Furlough for three months was an eye opener. Strength, motivation and tolerance improved hugely, with it being the focus every other day and running first thing in the morning instead of after work. The first week back to the rat race seemed to cause it all to ebb away again, other runners at work found that first week working and running hard too. Trying to maintain a furlough level of ability will be impossible I think. For motivation check out his book or the various podcasts David Goggings has featured on. Sounds silly but little snippets will worm their way into your subconscious and resurface when you need them.
That of sleep could be due to low electrolytes and or due to low liver glycogen stores from all the running. It takes around 48 hrs to replenish glycogen stores.
Training for ultras was 3 or 4 days a week and 3 or 4 days of rest. The week might be runs on Tue, Thu and Sat or Sat, Sun, Tue, Thu or Sat, Sun, Wed or some other like combination. The training usually was a long run with hills most weeks, a speed workout every other week, with the other days being tempo runs of 7 to 12 mile. My rest days were truly rest days. Nothing remotely like a workout. I tried a similar training regimen to the one in the video more than once and always came up injured. My workouts helped me do well in my age group competition so I feel they were better suited to my abilities and lifestyle.
Hey Daryl , don’t suffer in silence , we are all here for you , running is my saviour, and it will help you. Anytime you want to talk contact me - YNWA
It really has helped me. Also resistance training and monitoring progress at the same time. It makes me see progress physically which means setting targets and achieving them.
My new favorite channel. I'm 51 and only started running three weeks ago. I look like Joe Cocker when I'm making my way around the track, but this channel gives me hope that I can do a 5k in a few months, and maybe a half-marathon next year. KInd of hard when I'm binge watching my new favorite channel, though!
So glad you are here. I'm a 55 year old guy and I know exactly how you feel. Understand this: runners of all ages and ability levels are glad to see you and are supporting you. Keep on going the hardest part is already behind you.
Also 51, running for 6 months, big challenge is not to get injury, already had problems with my knee and achilles heel. I think I shouldn't run past 5k to avoid injury.
@@jayvonpryor1956 the couch to 5k programme takes 9 weeks. For a beginner 2 to 3 weeks I reckon is extremely fast unless you're already a very sporty fit person.
Yes, she is lovely, crazy, inspirational for us other crazy people. Actually, she makes me look so BORING. I need to work harder at being more like Anna.
Because of lockdown it's been the perfect time for me to make the change from Marathon to Ultra Running. I'm up between 0500 and 0530 and do all my runs first thing. 10-20km are run fasted and anything 20-40km are with my pack and food/fluids. My weekly volume has gone from 40/50km to 80/100km and I'm loving it. Love the Channel Anna.
I think it was interesting that the run you really really didn't want to do turned out to be OK once you'd gone through the mental battle of getting out the door. I think we can all relate to this scenario and it's nice to know it's normal and I'm not being a wimp when I'm tired and don't want to go out for a run.
Yeah, it's runny how sometimes those runs that you're not so keen on, and start off with a grudge, often turn out to be great runs.... It helps a lot for the motivation... because next time you're not feeling grand... you think... hey! but maaaaaaybe this could be a great run! lol. I'll never know unless I do it (is my mantra then). I recently got a pretty decent time for a run I wasn't in the mood for (at the start) - I don't know... maybe it also has something to do with usually starting off slower on those runs - and finishing stronger.
Monday: AM 70 minute run / PM 30 minute run Tuesday: AM Hill session (15m warm-up, 5x 3 minute hills, 15m cooldown) / PM S&C Wednesday: AM 60 minute run / PM 45 minute easy run Thursday: Rest day - 1hr yoga Friday: AM 60 minute easy run / 60 minute walk Saturday: AM 60 minute tempo run / PM 30 minute walk Sunday: AM 90 minute long run
Ooohhh....that feeling when you're 1/2 way through your run and suddenly your stomach tells you it's about to empty but doesn't tell you the route it plans to use..... ...😳
Great Effort!! I am signed in on posts on someone who runs ultra's. IHe is on 'Recovery' but 21 miles in one day is actually his idea of 'recovery'.It made me laugh cause it sounded delirious.
What a trooper Anna. Thank you once again for putting your body on the line for the benefit of us to learn through your experiences! I love the long runs too and was planning a 20 mile run tomorrow but I'm hoping it might be a bit cooler. Getting up early anyway so I can make use of the fresh morning air! Off now to get some more carbs, take care!
I am so glad that someone understands what I personally have been going through since the begining of the year. I have been tired literally all the time. What I got from this video, I should probably do more of the strength training and yoga.
Congratulations! Wow! I might give this a go. Juggling work and training is the hardest thing but since I started working from home, I think it might just be doable. Thanks or the inspiration!
