David Carmichael took his 11-year-old son's life, after an adverse reaction to a common prescription medication. His story needs to be heard. Subscribe to 'My Big Story' » 7news.link/MyBigStory
David Carmichael and wife Beth loved their family life in Toronto, Canada, with eldest daughter Gillian, and young son Ian. David says his family was a middle-class family and everyone got along well.
Ian had very mild epilepsy, and was a December baby, which meant he was young for his class, and a late developer, but was an otherwise happy, healthy boy.
In 2003, David had a senior role working for a national Canadian fitness organisation. It was a job he loved - promoting fitness to ordinary Canadians. But in 2003, Health Canada cut funding to the program.
David was gutted.
His company needed $5 million dollars to stay afloat. But the government refused. He became distressed and anxious.
He went to his doctor, who diagnosed major depression, and said he should take an antidepressant called Paroxetine, sold then under the trade name of Paxil.
This was the turning point for David.
David says his doctor had never warned him of potential dangers of the drug.
He said he suffered severe, adverse reactions, He says he was soon in a state of psychosis. He started to think.. the unthinkable.
He truly believed that his 11-year-old son Ian was dangerous, and needed to stop living.
Watch David's story.
And listen to him carefully.
He has been through the worst nightmare - but wants to use his pain to help others.

been through the same extreme delusional thoughts when I came off Zoloft. thought people could read my mind and the apocalypse was coming. it's terrifying. takes some real courage to share this story because those who haven't been through similar will inevitably and understandably have doubts. but it really needs to be discussed because these medications are a huge risk to society.
@lc4life369
@lc4life369 2 года назад
I never experienced that but I was on Zoloft for awhile. Got pregnant and had to stop taking it. After getting off it and back to my normal self i realized how much the drug was effecting my thinking (suicide was the least of my worries) and how dangerous it was for me to be taking. I never want to put my child in any danger and I feel like that's exactly what would happen. I get pressured to take meds by doctors Everytime I go simply because i let them know about anxiety (wich the drug only made worse anyway) and I refuse. Eating healthy, exercise and talking to someone does so much more than that medication ever will. I did alot of dumb stuff because of that medication. It made me sooooo compulsive and sooooo angry. I think it might of made me manic too. Idk. But it's not safe, that's all I know.

@@lc4life369 Your comment is exactly what I went through way too many times. Yes, I have depression and yes I have anxiety. Never once did any of the medications lessen either but you're absolutely right. Once I stopped I realized how worse I was on them and now I refuse to ever try again. I guess they help millions but must be millions of us that they don't.

I've never been a proponent fo these types of drugs, but do know people who have had good results from them. This guy wasn't too bright when he decided to take himself off the drug without discussing it with his doctor. You should never do that with any drug. And then putting himself back on was really stupid. I feel sorry for the son, but I have problems with the way this guy dealt with his medication. Anytime anyone is prescribed a drug they should go online and research it. To put that much faith in a doctor is why we have so many people killed by doctors. They aren't gods. They're people and some of them are crappy at their jobs. It is your body, therefore you are the person in charge of it. Research everything a doctor tell you so you can make good decisions about what you will do with it. If this guy had taken that approach, he may have never taken Paxil, and this tragedy may have been avoided. Lord knows I've tried to warn this one gal I used to know. They kept giving her medication that had serious side effects. I tried to warn her and pointed her to several medical articles about the drugs she was taking but she wouldn't listen because I wasn't a doctor. I pointed out to her that I didn't write the articles, doctors did. But still she just too whatever the doctors prescribed her. Now she has issues because they mixed drugs that should have never been mixed according to the drug manufacturers, pharmacists, and doctors except the quaks she goes to.

Yes, I so agree with you! Thanks so much for sharing! The best thing people can do, is research their condition being treated, and the medications they’re prescribed! Be involved, be curious! Understanding these facts helps everyone . Even before I was a LPN, I wanted to know as much as I could about why I was taking a medication and what caused the symptoms! There’s no excuse now, to be uninformed, because of Google and the Internet. Educate yourself, communicate with doctors and don’t be your own doctor!🧡🙏

I was prescribed a medication to help me give up smoking. The side effects were horrendous. I sat in a chair for 6 days, severely depressed and suicidal. This is not who I usually am - a happy extravert with an outrageous sense of humour. I've never felt so low in my life even when in trauma. I knew it was the drug and I stopped taking it. Within 24 hours I was back to my normal self.

In fact all our behavior is brain chemistry. This is not a natural fact you think about if you come across to judge about serial rapists or serial murderers. A very important brain function is to stop us from doing terrible things. This function can be compromized by drugs, by alcohol and of course also by our own brain chemistry.

Yes these meds certainly are needed for ppl (myself included) who suffer from mental illnesses ... The problem along with what David already said is the EXTREME over prescribing of mental health or any meds in general. Id hazard a guess 70%+ of ppl on meds are so, unnecessarily. Meds aren't always the best choice but for 95% of patients its the only one they hear about or are offered.

The side-effects of meditation like antidepressants can be unpredictable. I'm chemically sensitive to a lot of medicines, so I've had to go through a lot of them. Always tell your doctor about these. Please don't self-prescribe medicines! It's just too dangerous! That doesn't mean trust doctors blindly, Trust how your body feels, tell your doctor about these feelings.

First off I’d like to say you are a courageous man for sharing your story and my thoughts and prayers go out you and your family. I knew you had to be a good dad when you mentioned you built a half pipe in your backyard for your son. I have a great father and I begged and pleaded with mine for years to build me one and he never did. Having dealt with mental health issues myself and specifically a negative emergency room inducing situation from just 2 days on Paxil I would like to know how exactly these doctors determine you have a chemical imbalance in your brain. Which chemicals are imbalanced and is there any tests or blood work to show this? My pcp put me on Paxil for stress and anxiety. 2 days of out of body hallucinations and 1 ER trip later I saw a real psychiatrist who said I never should have been put on SSRI’s for anxiety absolutely not. He put me on klonopin and 7 years later I’m off all psych meds with no more anxiety issues.

This is exactly why I decided to stay off medication for depression and anxiety after having a child. They always had a bad side effect, making me suicidal was just the least of my worries. Doctors have pressured me soooo many times. I tell them about my past experiences with meds like this and they tell me "well there's alot of new medications that have come out sinse then that you haven't tried"... Hell no,i rather keep my sanity thank you. I definitely don't want a new medication that hasn't been around very long, that's even more irresponsible. Wish they would stop prescribing this stuff to kids too. I'm convinced it's why we have sooo many more killings by kids than we did before. Most of them are on medications like this. I have had WAY more success getting rid of depression in so many other ways, eating healthy, exercise and talking to someone that cares (not just a paid therapist that will basically disown you just for missing one session) helps soooo much more to be honest. A doctor knows this too.

I'm so disappointed that he thought that he was better than everyone else, better than doctors, and could play with his own medication and dosage. Don't do this. I had to end a relationship, because the guy stopped his meds without telling me or his doctor. He didn't tell me until I asked why he was acting strange. It was so irresponsible of him to not involve others in that decision. I couldn't trust him again.

Speak for yourself. When I was still on the medication I was convinced it was helping me too but it was actually causing way more issues. (That I didn't even care about because the meds just made it so I didn't care about anything, you could have beat me and I would not have cared) I'm suprised I didn't end up in jail myself. It may help a few but for the most part it's a danger to the entire society when the doctors are just pressuring everyone to take it the second they admit they are depressed. I've been soooo much better off eating healthy and exercising, and having someone to talk to.
