Is Wessie 22% American Shorthair? Or 12% Ragdoll? After using three tests, I learned that different DNA tests gave radically different results. And, as it turns out, the breed analysis might not mean what you think it does. Watch the full video to find out what happened when we used 3 different DNA tests from Basepaws, Wisdom Panel, and Orivet.
The Basepaws DNA Test is currently just $99 on Amazon: cats.com/link/?href=https%3A%...

I have also started a separate comment related to some scientific points, but I wanted that to be separate from making a small contribution to try and help the mission of All About Cats. I have also started to run some additional analysis with raw Basepaws data - after trying to follow up on some more things and waiting for some more responses, I can briefly follow up with you off-line. My Doc offered to do some testing on my kitten after our 3rd visit because she is a breeder as well. I of course couldn't afford it so she said she was so convinced my kitty was a rare breed of cat i didn't have to pay for any of the tests! About 6 months later i recieved a package through Fed-ex that i had NO understanding of any of the paperwork enclosed lol. Long story short, Sweet Pea ended up having all the genetic markers to say she is a breed called Kao Manee which is really cool to find out i was very grateful to Dr. Alice to take all the time and money to find out she was this pretty special cat. I love her just the same as ever regardless of what breed she is! Thanks for all of the info about what goes into the testing it shows me even more that i chose the correct Doc.

Hi Mallory :) it's been a minute! I recently found this stray cat outside my house and it was clear that this would probably be his last winter if he had to live outside any further. He's in my hallway with a nice setup while we wait for his lab results to get back. I didn't think about doing a DNA test though.. We don't know too much about him besides that he's a very good 10 year old boy and was either lost or abandoned by his previous owners. A DNA test would definitely help us out in learning a little bit more about him to see if there's anything else we should keep an eye on. I feel very fortunate that he came into my life and I'm really hoping that he's able to join our little family soon. My younger cats could really learn a thing or two about an older boy! Help with a name would be awesome though! If anybody wants to chime in their ideas, it would be great :) He has medium length white fur, a gray striped tail and on his forehead, he has this gray, almost triangle shaped block of fur on his head. It almost looks like a bad haircut, haha!

Thank you again for posting this video. In terms of some specific thoughts/experiences on my end: - While I had inconsistent results for the individual breeds (between companies, or for the same cat with multiple samples submitted to Basepaws), the *broader ancestry results* were consistent: like I assume is true for most cats, my cat Bastu had more Western than Eastern ancestry for the Basepaws reports, the Wisdom Panel results, and the UC-Davis VGL results (along with re-analysis of her raw Whole Genome Sequencing data for selected Basepaws samples). So, I don't want the less robust results to weaken trust in more robust cat (or human) genomics results. I think we agree overall, but I wanted to mention something with respect to the ancestry part. - I am not sure if I am being too nit picky, but there are both feline and canine tests available under "For Veterinarians" on the Basepaws page (through a partnership with MWI Animal Health, I believe?). I am not a vet, so I don't know if these are preorders or currently available kits. However, my understanding is that the long-term plan for Basepaws is not to only focus on cats. - I think it is important to learn about the experiences with others, but I think it is fair to say that there is some complications with my cat's Oral/Dental Health Test results from Basepaws. However, I am interested to learn more about samples from other people's cats, since my cat's samples might have somehow managed to be an outlier (in 6 samples at different times, but for 1 cat, and I only have raw data for the 2 Whole Genome Sequencing samples). If it might help, I published a blog post today (which I was originally aiming to post in January). So, if there is some understanding that I will probably update that post, then I am not sure if that might possibly be helpful to provide additional information for some customers (especially if they have the raw data for Basepaws Whole Genome Sequencing). Of course, there are also earlier posts, but I don't think I can link them in a RU-vid comment (and I am not sure how good a match they are to most of the the viewers on RU-vid). Nevertheless, if there is anything that I can do to help by sharing, then I am happy to do so. Thank you yet again!

