I took a Lanshan onto a Mountain

In all honesty, this was the scariest and most dangerous moment in my life. A terrifying experience as my Lanshan 2 tent is destroyed on a mountain by high winds.

After lockdown was officially lifted here in Scotland I was excited to get back into the mountains and enjoy some winter wild camping in my new ultralight backpacking tent - the 3F UL Gear Lanshan 2.
I packed my camping gear and my camera equipment and caught the early ferry over to the Isle of Arran with Coops the dog, the forecasts were looking great and we enjoyed an amazing hike up through North Glen Sannox and onto Caisteal Abhail where we would be pitching the tent and spend the night. As we gained altitude, it became clear that the mountain was still in winter condition, with deep snow lining the corries.
Once on the main ridge the subzero winds became very strong, gusting at around 30-40mph with a chill factor of approx -7 degrees centigrade. Reaching the summit, I could hardly walk and I was having issues with the lanshan before disaster struck and I was forced to make a decision; escape off the hill or try and find shelter in which to camp safely in the storm?
Note; whilst the lanshan may not have been a 4 season tent, the rest of my equipment was suited to the dangerous environment / conditions. My mountain safety skills were definitely tested and I'm happy to report that they kept me safe, meaning that I didn't have to make a call to mountain rescue!
Please consider your own skills before setting out into the mountains & ensure you are prepared for any situation!

Have you ever had an experience like mine? If so, what action(s) did you take to get yourself to safety?
@scottmcdiarmid8196

not been but a light goretex bivvy bag could have been a backup, even inside your ripped tent. Also some tenatious tape might have allowed a temporary fix for you too, inside and out

@@scottmcdiarmid8196 Hi mate, you’re right! A lot of people suggested tape and I’ve now taken to having a wrap on each of my trekking poles ICE. I’ve since moved onto (and tested) a much more capable shelter (Hexpeak) and I’m happy to report that it hasn’t let me down, even in the worst of weathers 😁

Never had a tent fail on me like that however I do carry a needle and tough thread so I think I would have lost some elevation, as you did, and tried to sew up the tear. May not have held or been waterproof but some stiches with some tape on top may have kept it together for one night. I love my Lanshan 2 Pro but if was heading up the tops I wouldn't take a lightweight tent, I'm saving up for a Hilleberg ;)

Had 2 fails: 1) 3 season Wild Country Mistrel flattened in 80mph forcast winds, Cairngorms. The side was being pushed down, tried to get to sleep on my tummy with my feet sticking up to keep the side up, something was wrong in my porch so opened the inner to have a look; the door had been opened , contents blown away, while trying to sort it, the side got flattend. Used my rucksack to take the weight of me and went to sleep till morning. Wild Country said nothing can survive these winds , washed their hands of it so bought hillebergs from then on starting with the Tarra, their strongest 2 man tent which Hilleberg recon can survive anything on the planet. 2) Hillebrg Akto ripped out of ground in 90mph forcast winds, pentland hills. The tent was being hit from front and side, couldnt sit up as got battered hard by pole on head when gusts hit. Corner went down due to peg comming out. Got out fixed peg, but when I opened door to get back in, a gust shot into the tent ,riiped it out of the ground into the air. Grabbed a guyline, got dragged along the ground till gust died. STuffed tent with sleeping bag inside into survival bag and evaced. Only damage was slightly bent pole which Hilleberg replaced free of charge. Currently, for 4 season use have a Hillebrg Akto , but for the worst weather , I have a Hilleberg Soulo BL.

Hi Wendy, thanks for commenting! Caisteal Abhail isn’t too difficult a walk in itself, the longest part is the walk out of Glen Rosa (necessary because I didn’t want to be held to bus times etc). Were I to have returned the same way I’d access the hill, it would have been a much quicker route 😀

Good that you stuck it out (not so good for the tent) and well done for showing that a call to Mountain Rescue is sometimes and option, we're actually so lucky to have such a service. Keep up the good work mate and hopefully see you on a hill sometime 👍🏼

Hi mate, thanks for watching 😀 I did replace the tent, but I’ve lost all faith in it now to be honest. 99% of my trips are summits, so I need something that’s not going to make me second guess myself. I’ve still got the OEX Phoxx 2, which is bombproof, but the whole point in the Lanshan was to reduce weight and increase the space. Interestingly, I returned to this very spot recently with the replacement Lanshan and all was well. Midges were hellish though! 😂

Great scenery and a great adventure, thanks for sharing. I love your dog:) I also love your attitude - your tent getting ripped was just one thing that happened, and it didn't stop you enjoying the other good stuff. I like the shape and living space of my Lanshan 2. It can certainly keep me dry in an all-night downpour, but I've only used it in forests with trees blocking the wind. I've tested the fabric. It's fairly puncture-resistant, but once it gets a puncture / tear, the tear spreads quite easily along one direction of the weave, and extremely easily along the other. My Lanshan 2 *pro* has significantly more tear resistance and it's survived very strong winds in an exposed location, but even then, I'd expect it to disintegrate well before something like an Akto does.