Brilliant video Anna - I'm an older runner and am training for my first ultra in January 2021. It was really interesting to see how you fit the training in, and it has made me think about how I need to structure my training.
Love this channel ❤️ I always binge some of your videos when I feel particularly down about a run, because y’all remind me that the effort is not in vain and that every minute spent training is something to celebrate. Much love 💕
Well done Anna, love these vlog type videos! I'm sure it takes a lot of multi tasking filming this and editing other videos at the same time. And no I wouldn't be able to do an ultra week as I work a 10 hour days, would struggle mentally and physically.
It seemed like less running than I would have expected honestly. I think when I hear that Aliphine Tuliamuk runs 90 or so mile weeks now (likely more when actually training for something) I think about how long that would take me, but of course she is faster than I am. So it’s more “oh we each spent 90 minutes training Sunday morning” even if she covers 15 miles in that time and I cover 8.
Thanks for sharing! As you say, it's all relative - and as Anna said in the video, it doesn't seem like a lot because the training is measured in time not distance, but it all adds up 🙂
My wife watched the video with me and said "Shes's a lovely young lady and a hard worker." Indeed. Great video, a lot to think about for when I return. One thing on my running bucket list is to do a long run on a canal in England. Maybe next year. Thanks for great content!
Awesome video Anna! Thanks for putting in such a great effort. And (from New Zealand) thanks for the long video - can’t get enough of the Running Channel
Thanks for the video. It was fun to watch. It seems that there is material here for 50 videos and I hope you will incorporate the material from the week into future videos. I would like to see what yoga you did and the information on nutrition would be good as well as mind set. I liked that walking and biking was included. This can reduce the load on your joints while still increasing your lung capacity.
I’m aiming to run 100km on the beautiful Gold Coast , so im learning to run at MAF pace and putting in the time on legs. I jog with my favourite 4 legged running pal so every day is a wonderful experience. The running Channel is so much fun and fantastic information, thank you for all you do.🐶👟👟😊💕
That's super interesting that you started waking up really early! When I ramp up my training I also start waking up at 4 or 5 in the morning against my will.
It was so strange - and quite frustrating because I knew I was tired! Early night are the way forward when training hard, for sure. Gotta get those valuable zzz’s (Anna)
You're always brilliant Anna! Well done!! Hope you got some rest and lots of praise from your running crew. Thanks for sharing your personal thoughts and learning from this difficult challenge.
Great video. I love your dedication, Anna. I've just watched it after a hard day of work, on the couch with a cold beer. Now I actually feel like going for a run. 😁
What hungry, tired, sour, happy, new level, incredible fitness, and a fog deep, never give up, limitlessness, learning more about your own mental, emotional state in 24hrs than in 10yrs of therapy. Lots of dead foot wear. Realizing that you can run more miles/km in one weekend, than you could in a month when you first started. The difference between an ordeal and adventure is attitude 😁
Awesome work! I’m going to try and complete this training schedule this upcoming week. I’ve been looking to start a new training plan and do some new things before really diving into ultras in 2021 so this is great timing!
I have been training for ultra trails for 3 years now. I have kids and a full time job. It looks like my routine! I can assure you it can look like a lot, but it is doable and you have so much gain if you stay consistent over the years. You have to build up to get to a routine like this, it also takes time to get there! Awesome video :) !
Great nuggets here i.e. long run broken-down into chucks. Oh gosh I remember marathon training last year and if you wasn't on top of the laundry cycle = game over! So much prep and planning involved; almost like a full-time job on top of your normal day job lol As always great content!
When I was training for my first 50k, schedule was everything, with 2kids, 50hr work weeks, strength, flexibility, and 45-60 miles a week, felt like life was timed down to the second!
Thank you for sharing this journey. It has reminded me that running is truly a joy and a wonderful escape in my life. As someone who has struggled with eating disorders and other challenges, running is an extension of myself, my body, my soul, and my mind. A true life-changer. 💚
Nice video girl. I’m taking on my first ultra this year and I’m learning so much about the sport and myself. I’m amazed at what I’m capable of and annoy your videos for advice and tips. It’s been fun trying out new techniques to find what my running style is. Looking forward to more.
