mate! 😃👍 I've been gigging this Guitar (well... the 450 & the Fazley Phynica 720 = same thing😜) for a few months now. Had all the intentions of changing the pickups - just not got round to it yet. Pickups are ok-ish, to my ears (on mine). I know the upgrades will take it to the next level - just need to get ma finger oot! Cheers bro! 🍻
@BudgetPedalChap
@BudgetPedalChap Год назад
Yeah it was one of those things that before I got it, I was dead set that I'd need to change the pickups out but when I actually played them especially at volume, they were good enough for me not to care too much. The tuners were a weak point though, so even though I didn't have any massive issues I would definitely be changing those out. My first guitar cost more than they are asking for this though and it has way less going for it 🤣🤣 they are decent bits of kit especially if you don't mind getting your hands dirty and sorting out the minor issues
@TheStratpicker
@TheStratpicker Год назад
The neck and fret job alone justify the purchase price IMO. The tuners on mine were the only real let down as they were vague and had inconsistent tension (I always fit Planet Waves locking tuners anyway) and although the bridge and trem worked well I have had it blocked, and generally set up by a pro luthier. I also had him fit a Rolling Mills humbucker, more to see how they are than through necessity. I couldn't be happier, although my Fender Highway One, which is still the bees knees really, is a little sad locked away in its case while the Jet takes pride of place at the moment. Light as a feather, extremely playable, especially at the high end of the neck due to the cutaway design, and the stock single coils teamed up with the Rolling Mills offer a great variety of sounds.
@BudgetPedalChap

The Pacifica. The Jet guitars are great but need little tweaks to get playing just right, they might also need a string change and a bit of a set up. That roasted maple neck makes the guitar worth its price tag from that alone.I personally feel like all its parts are more than decent to be used in a gig(or studio) after a new set of strings and a new setup.In my view most inexpensive guitars need minimum two things to be playable and usable....new tuners,new nut.I personally would go crazy on the mods like...new frets(evo or stainless steel),new electronics etc etc etc..the works but does it really need all those things?I would say no but if you go that distance it would be superior to a "real" fender. The important thing is that apart from an excellent inexpensive axe that many people can enjoy out of the box, this thing is basically a modders wet dream...someone can pay for a players strat for example and give four times the price of that but a modder can get this one change key parts and have a far superior end result guitar for still less....from any angle you look at it these guitars are a great buy.If i wanted the best of that guitar but without any serious mods and extra spending i would just dress the frets(which they probably need at this price point) dial in the nut ,deck the ceramic pickups low and set it up with new strings and play it stock for at least a couple of months or years....whatever route you chose this guitar is surely a net positive purchase.

I've had mine (a lefty) for a couple of years now... really? That long? Where's the time gone? It came perfectly setup. Didnt tweak a thing. The neck is super comfortable and fast. The pickups may lack some character but they convey the zing of the string really well. I don't feel the need to replace them. The floating 2 point trem and bone nut are great. Tuning stability is excellent. The only thing I plan to do is swap the pots out for proper lefty ones. The price is remarkable for the feel, fit and finish.

Got a brand new one of these and I have set up the intonation myself as it was slightly off. Easily done. Took less than ten minutes once I had changed the strings to my prefered brand and thickness, (D'addario 9.5-44). After the initial stretch in, tuning was solid and stayed that way. I had no issues with the tuners, and as the general practice, (at least as a technician), it to tune down before tuning up, I see no issues if they loosened off anyway. Worse case scenario, I could upgrade them. Pickups are surprisingly clear and precise for this price point too. I have a contemporary strat and the singles coils sound better than the Squier, albeit a bit more bell like. Cannot believe the price point for this guitar. It's basic but it is supremely giggable. Change the strings though.
@BudgetPedalChap

Yeah, couldn't agree more. Little bit of tlc and it's well and away. I did end up gigging this one, just after the video dropped, and it held up fine. I had to tune up between songs a bit more than my usual but they were the original strings. Great price point, solid guitar.

@jeffrowlette ah, I get ya. If that were the case, all microphones would give the same frequency response as they work on very similar principles. In my experience, pickups of different magnet types tend to have specific characteristics, but again not the only thing in the makeup of a pickup that alters the tone. I will agree that just because a pickup is made of a certain type of magnet, it doesn't make it good or bad. There are some fantastic ceramic magnet pickups, much like there are some really cheap sounding AlNiCo magnet pickups. Have a look at the Harley Benton reviews I've got for an example of pickups with magnets that are AlNiCo V, but sound a bit flat.