Subbed just on the basis of this footage. Bad situation turned into good ending because ultimately you kept your head and your navigation skills didn’t let you down. Not everyone would’ve coped with it. Needless to say that the ice-age did an amazing job creating the scenery. Reminds me of my time on the Isle of Harris. Not certain that the Lanshan would’ve been my first choice of tent for such a location though. It’s a great tent, but personally I’d not want to use it for such exposed locations. Ps. The comment about your choice of tent isn’t a criticism, just an observation from my own use of it.

Hated the "Chinese tents are rubbish" remarks that inevitably popped up and knew that if you would of tensioned that part of the tent it would of held up to the battering. Glad you made it down pal and I'm definitely subbing because I like to see the extremes you can take the "budget end of the market" tents.

Hi Matthew, thanks for watching & welcome to the channel :) There's definitely an air of gear snobbery (just check the rest of the comments on this video!) & I've even found threads on camping forums that have referenced this video that state the lanshans are terrible. You're 100% about the tensioning & it's a point I've made over & over again in defence of this video. At the end of the day, the forecast was off & I just had to deal with it. I've replaced the Lanshan & will continue to use it where sensible. I had a dodgy time right on the other side of Cir Mhor to you in 2016. Plan was GF-CM-BT-CA and down to Lochranza to the hostel but I got disorientated on the way up Cir Mhor with the thick clag and went in circles 3 times. At this stage panic had fully set in and my legs were cramping up. By some miracle I had managed to skirt around the south side of the mountain and just took a random glen to descent into - for all I knew it could have been Rosa, Sannox or Iorsa. Again by some miracle I could identify it as Rosa and I sprinted a 10 minute mile with all my gear on back to the last ferry home. In hindsight I was far too late in the day to have made it round anyway and I was unware of the dodgy-ness of the A'Chir ridge at the time too. Glad you both got back safe and sound!
@outlawedlandscapes
@outlawedlandscapes 3 года назад
Ooft, that sounds like a tricky one, even in clear conditions the snow made Cir Mhor difficult to navigate. I ended up making my own way up through the crags before finding what seemed to be the path on the way down. Plenty of sidewards walking there, so I can only imagine what it would be like in the clag!

TBH, Lanshans don’t look that strong. A good valley tent, maybe. At least the winds meant no midges. Arran’s can be epic. Many years ago, Cir Mhor gave me a learning experience. Zinging noises from the metal frame of my rucksack. But only if I stood right on the tipmost rock, which appeared in your video. @outlawedlandscapes 2 года назад
Hi Mate, thanks for watching! I’m not sure if there was a prior weakness around the seam or not, so I can’t say 100% - but, given the size of the main panels and the strength of the wind whilst I was trying to pitch with 2 poles, it certainly doesn’t help. I didn’t have very much experience with the tent prior to this camp and thus didn’t know it’s limitations. I will say though, that I believe a Lanshan 1 would have fared better, given that it’s a single pole pitch and has better aerodynamics. I’m really not a fan of how lightweight the flysheet material is (on the standard Lanshan 2). I’ve just released a bad weather test of the Lanshan 2 versus my Hexpeak - that’ll give you a better idea of how the tent performs in general bad weather 🙂

It is a pleasure to see your dog jumping around so actively. 🙂Mine is half the size and now twelve and a half years old, so things go a little slower. Nevertheless, last summer we have been hiking 180 km (and 11,000 meters up and down) in the Polish / Czech "Giant Mountains", that's mostly about the same altitude (only the top peak is 1.400 m). There is nothing better than hiking with a good dog! Is your LanShan the new single-wall edition from 2021? Allegedly the material of the "update version" is stronger. I also have this tent and have been very satisfied so far (condensation on the inside is of course a negative aspect due to the single-wall construction and that was already clear to me before the purchase; but you can live with it) - but I haven't had such weather conditions yet. No idea if I could have been able to repair the crack. Since I just bought a roll of spare guy line, I still have the full 20 m with me. With that you might have strengthened the stability of the tent and with the somehow knotted extra footprint you might have gotten it a bit more rainproof again ... But afterwards you are always smarter and an old wisdom from the coast says: "The best captains stand around on land !" 🤣 Do you already have a new tent? Perhaps you should try this variant from ASTA GEAR: tinyurl.com/yckucxa2 Note the triangular panels (with the triangular cut of the fabric it just looks like the seams are following the lines of force - anyhow, the panels are smaller) and the additional anchoring points in the surfaces. And it is more versatile to set up. The tent is just as big and only slightly heavier than the LanShan. The HILLEBERG Anaris (tinyurl.com/2p8t4bv5) is much heavier at 1.4 kg and at € 700 it is too expensive for me for this purpose. "Expensive" is relative at HILLEBERG: I've been using my Staika (tinyurl.com/2p93f7jv) intensively for over 15 years and I could rely on it every single night in any weather condition. Now the fabric is so worn out, I don't think that it could have withstood your storm - already too decrepit. So I replaced it with 2 new tents: a tunnel tent for paddling (the weight is relatively irrelevant) and the LanShan for hiking. After seeing your video, I'm almost annoyed that I didn't take the ASTA GEAR TingYu as I wanted first ... but then I let myself be carried away by the hype about the LanShan ...
@outlawedlandscapes
@outlawedlandscapes 2 года назад
Wow, thank you for this big comment! You're right, being on the hills just wouldn't be same without seeing Coops enjoying himself, it's a fantastic way to connect :) I love that quote and know exactly what you mean, at the time I didn't have any extra guy rope to help support it, but thankfully the wind was negligible in the lee of the hill. This particular Lanshan was just the standard Lanshan 2 & you're right, the 2 pro does *supposedly* have rip stop fabric. I managed to get the broken tent replaced at no extra cost, so that's good, but this leads me onto your 3rd paragraph; After this trip, I totally lost faith in the Lanshan, I returned to the same mountain, with the same (replacement) tent and while the weather was perfect, I just wasn't comfortable with it, which led me to getting a different tent; the Luxe Hexpeak V4A - so you weren't far off with your recommendation of the ASTA shelter! I was kind of the same with the hype around the Lanshan, everyone seemed to have one, but I learned that lesson :D If you look at my channel, you'll see a video called 'Camping Chaos' - check that out and see just how the Hexpeak performs in super strong winds ;) Thanks again for your comment!

