To this day it amazes me just how much Tim Burton stacked this cast.

Yes Nicholson played 2 characters. Story has it that the studios were upset that his president character died in the movie, so Burton wrote him a second character, just to ceremoniously kill him off again to spite the studio.😂

One of these days I'll work out why, generally, no one in the US liked this at the time, here in the UK it absolutely landed, perhaps the humour was maybe too British, even though it was a US production. It's an utter blast to watch and I love it dearly.

It was the timing of the release of the movie. Independence Day had just came out a month or two earlier and was the biggest hit movie of the year. Everyone was expecting the same kind of over the top summer blockbuster type of movie instead of a Tim Burton type of movie.

A few fun facts: Jack Nicholson accepted the role without reading the script because he had such a good time working with Tim Burton on Batman. Also [SPOILER WARNING] Tim Burton was repeatedly instructed that he couldn't kill off Jack Nicholson's character in a movie so he decided to cast him in 2 roles in this film and kill him off in both.

The Mar Attacks trading cards from the 60s were infamous for their violent content. They depicted various people and animals being dispatched in gruesome ways by Martian invaders. Parents were outraged. Which only made the cards cooler to kids. Last time I checked, complete sets went for hundreds of dollars. Probably a lot more now. The movie caused a resergence of popularity and Topps published a number of Mars Attacks comics.

This movie traumatized me as a kid, the design of the aliens was the scariest thing I'd ever seen. The comedy went over my head, i was too young to get it. The very first Tim Burton movie I watched as a kid. Lost the count of how many times I watched on my VCR with my mother. She didn't liked as much as I did at the time, but she still enjoys to watch with me once in a while. Also Mars attacks was a series of trading cards from the 60s; so most of the scenes and jokes and visuals were based on these cards

Okay, so this is a Tim Burton movie. In Batman Returns, there are some in-jokes to Edward Scissorhands - *SPOILER ALERT* - The Penguin is the perceived version of Edward Scissorhands. - The last two nights out are inspired by Edward Scissorhands, with Edward playing the villain, and Jim playing Batman, including getting demonised innocently. The Ice Princess = Kim. Danny's van being driven recklessly = The Batmobile being driven recklessly. The Inventor's Mansion = Arctic World in the finale of both. So, I think Mars Attacks has some in-jokes!: *SPOILER ALERT FOR BATMAN, EDWARD SCISSORHANDS, AND BATMAN RETURNS* - The grandma actress played a case worker in Beetlejuice i.e. a case worker for alien entities. - Jack Nicholson played The Joker and wipes the television camera screen with his hand in Batman, so that he can appear i.e. The Martians (the villains) wipe the television camera screen so that they can appear. - The Esmeralda actress from Edward Scissorhands is here i.e. the person who warns others to expel the alien-type entity - The Martians replacing Edward here. - Danny DeVito played The Penguin i.e. the way The Martians are defeated is with a sound frequency, this being the same way Batman defeated The Penguin by sending the penguins armed with bombs back to Arctic World. - Sarah Jessica Parker played Dolores Fuller in Ed Wood, the girlfriend of Ed Wood, and here, she again plays a girlfriend (I've never seen this film, by the way).

Rod Steiger! He plays the war-mongering general. In my opinion, one of the funniest characters in this movie. "Annihilate, Kill, kill, kill". Jack Nicholson surely knew what talent he was playing against. Steiger was a Hollywood legend, one of the first method-actors along with Marlon Brando. Steiger had a long career but he struggled with bipolar disorder and had long periods where he was too sick to work, so his career never reached the height it should have. I am glad Tim Burton cast him in this role. A great actor with a big heart and a great sence of humor, even though he mostly played heavy, serious roles. Check out the 1970 film "Waterloo" where Steiger plays Napoleon, and frickin' owns every scene he's in.

18:57 you're kinda right. For whatever reason, they thought the dove was an attack, but my favorite part of that, is they also took it as a sign earth was not surrendering peacefully. They thought earth knew it was an invasion and wanted to surrender peacefully, and "we come in peace" actually meant they come in peace, as long as earth doesn't fight back. Of course, it was all a lie anyway

The hotel collapsed by the Martians in Las Vegas was a real casino, called The Landmark. Tim Burton filmed the demolition of the hotel and used it in the film. Also, the junkyard of old Neon signs is a real place. It's part of The Neon Museum, and it's a popular tourist attraction in Vegas.

For the LONGEST time afterwards, we would "Ack, Ack...Ack-Ack-Ack!" at each other, whole 'conversations'. Lots of fun. My daughter was already a big Tim Burton fan. When we went on road trips our van had built in TV and VHS and this was a staple. We were always watching it. I remember watching this at like 4-5 years old, laughing my twisted little butt off.🤣🤣🤣 Signs though... that movie gave me nightmares for 2 weeks straight. My family still references this movie, randomly talking like the aliens, ack ack ack, or singing the song that kills them, singing the one the guy on stage is performing. All of those things still go around during family reunions. Then again I also grew up watching Tim Burton.

