Honestly, whether you swap in the beams or leave the 4age, there’s gonna be another engine sitting regardless. I say keep it in the nostalgia books and sort out the 4age.
If you need a modern engine.... Toyota 2ZZ-GE 1.8vvti 189bhp and a 6sp box standard. 9k recline. Around 130 lbs/ft if memory serves correctly. It's a chain driven engine. Used in 7th gen Celica GTS, corolla T sport and the lotus elise. Engine is a yamaha/Toyota Corolla designed unit. Bulletproof. These are uk market specs and names
@@IOTWVUVWTOI They came in the Toyota Matrix XRS and Pontiac Vibe GT here, but all the transmissions available with the 2ZZ are FWD, the C64 in the Exige, C63/60 in Celicas and C60s in Vibes and Trixes. I'm not sure if I've seen anyone mate a 2ZZ to a RWD transmission yet. They don't make a whole lot of low end torque but they're definitely fun when you rev them out
I would go for the stock engine, keep the original feel, your smile talking about it tell it all. Make it clean af paint the engine bay and all, full interior.

sort out the 4age, then tune it to perfection. you have one of the best sounding 4 cylinders of all time in that little 86 and it would be a shame to swap it for something else
That 8-6 is mint. My 2¢: do the side-draft Webers for the smiles, build up the wheel collection, and _never_ drift it. It’s such a beautiful piece. You should cruise it, take it to meets, take it on back roads where you can hear those intake sounds bouncing off the trees. Use it a lot, just don’t beat it up.
@@Jumoana I mean, I said drift it.. just not to tandem it. I've seen very few drift cars that have been tandemed more than a handful of times that don't have a few dents in them. You're taking the responsibility and carefulness you treat it out of your own hands and putting it into someone elses
Echoing what everyone else has said, keep the 4age. Those little engines are fun and super easy to work on. Grew up with 80’s mk1 MR2 the sound of checking compression brought back memories. Keep up the great videos!
Sell the beams swap, keep the 16v. Instead of doing valve guides on this head, swap to a small port head. ITBs or side-drafts down the road sounds good.

Engine look is so iconic for the car. It does not have crazy power but swapping it for some monstrosity just to get a couple of hundred horsepower more would really be a shame. I mean it is not going to be his top tier performance car anyways.
Personally I’d rebuild the top end of the 4age and throw itbs on it with the longest trumpets I could find on it. To each is own man do what you think would make you happiest. We’ll love it either way. ✌🏻

That literally truly blows my mind... My 65 F-85 442 convertible (high school car) is sitting in my garage right now, i bought my truck when i was 24, sitting in my garage right now. Bought my Harley when i was 35, sitting in my garage right now..... It's taken me a lifetime to get and maintain my stuff to 100 % bone stock perfect with everything working perfectly and all the paint perfect and exquisite interior.. i would never ever sell or trade, it just seems crazy to me

huge toyota fanboy, so this is obviously my favorite car you own now. the engine choice is a hard one though ima be honest. i think a 4age with webers, high comp, and some fat cams would be the best tbh
Full Interior, and the Beams makes sense because you can paint the engine bay while the motor is out. Would really tie everything together considering the wheels and seats and so on.
The reason these are hard to find everywhere including Japan is they're all in Ireland 😂😂 If you need parts make some Irish car friends and you'll find some real cool stuff

Watching you scrape around town brings me back to my old Volkswagen days. Only been pulled over for suspicion of dui while driving a low car. Had to explain that I was dodging holes and bumps lol.
With the old at the plugs, you might have done a semi wet compression check, re-do the compression check and add a bit of oil to every cylinder if the compression doesn't change you got your answer.
Those old school twin cam engines are so good looking and getting rarer you should think about making it into a glass top coffee table when you have finished with it in the car. So with that in mind putting Webbers on it makes much more sense because you will be able to look at them for years to come.