I had a look at the little tunnel tent, the "Lightwave 2", but I don't like it, mainly because of the lack of an absis, but also because of the weight (1860 g), in terms of weight and design that is not an essential difference to the "ROBENS Kite" that I already happily own. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EcI4fDNgMCo.html With the "Sil Hexpeak V4a" you are now 50% heavier than the "LanShan." But I think that doesn't matter to you, especially because of the now storm-tested security of the "Hexpeak". Florian Homeier, the owner of Luxe Outdoor (He apparently runs the company alone and - if you consider the low price - certainly has it sewn in the Far East. Therefore, the widely praised quality of the tents is all the more astonishing.) can be seen in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9ORd7lUayyI.html He explains some basic facts and the quickest way to pitch the tent. The video is in German, even the automatically generated German subtitles are bad, so you don't even need to try the English translation ... Hence my translation here: "Hello, I'll show you now how you can easily set up a Hexpeak V4 (the same applies to the F6). But first some theory: I sketched this nice picture for you ... in truth it is a regular hexagon and you can see here that I can divide it into six triangles and these triangles are equilateral triangles, that is, the side lengths are all three equal. From this I can also see that the distance from one peg to the opposite peg is twice the base length. And I can take advantage of this relationship when I put up the tent. I'll show you now how to do it. The only thing you have to pay attention to is that the straps at the bottom to which the pegs are attached are all about the same length, and that should be relatively short all about I now say 5-6 cm, maybe 7 cm. It should be about the same, otherwise the whole thing won't work. So, this is the cover strip of the entrance, you can always find it easily and down here is the strain relief hook for the zipper. It is originally there so that the traction that is on the fabric doesn't have to be carried by the zipper alone, especially down here if you want to open or close it. I open it now and hang the ring to the right of it in this hook, instead like this. And now I'll start with the peg to the left of this strain relief hook. I have six pegs here, like this. You can now see how fast it can be done: This is peg #1, here I have the hook, the ring right next to it: 2. peg. So, then I open this strain relief hook, I can put it back into the right ring right away ... it now balances itself pretty easily by just pulling roughly the same amount of force. Peg #3, peg #4. The same thing on the opposite side: pulling roughly the same force, balancing a bit, putting down ... So, that's it. You can check it again if you look at it to see whether it looks even and the subtleties can be corrected very well afterwards with the line lock buckles provided for this purpose. Now a pole ... always make sure to put it in the reinforcement up there and not accidentally next to it. So, stands like a 1 and I would say it's pretty quick." I will continue using my "LanShan". If something extraordinary happens (positive or negative) I will let you know.

Hi mate, thanks very much for this! I'd actually seen the video you've very kindly translated and like you said, the translations are awful - I actually ended up making my own 'how to pitch the hex peak' video (on my channel) so it was easier for people to do it properly :) I know what you mean about the pyramid tents, it was very awkward at first for me but once I got used to the pitching process, it's very simple, the only thing that takes time is the sheer amount of pegs that have to be put in the ground, haha! Regarding the Lanshan, I actually went out earlier today with the Lanshan 2 and the Hexpeak for a test. We had strong winds with even stronger gusts and heavy rain, similar to those conditions found in this video. I wanted to see how each performed and the Hexpeak DID NOT MOVE. The Lanshan was flapping about like a paper bag... For that reason, I can deal with the extra weight. It's funny, because when you have peace of mind, you seem to forget about things like 'how much does it weigh' :D I really wanted to love the Lanshan 2, but after Arran, it just wasn't meant to be. Thanks again for taking the time to translate that for me :)
