Before I fix the 402,000 mile 2003 Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG I thought it would awesome to bring it to the Mercedes dealership for a pre-purchase inspection. In this video, we take a look at everything the dealer found wrong with this super high mileage car and some things they missed. We tally it all up at the end to see what happens when you bring a 400k mile car to the dealer.
Links to parts are in the article below.
Thanks again iCars Chicago for letting me do whatever I want to this car you guys are awesome.

Many dealers take the mick. The turbo actuator link pin broke on my ford transit. I removed the broken pin at the side of the road with a pair of pliers, and made a temporary repair using a split pin and a few small washers. I called into fords parts department, the assistant couldnt find the part on his computer, so I showed him where it came from on my van. He got his manager to have a look. I was told by the manager the part was not ment to be removable, and that it came with the actuator, and that the actuator came with the turbo and manifold, and that the parts without labour would cost £1200. I declined to be shafted, and let the temp road side repair do its job perfectly for another 7 years before selling the van. Manufacturers dont want you to repair your vehicle, its not in their financial interest.

I think the real moral is, get some wrenches and this $10,000 of problems is really about $1000-1250 in top quality parts and DIY. This is not brain surgery. A good car like this deserves a parts budget and some attention.

Goes also for painters.. if you ask 10 painters for advice on how to paint your car, you'll get 10 different answers. As a dealer mechanic I just laugh at this guy with his t-shirt and trusty little light. We get enough of these independent workshop dudes bringing the customer cars in for repair after they've made them even worse. If this guy spends a day finding faults in this crappy little car compared to a dealer mechanic taking 30-45 minutes, do somebody really think this is a fair comparison?

Nice vid...most dealerships are money leaches because they know they can be. My mechanic backed me up for a refund from a dealership due to their shoddy work and exorbitant pricing. They misdiagnosed my car three times leaving me stranded and pissed and they were trying to tell me a bunch of crap that my mechanic proved them to be lying. They caved and I rec'd a check for $700plus...I still wrote a bad review on their web page comments.

Mercedes of westmont illinois told me my ML needed a engine tare down to fix a misfire in cylinder 6 that would cost over $6000 so i had a nice laugh, went to auto zone and bought a few spark plugs, did the work myself (35 min) and no more misfire lmfao. If ur car has over 100k on it they simply dont want to work on it and will lie to get u to refuse repair. Another time the service manager shook his head at me and said to remove the step boards and replace windshield wipers would be "alot of work". Stay out of the dealer if ur warranty is expired

Hammer Smith Anyone's a fool to use advance/autozone parts on a foreign car. I've been runnin Volkswagens for over 20 years and those parts always give problems. Pay a few bucks more and get decent oem spec parts. And if you have a foreign car parts store near you I'd check em out. A set of rotors and pads for a Jetta was 189 online , shipping takes 3 days. My local guys had em at 205 and had them by lunchtime. I shit 20$ when I take a dump, so it was a no brainer to go local in that situation.

@SilverStarHeggisist
@SilverStarHeggisist 7 лет назад
LegitStreetCars the shop I work at charges like $50 bucks to do the same inspection and I'm given most of the pre purchase inspections because I'm thorough. When I'm done you'd know about every scratch under the car. I once had a dealer sales person assure me that there would be nothing wrong with the car, and I told him, "it's your job to say that, it's mine to prove you wrong"
@SDav21
@SDav21 7 лет назад
Michael Macia I worry about these American dealerships. I've seen several videos and comments from people in America and they always seem to have an issue with German cars that people elsewhere in the world don't. On one channel, the dealership put the wrong fluid in the diff of a C63. That's worrying. In Europe and in some countries in Africa, German cars are used as taxis and emergency vehicles because they are reliable and dependable. What happens in America? Are the technicians properly trained?
@fcman123
@fcman123 7 лет назад
Ninja Master but the point of a ppi is for them to find everything wrong with the car, so you can make an informed decision on whether or not to buy it. They should be happy to find tons of things wrong with it, makes it easier for the dealer to sell you one of their own cars instead of the one you brought in
@TrevHenny

If you can't afford to drive a Mercedes, let alone an AMG model, stay away from them and buy a bedroom poster. What did you expect? The car has done 400k miles - its Fkd if its been driven like an AMG should be. The dealership HAS to go over the car from front to back and give you EVERYTHING that needs changing. Its a matter of principle and quality. Your argument would be the same if somebody brought you a wrecked car and asked you to fix it. You go over the whole thing and give them a complete list - you wouldn't do it "on the cheap" because you have a reputation and standards to keep up to. 400k - the car should be scrapped.

I agree, good video, showed how good condition the car is in for the mileage, Mercedes quality. Missing is the condition of the engine and drivetrain, important at this mileage. Team33, this car did not look ready for the scrap, I see lot of life and fun with this car down the road as long as you have cash in the bank, helps to stay away from the stealaship. I've been there.