I've heard that much of this movie is based on a weird line of those collector cards you buy in blind packages that usually also contains a stick of gum. Both the title and a lot of the visuals comes directly from that. Like the burning cows in the beginning. And I don't think those collector cards were based on anything in particular more than the whole trend of invasion Media at the time. Kind of weird inspiration and you end up with a weird movie. 😅

I really did think it was the dove that set them off, but then seeing how much fun they were having in destroying them all, it made me think they just wanted any reason at all to go ape. When I first saw this it was with my sisters, it scared the crap out of them but I had a ball. It was so over-the-top and unexpected from anything involving aliens that I'd ever seen I just kept watching whenever it came on. I liked the vibe, the design of the aliens. I think Burton was channeling “the worst director of all time” when he made this film, that real life director is Ed Wood; his films are known as the worst ever made, but in that they have their own charm. With that said two things, you should watch probably his worst film Plan 9 From Outer Space and then watch Tim Burton’s biographical movie about Ed Wood entitled simply, Ed Wood, (Starring of course one Mr. Johnny Depp.) it’s also a behind the scenes look into him making his films and the “stars” that were in them, including the making of the aforementioned Plan 9 film. On Nicholson, I hope you watch One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest someday!

To answer the question you pose towards the end, this movie came out when I was in my 30's, so I knew exactly what they were going for when they made it. It is both an homage AND a parody of 50's-60's low-budget sci-fi flicks. Also reminiscent of the 50's-60's "all-star cast" comedy movies such as "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World." So it was a huge throwback for this kid who watched a lot of those lame sci-fi flicks as a kid on TV. I thought it was perfectly insipid. And who doesn't love grandma?

You've probably already know this by now but the female bus driver was Pam Grier. Her brother Rosey Grier played in the NFL. Slim Whitman FTW!!

“Do the martians have two sexes like we do?” Credited as ‘Female Journalist’ played by Coco Leigh who for whatever reason is dressed as a man and has her audio down-pitched. Because funny..? It’s a weird movie. Just go with it.

I LOVE this movie - it is so madly crazy, lots of famous actors and really shows it loves to the 1950s tradingcards that it is based on. ANYONE thinking it is a deep and serious film is sadly misstaken. It is the SF version of Beetlejuice. It is just a fun flick no need to think just watch and enjoy

I'm new subscriber love your reaveiws! Yes Tim Burton works with the same people in most of his movies! I've worked on many of Tim Burton's and Johnny Depp movies! I do practical effects and Tim Burton's one of the best to work for! And Mars attacks was a comic book back in the fifties! And would love you to do Tim Burton's movie Ed Wood and Big fish!

In the theater 😂😂😂 I thought Tim Burton was genius in how some of the atmosphere was creepy but yet goofy. All-star cast and just not taking it serious. I was 16 at the time. I also have it on DVD. The trading cards are scary to me 😂 some of them. The infiltrator (woman with big hair) was scary and fave part🎉🎉🎉

Thor, I disagree with your assessment that this movie is more of a satire than a parody, but I can see where you're coming from - It's designed as a parody of old, science fiction, B movies from the 50's and before that time. I heard it's a homage to Ed Wood because Tim Burton did a biopic of him before this movie. Personally, I think this film is very good - The different factions with their character units, the cheesy special effects and designs, the simplicity of the characters, the simplicity of the villains' evil, the rousing, majestic triumphant feeling of victory by the heroic characters, is all cut from sci-fi B movie cloth, and lovingly parodied with amusing humour. The sheer, over the top evil of the Martians satirises the simple, uncomplicated, emotionally dramatic, and massively powerful threat of overwhelming alien threats from sci-fi B films in a hilariously, darkly subversive and twisted way. The movie also becomes a fun game of seeing who will live and die. The Martians in this film are actually one of the most memorable villains of all time to me, as I've never someone/people go to such a huge and widespread extent for a mission, simply due to being sadistic jerks. The reason I wouldn't call the movie great is because, I just think it could distinctly be a bit funnier - Certainly not an all-out laugh riot as it's not intending to be that, but just a bit funnier. I think it could've been more comedic and had more laughs. Perhaps, some brief Martian subtitles here and there could've added some comedic gems at various points. I could easily see 'Martian profanities!' being written when the Martian operating the giant machine is passionately and angrily chasing the ultimately heroic boy down the street, and 'Sheer, overwhelming, undoubtable laughter' written when The Martians intercept the message from the government about the apparent dove misunderstanding.

Yea that’s Jack Nicholson. Funny story. Jacks people told the director that he would do the movie but that they couldn’t kill Jack. So Tim Burton killed him twice.

I know I'm a bit late, maybe you see this or maybe you don't. This movie is a satirical parody of George Orwell's book "War of the Worlds"

I watched this as a little kid and of course I missed the started of the movie saying it was a movie, I got to the part were the aliens meet the humans and they just straight up shoot a dove THEN A HUMAN, I thought it was real for the longest time. I find it funny as something similar happened to people of the radio era.