This was a brilliant video 🙂 well done Anna 👍 I've just started week 10 of my training plan for my first triathlon and this video has gave me a loads of useful information and inspiration, I ask myself 'why' and it's because I want to prove to myself and the negative people around me that bigger people can be athletes and I thrive on challenges. It's so hard fitting training in around a full time physical job, and I'm only doing roughly 8-9 hours a week! I've got my triathlon in April then giving myself a couple of weeks to catch up with my non existent social life 😂 then I will begin training for my first ever Great North Run 👌 you channel inspires me a lot, thank you 🙂
absolutely loving your videos. Im trying to get back into running :) that is some training, good to see a normal day (that you work), but ggod you dont have the to and from work in the traffic on top of that hard training!!! You are so encouraging, thank you for your videos :)
Congratulations on sticking to it. Every time you accomplish another tough challenge it strengthens character and will power,. Building those benefit you for a lifetime.
@@runningchannel really enjoyed it ...had totally lost my running mojo about 6 months ago and your regular videos have spurred me back on to get out there a few days a week again and enjoy the local countryside and enjoy running again . Thank you 🙏
Fantastic vlog Anna. Gives a little insight to Ultra training. Doing my first Ultra (a 50k) in November and planning to do Race to the Stones 100k next year. Enjoy your sleep 😴
YOU'RE AMAZING ANNA!! So so so happy to have met you, you motivate me everyday :) Esp with all these insane challenges... See you at the next TRIBE challenge!!
I can relate to so much of this!! Especially work and add family along with running!Reason why, super important, and getting up in the morning: don’t hit the snooze and imagine yourself up!
Great video thanks! I’m training for Ironman stuff, so similar to Ultra in terms of quantity but split over the 3 disciplines. Some useful tips! Reminds me I need to do my S&C work!
Great video! This is an interesting challenge and one that I feel would suit me. I am an early bird and run from 6 am onward as it gives me the start I need for the day. I work 10-12 hours on the computer and motivation end of the day is a non-starter. I am the same with fast running, long distance I enjoy it, 13 km Sat and 20 km Sun was the norm for me (just finished a week's holiday). My only concern at the moment is my back due to bad posture on the computer and kind of follows into my running... a big problem!
Can you guys do a video about what you eat in a day for your running? I have been struggling with when, what, and how much I should be eating on the days I am running. Thank you so much. I love you guys and your channel. 😊
After watching one of your other videos, I prefer to run in the morning before breakfast - it seems to set me up for the day. Thank you for an amazing channel and the inspiration. X
Great video, there is a lot important and interesting information, and as always Anna your are the best and my favourite The Running Channel crew member :D
Hi Anna, I'm 48 and you've been such a huge help on my first hal marathon, I couldn't thank you enough, I have in my head the thought of running a whole marathon, I'm going to keep wat hing and learning to get ready, I cried also when I got to the line on my half, it's emotional, when you realize you are more capable than you've ever thought!💪 I wanted ro ask you if yoi could please pass me the pretzels recipe, I didn't get that. Take care, I watch you every day, sometimes I repeat.. Thank you!
After running in the morning for months then switching to nights, I too learned that i am in fact NOT a morning person. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 but it shows that this awlays takes dedication and if its something you love and want you will get better. Cant wait to hit the road after my knee starts feeling better.
Thanks so much, just back from solo, self supported fast pack on the southern upland way. 215 miles in 5 days, 23 hours and 29 minutes. Learned a lot on my first multi day ultra, 6 days of ultra distance. But loving learning some stuff here, especially the psychology side.
For sure would be interesting to try something like this. The mileage isn't significantly more than I'd usually do, but the key difference is all that stretching, conditioning, and other little stuff that I admittedly skip a lot of the time. I'm sure I'd benefit from trying to fit more of that into my week.
Thanks so much for this! I have a week off coming up soon and plan to just camp and train every day --> preparing for a 15k mountain race in Korea. ;) Should be fun. I'm going to add "look for birds" into my training.. ;) Cheers. ;
Well done Anna! Inspiring stuff! For the last 3 years I have done an intense 4 month schedule for an annual 24 hour race each September where I have run between 60 and 70 miles a week at the peak of the schedule which I have to fit around a 10 hour working day. 2 lessons learned for me are 1. having the right nutrition - especially at lunch time (regardless of how busy you might be) so that the evening session is easier; and 2. being part of a group - even if it is only on line - so that you have the peer group pressure every day to get you out of bed and on the road!
I agree I've always enjoyed the mental challenge part of running more than anything else. Don't forget to listen to your body and know the difference between hurting and hurt. It might keep you off of crutches (like me).
WOW...you are great! This was...eye opening. I'm 27 years old and have always been active and work stand up. I started running 9-10 weeks ago and decided to listen to my body instead of following a program. Last work week was ordinary 40 hours on foot + 10 hours running(90% easy), 2 weight training and some flexibility and mobility. I was thinking this is just bottom average for serious runner. Now i really don't know what to do. Thanks for video and greatest channel.