My car has a small port head, solex 40 side drafts, toda equal length manifold, toda 288 cams and toda adjustable gears, valve springs, shim under bucket, arp head studs, and a TRD headgasket, the thing screams from 3.5k to 9K rpm and is the most fun 150hp car you can own. Having spent considerable time behind a silver top 20v, and a beams swap in corollas, i can whole heartedly say if you want the full spirit of the 86 build the 4age, if it makes you smile now, a built 4age will make you grin from ear to ear non stop. And then there is the built 16v noise, just unbeatable.
From the car youtubers ive been following, jimmy adam tommy rudnick and you i always waiting for someone to do ae86 build. And im so glad thats you who did it first. Really looking forward for this build man
@@TheDdahc Not everything has to make sense to be good content. I’m sure everyone would love see Taylor working on one of those race motors in an AE86. Sure they may not make as much power as a K series or an SR but they’re very impressive motors. 300hp out of an N/A 1.9L 4 cylinder is no joke and sure while they’re expensive, Taylor has many other builds that he’s put way more money into.
@@snooz510 In full race trim and when they’re being pushed to the limit, yeah they don’t last very long. There are some people who have done street car builds with them though and they don’t have to rebuild them nearly as often as you would think. While it’s true, they are very high maintenance motors they don’t automatically explode when not in full race trim. Plenty of high performance race motors make it years without having to be pulled apart. Edit: Hasselgren also makes tuned 4A-GEs that aren’t full race spec that are less expensive and not quite as high maintenance
keep and rebuild/clean/fix up the 4age but also keep the beams for a future swap for another car or if the 4age pops you'll have the beams as a backup. another option is swap in the beams but slowly rebuild/hop up the 4age over time (since parts can be hard to find) then once done swap the 4age back in.
Love the new 86, never was a big 240 guy but I'm in love with the older asian cars 280z , 70s gtr, ae86's, in my opinion are the penicle of old-school asian Dom market.
I would keep the original engine. Make camshaft exhaust manifold and 2 double weaver carburettors on it. The performance will be top for the 86 and only the sound will be awesome.

It was fun driving with the PO of that car at VIBES. Definitely a great come up. Since you have an assortment of other drift cars, keeping it 4age would probably be the move, just keep some spare t50's on hand or swap in a w58. I'm excited to see what you do with it and I hope to drive with you some day.

That's definitely the valve seals. The oil is seeping through into the top of the cylinder, there's no where else it would be coming from. It's especially easy to tell if it smokes more when you start it after it's been sitting a few days or if it's been idling for about ten minutes

I'm 100% going with the old school side draft Webers options. The induction sound --- soooooo good. And they look the business. I don't care if they make less power. I think you made an excellent trade. And those wheels! So cool. Excited to see what happens with this one, I think you'll hang onto it for quite a while. I know low is king, but man, I'd HAVE to raise than thing up a 1/2 inch at least, I can't drive a car that has to dodge every tiny road flaw. That was a rough test ride, crashing your way down the street.

That whine in the rear is the diff same thing happend to my 86 on a road trip it locked up took it to a shop he lubed everything he could but it forever screamed at me ahh memories

As a 4 age devoted owner Much love! Still a silver top forged with Turbo running 10 pounds! Thats a whole nuther kettle of fun! Beams and or SR nah what ever A silver top 2 valve turbo runs 250 rear wheel very very conservatively
Why not just a charger to the 4age making it 4agze. lots of torque from down low to all the way up to 7500 rpm if I recall at a decent 0.5bar 0.8 for the later gen 3 models . keep it time correct.
Personally I love it when old school cars are fast. I've got a clean 1986 mitsubishi starion that's running 14lbs of boost, and is getting turbo k swapped this winter when the car meets end. I'd love to see you make this thing fast just to surprise people on the street, but still be able to drive it nice and slow when you want to
Dude back in P.R. My family is full toyota and had a bunch of ae86’s, starlets and older corollas. Pretty much all of them was running on dual webers and there’s no better sound like dual weber grunts!!! Hell yah, im hyped on this!!!!💪💪
As much as it pains me to say this because this care is so perfect and not to mention complete, a Kevin front clip conversion would be dope. However I know yer a mad man with a big brain and could probably figure out how to make both front clips bolt in/on and swap them whenever you want!!! Just my two pennies. 4age big set of cams, high comp pistons and some trumpets and done. The noises make the car feel faster than it is and that's all you want. Imo and mad 4age sounds better than a beams even though it lacks a few horse puppies compared.
If oil can leak past the spark plug threads and into the cylinders causing the smoking situation compression would push past the threads as well. Check valve guide wear which causes valve stem seals to wear.
You should make a series where you buy a car and see how far you can trade up. Buy a car, toss some budget parts at it then trade it up and repeat. I'd be hooked to see what you can get
Put the Beams engine in with itbs, build it to mild low power with a 10k redline. Anemic at cruising speeds but a screamer when you mat the loud pedal. The ae86 is a momentum car, drifting didn't start with 500+hp cars it started with driving slow cars fast and never lifting. Drive it at vintage track events and do some road racing, show off the balance that these chassis are known for. A friend had a gts hatch, helped him install a black top and it was hands down one of the most fun cars I've ever driven. Slow, but the giggle factor was extremely high
Totally understand the Nostalgia. My dad bought a stock 90 rx7 convertible and he passed a year after buying it I daily drove it after he passed and then I come home from work and it caught fire. Would love to own another just for the reason I didn’t get to what I wanted to do it yet
