I travelled 10,000 miles from Canada to Australia, to ride fake snow into an airbag. Was it worth it?

No clue why RU-vid recommended this video for me but I’m super glad I watched it. Great breakdown of airbags and the skills around them! Personally I would LOVE to snowboard onto an airbag, just don’t have the confidence to huck it on the snow after breaking my tailbone twice and my wrist once 🤣

Hey Liam. Skydivers use wind tunnels to perfect their skills. Gymnasts use foam beds to perfect their skills. Highliners use slacklines to perfect their skills. High divers didn’t start at that height. Boxers use punch bags, and speed balls. Makes sense for snowboarders and skiers to use airbags to perfect their skills too.

as a skateboarder it's cool to learn that snowboarders, who already land/fall on snow which is the softest ground possible, are now searching for even softer grounds to fall. I wish we had the same anti-injury culture on skateboarding
@slinkeyj3
@slinkeyj3 Год назад
I will 100% agree that snow is softer than asphalt (plus a much lower chance of scrapes and rash), buuuuut, the super packed snow that makes up jumps (and a solid amount of East Coast USA mountains), is pretty damn hard, and honestly kinda feels like ice. Softer than asphalt and concrete? Yes. Still hurts like a MOFO when you take a spill on it? Also yes lol.
@GreenMachineOG

I skate and snowboard, snow is softer than asphalt sure but hardpacked snow on the landing of a 40ft+ jump is NOT so soft lol. Ice sure hurts to fall on too! @@dpointdefender8196 Even the guy who made the video said it's a very expensive sport with a high price for entry-level much less beyond. You think this is about skill, he should just get a more marketable skill? Or I guess he could have been born wealthy upper class like most kids who snowboard. Many people with even college educations live paycheck to paycheck due to costs of living, and areas around ski resorts aren't exactly known for being cheap places to live. They didn't beg for money, they just stated a simple fact, and you want to speak down to them and tell them to pull themselves up by their bootstraps. If you have a very marketable skill and make a lot of money, good for you, try to understand how that's not an option for everyone, and a majority of people live paycheck to paycheck because some people think it's okay to pay others poverty wages, because they believe people who work "lowskill" jobs as you might refer to them deserve to live in poverty.

@@dpointdefender8196 As someone who used to snowboard occasionally in my early teens, it is indeed a very expensive hobby, especially if you are able to have your own gear and have the money to practice enough to be a pro...all of those folks are upper middle class and higher... just like being a formula 1 driver or any other number of rich people sports. It is what it is. I can almost guarentee this guy comes from a very wealthy family... What kind of guy his age has the money to freaking fly to Australia just to snowboard on fake snow? just the plane ticket alone would cost thousands of dollars. Normal people can't even come close to being able to afford that.

@@sparklesparklesparkle6318 Hiking local hills is free. If you can buy used gear, at a gear swap, you can typically buy for half off or more. Sometimes sponsored riders will sell gear for cash, ask around at a ski resort. Also, work as a volunteer at a resort, you get a free season pass in exchange for 15 hours of volunteer time. I took the volunteer route and had a night job and enjoyed a season out West. You can split housing costs with people, or get a job with the mountain ownership/ski resort, that would include both staff housing and a seasons pass. Where there is a will, there is a way. 😉

Yeah dude 100%, this had something similar it was a giant giant pool type thing very deep filled with foam, and kids would launch off one or two theyre might of actually been 3 ramps that launched into it, it was atleast two though. But this was for getting kids used to launching off of ramps like that with a bike or a skateboard, and i remember one of the instructors was like now ur like a snowboard kid, i launch myself off stuff like this and u fall and u its like nothing something along the lines of that, and i laughed. But i found out the hard way lol that there isnt these type of things for snowboarding really, atleast in new york so u gotta hope that snow breaks ur fall if you fall, but tbh my worst injurys on snow was by a rail, i came off a 5050 and tried to back 180 out but slid out early and when i came around with the 180 my right leg smashed into front beginning of the rail and it cut my leg open bad. But ive smashed my head alot from jumps to, i cant go year round so even the first few times ill go a year and launch off stuff ill rock a helmet because i know im gunna smash my head, but once im like 3 days in ill stop rocking one becuase ill know wich jumps i can hit and what i can work with, what spots i like, once i get a feel for the terrain im good.

Interesting perspectives on airbags, Liam. I'm an outdoor rock climber and over the past 100 years there have been a TON of improvements in equipment and technique that the climbing community has had to debate and grapple with and still struggle with. Most importantly, I've learned that if you do things differently, it is important to be open and honest with how you did it. If you're proactive and straightforward about niche strategies and methods you used to accomplish something it gives your peers the freedom to make up their own mind and shows you aren't trying to deceive anyone or be disingenuous. But if you claim an accomplishment and hide controversial strategies, it can backfire and make you look like a "cheater".

Being a casual snowboarder, seeing the use of airbags to help with getting into tricks and even perfecting them seems like a decent development for beginners and intermediates. A little backstory; My parents met and dated skiing and eventually got married, as a family tradition we go skiing/snowboarding every couple of years. They resorts we've been to have been to the most are Ski Apache in New Mexico and Wolf Creek in Colorado (Wolf creek has some of the best runs on the right side of the gondola, at the top of the summit). I haven't seen airbags used on those runs but I'll keep an eye out for them in the future, I'm also getting ready to build up a kit with a Arbor A-Frame, Arbor bindings and some Van's boots (got a decent jacket & slushers set already).

I've only ever snowboarded on fake snow. Ironically just after I finally was confident to try the pro slope and go on the half pipe, a few months later the entire place burnt down. Everybody that was a regular and had ears knew the place needed re tracking and also that it was no accident. There's no proof, but basically it was an insurance scam. The only dry ski village in Sheffield had burnt to the ground.... The saddest part is, the tracks have been left to rot. They've mostly been ripped up by chavs and used as a place to smoke and drink, have fires and hang out. Most of the track is either gone or full of plants and weeds now.

Sean white killed the snowboarding industry lmao, it was sad to see. All around the time burton bought forum, it started dieing. People were starting to ditch snowboarding and were legit ripping up parks on skii's, places like zootspace popped up jetskii's, all thanks to pretty much sean white being a carrot top looking dude who they chose to represent the industry basically, wich is bizarre for a industry that will label kids wack or "kooks" if you have bad style. Once that guy started blowing up and gaining like fans the entire industry started getting worse, it kind of changed now and people forgot about him lol. But people snowboarding needid like cool pros for kids to look up to and never really had alot of that it did with dudes like MFM, but that was kind of pre sean white, most sean white fans probably have no idea who that is. I mean i didnt let it affect me, i mainly skated, and would snowboard seasonally, but i saw the change because i was heavy in the skate scene.

I have never snowboarded, nor was I really interested in snowboarding. Now I am though. This was so well put together. I am glad this was in the algorithm giving me the opportunity to watch. Now I need to take a vacation and snowboard for the first time. I am 23.