Respect, great video, lots of useful information. Here in Germany when you take a car to the dealer for inspection a guy to whom you have been assigned to does all the paperwork and checks your car. Checks front (for chip cracks, wipers ect), back, sides, and underneath and you can be there with him and see what he is looking at and understand his explanations if something needs to be fixed. So he does a general inspection and you leave you car for a more detail inspection. I don't know do they take the panel for the bottom. Tomorrow the car is finished.

There are hardly any parts listed on this pamphlet. I would understand that it is work + parts as $90 for cabin air filter is very expensive. Additionally lot of rows there are listed as service which would consider activity and parts. Lots of the parts will be expensive as they would be sourced from dealership and definitely work could be done cheaper in independent garage. Great video!

I learned the hard way not to ask a dealer for an inspection. Brought my E46 M3 to our local BMW dealer and they came up with almost $11,000 in repair costs!! $4,000 just for some suspension parts that were FINE. Ended up fixing everything that was truly bad with a private shop for $500. The other "bad" parts can be replaced at home (if you know what you're doing) for not even 5% of what they were asking. They really just look for ways to make money when dealing with a customer who doesn't understand cars. Lesson learned, do your own repairs or trust your mechanic.

To clear things up, about 90% if not more of the cost was for labor. Now I may not be the best mechanic in the world but I'm certified in many repair categories and I'm capable of doing these repairs on my own now that I have the correct tools. I took my car to the dealership because I had no time or equipment and the car was fairly new to the garage. So Mr. "H2BpullsK20" think before you leave a comment. It didn't make much sense.

I'm a car dealer. A lot of people take their vehicles to the dealer for their Presale inspection. Can't tell you how many deals I lost because dealers give them a laundry list. I once had a lady come back in a Mercedes and the estimate for repairs was more than I was selling the car for! I tell people take the car any mechanic just not the dealer or you're wasting everybody's time
@SilverStarHeggisist

Brisdad53 um I don't know where you are but the small shops where I live including the one I work at can work on cars fresh off the factory floor. We even have a Toyota dealer bring us Toyotas to work on when they get backed up.
@sales8026

ekim andersom They are used cars. All our vehicles are run through our service department for a mechanical and safety inspection. The problem with the dealership is they will tell you you need to replace a part even if there's just the slightest bit of wear. The bottom line is people have unrealistic expectations of what a used car should be. I will have customers that walk around the entire vehicle in touch every little scratch and ask if I'm going to paint it. It is USED you want a car with zero problems in perfect condition go buy a NEW one!

Regarding UK prices. About 2 months ago I was looking at buying a 12yo SLK. Wary of what maintenance on a Mercedes might cost I had a good look before committing and was amazed at how painless it would be, not at all expensive. I was only put off by the inability to fit a tow bar. On the odd occasion I need to carry more than a few bags of shopping the ability to attach a small box trailer would have been necessary, while the rest of the time I could have had a small car that was FUN. And it was beautiful :( It would be interesting to know why prices in Europe and the USA are so different?

That's why you don't go to a dealership. If you click the link in the description, he found all the parts for about 1300$. Add another 1000$ for labor and you're at 2300$. That extra 6000$ is basically a "dealership fee".

Great video (first of yours I've watched) One big thing missing: What are the street prices of the replacement parts? I'm rejuvenating an '83 Mercedes with my son, and love showing him the hard numbers of DIY vs handing a dealership your credit card. Learning basic mechanical skills is a more exciting for him when he can see the 4 hours of R&R a worn out part sometimes saves several hundreds of dollars. I'd love to see each recommended repair with the raw costs of the parts needed.

Suspension was jimmy. Flushes were the service writer. Seriously though, been in the business a long time. Sad to see the stuff they missed. Especially those brakes. Yikes!! You're right about that car having no business at the dealer unless it was a sentimental vehicle. I could see someone spending that kind of money on a car that was their dads/moms that passed. Especially if they don't know anything about cars.

Honesty is #1 when it comes to repairs and You show how you should treat all your customers. You're absolutely right, find a mechanic you can trust. Dealership service dept are there to make the difference in loss of profit from the point of sale and make it up on the back end in parts and service. My buddy who owns Graybeal Auto in Shorewood, has been working on cars for over 20 years and building race cars for nearly 15 years. He NEVER does any work on anyone's car without showing them Exactly what's wrong and explaining what is involved. He let's you know what Has to be replaced and what can wait if it's gonna be too much for you all at once. Also, like You, he Never charges to inspect and let you know IF you actually need repairs done there or if it's a simple fix you can do at home.

@philipsgarage3286
@philipsgarage3286 5 лет назад
Wendy Aanenson a car is usually put into limp mode when a module senses data that is out of spec... it thinks damage could be done to the engine, transmission or emissions system. If you can, gather (or have someone gather) your PIDS (data from the ECM/ECU) and study them. Do an inspection starting with the basics, what previous history was performed? When was my last oil change? How are my fluids etc. some newer cars can be put into limp mode for bad quality oil. I had a Subaru come in the shop (during break in period after an engine build) which needed an oil flush because of break in “debris” was floating around the lubrication system; this car was in a “limp mode.” If you can, check the fluids yourself, or find a trusty mechanic. Good luck 👍🏻🍀
