I thought this was the first and last ever PADI dive course I would teach. Moral of the story : make sure your briefing, signals and what you do underwater stay consistent! I thought they were going to die, I was so panicked.

Quick thinking with the line! What a scary situation, glad they thought better of doing 70 - you must've been so confused when they kept going 🤣

And I didn't want to panic them with my jingle / or had forgotten my jingle, so I don't think I had a way to alert them To come back. I have genuinely never been so afraid. I mean, I do think worst case they would have surfaced, but I do feel I would have felt as if I failed teaching properly.

@@OceanPancake I think you handled it as well as you possibly could and most importantly you took a lesson out of it which people often forget to do :)

@@pseud420 that's the lesson! And hopefully sharing it here can help new instructors too

Wow that must have been nervewracking to wait. Thank you for sharing. Communication is really hard, especially when it’s something unusual. Really good idea with the line 👏🏻 I lost one of my students too, 3 people, 4m visibility the Kompass guy took of, the other couldn’t follow and to choose who you will leave alone is a hard one. Gladly he was caught by the instructor. People can get really fast when they are fixated on something.

I'd like to hear more about the downcurrent and entanglement situations. You have a great way of telling situations.

Very scary. Tough to know what your students would do so it would be hard to leave 4 students to look for the other two and potentially lose all of them. Glad to hear it worked out

Exactly. So I put the line down and pretended it was all part of the plan!

10 years experience certainly does a lot. But that was very scary haha! You can see I haven't forgotten it

The fun thing other instructors told me was that students mirror your actions. Even if your actions are wrong. So on my fist course, I did a briefing, repeated the summary of the briefing in the water and they confirm that they understand it. And when it was time to practice the skill, they just forgot. So I help them remember by doing the skill partially that we practised on the surface and the previous dive. So they end up doing it also partially... 🤣I had to repeat the skill again using even more time. Lesson for me, just do the whole skill and don't try to take a shortcut.

Dear, you cannot cover all the things that could go wrong! So don't worry. Good job talking on that even thou after so many ears. That wasn't a day with a lesson for them, but a lesson for you and you understand that now.

I discover diving in my last trip to thailand. One day to try, second , third and fourth days for the open waters licence and then I didn't stop. Is like a drug.

I was Separated and Lost during one of my OW Dives. There was only 2-3 Ft Vis. I ended up on the other side of the Training Area. On the 30 Ft deep platform. Instead of the 20. I had to do an Unsupervised Ascent. Once I got my bearings, I surface swam back to where I was supposed to be. Waited. Talked to people on the dock. I met the Instructor on my way down. He made me do the CESA twice. As he didn't like the way I did it. No "AAHH" sound. He didn't know what happened to me until I told him. Was I scared? No. Remembered my Training. And the Woman who Inspired me to get Certified.

I love your perception of "really really bad visibility" ^_^ Lake diving can sometime be as bad as 50cm or less visibility, buoyancy, navigation, temperature, the difficulties really increase a lot. On the other side you often have none or a slight current. When I go back diving to the red sea I just write infinite visibility in my log book haha. Just imagine having to do a controlled ascend in theses conditions. I promise if you haven't trained it there is no way to do a controlled ascent. What's your limit about visibility when you teach ? I mean I've seen instructors teaching in 1-2m visibility but often they have an assitant to be sure there is someone around the students at any moment.
@OceanPancake
@OceanPancake Месяц назад
Its all up to an instructors descretion. The visibility this day was around 5m (I have certainly been lucky that I have never had to teach in 1-2m visibility) to be honest, I have refused to take a diving job in areas where viz gets that bad. Personally I have been lucky enough to make decisions to only dive in better visibility, and work in areas where on average its 10m. I would certainly always recommend having a dive master for extra precaution, I have myself dived in 1m visibility and definitely would hate to teach in it!