It doesn’t relate to more recent communication from All About Cats, but I had some material prepared that I had not previously posted. So, in the event that it is useful/helpful for others, I thought perhaps I should mention that I think the *type of evidence* provided for a “breed” results can fall in one or more of these *3 general categories:* *1)* Variation related to *causal gene or genes.* For example, if I understand correctly, then I believe that the alterations that cause the Sphynx to lack hair are in 1 gene. Likewise, I believe that *Scottish Folds* should have *1 copy* of the causal variant causes the folder ears. This is important because having _2 copies can cause severe health problems_ and breeders should therefore only have 1 Scottish Fold parent for a Scottish Fold “purebred”. *2)* A *relatedness* estimate: *if there is DNA for a cat’s parents and both parent are purebred cats, then you can prove that you have a purebred cat.* As mentioned in *1),* I think the reverse doesn’t always prove the opposite (such as the Scottish Fold, where **only** one parent ethically should have the folded ear trait). I think there are often (but not always) _selectively neutral_ variation, which helps with being able to vary at many nearby parts of the genome without necessarily affecting appearance or health. *3)* I think some companies provide potentially confusing results that I might call *ancestry* results. If *you have close to 100% ancestry, then that may still be noteworthy* (especially for someone like myself, who won’t breed by cat or bring my cat to a cat show). However, I think some extra effort might be needed to clearly communicate what you received. For example, even though “Breed” is in the test name, Basepaws at least used to have a warning _”The Basepaws Breed Index is not a breed test, and can not tell exactly what breed your cat is.”_ I thought Windom Panel also provided a warning at one point and they do mix in the word _ancestry_ among the results for the “Breed Mix,” but I am having some difficulty finding the step and exact wording for such a warning. In fact, I think adding existing variation from non-purebred cats is done intentionally to reduce health problems. In such a situation, I think the distant relatedness might be confusing the direction of inheritance to the purebred references, but I can also imagine other possible explanations. I think there are also often (but not always) _selectively neutral_ variation, which helps with being able to vary randomly by earlier geographic locations (without necessarily affecting appearance or health). Also, again, Scottish Folds will have close relatives where only a subset have folded ears (if bred responsibility). However, if there are not technical issues/limitations and caveats like that aren’t common, then *I think the questionable results like for my cat as well as Wessie tend to be much more likely with noticeably less than 100% estimated “ancestry” (especially if are talking about estimations for a single breed).* Best wishes to everybody and their cats!

Where I question some of these results is when they mention relatively "new" breeds like the Ragdoll or breeds that aren't commonly found outside of a specific geographical region. For the most part cats have not been selectively bred for centuries the way dogs have, so focusing primarily on recognized breeds as listed in the "cat fancy" is a bit misleading. Are there significant numbers of Ragdolls that are getting loose and breeding randomly? I don't think so. On the other hand, Siamese (and to a lesser extent Persians) have been breeding with feral North American cats for many, many generations now, so it is more likely those genes would show up in a random-bred cat. I have also heard that if you know where different ethnic groups settled in North America you can get a pretty good idea of what kind of coat patterns, colors, body types, hair length, and other features you are likely to find in those areas. The cats the Dutch brought over when they came to my part of Michigan are going to reflect cats that were native to the Netherlands whereas the cats in California that are descended from cats the Spanish brought over are going to reflect those found in Spain. My take on all this is that if you are dealing with a rescue cat of unknown ancestry I'd be suspicious of results that showed newly-established or rare breeds. I do agree much more research is called for in this area and it's a fascinating one.

It showed he had the gene for the temperature sensitive albinism associated with Siamese, but showed that 44% of him is “Broadly Western” with much smaller amounts of other specific breeds. I’m super curious what that means. Like are they just unable to tell which of the Western breeds that portion of his DNA is? 🤔 I noticed it doesn’t have Siamese on the list of breeds and it made me wonder what most Siamese show up as on Basepaws

Now, do I care that 'Anerican Shorthair' is just jargon for 'mutt'? Not at all, nothing wrong with a 'mutt' cat or dog. . . and given how cats reproduce and how many of our cats find their homes it doesn't really matter in the long run. . . it just is interesting to thing that we humans have really only recently started to get involved with cats as a species as opposed to dogs when both have part of our lives for thousands of years.

They're all just way too big for a kitty mouth. Even the smallest and best I've had to dremel down to fit. Also the amount more products there are that are VOHC approved for dogs than cats is insane. Tropiclean is only authorized to use the "controls plaque" claim, but they have fraudulently listed "controls plaque and tartar" on their products. When I contacted them about this, they just blew me off. Unfortunately most "dental" products sold aren't that effective. I'd say healthymouth is the exception. I'm not a scientist or anything but I like to research this sort of thing. MessyBeest is a not for profit source of a lot of such info. I find the breed information a little dubious. The way cats breeds work is that some breeds are "natural", but some are based on working with some small variations and breeding selectively. Natural breeds seem more workable (like Maine Coon or Siamese). Ragdoll is a kind of new breed based on some breeding of Angora like cats into Persians. How would this happen? Maybe a granddad Ragdoll became a stray and went feral and then mix bred with some domestic shorthairs in the vicinity. It seems unlikely though not impossible. The shelter picked them up. But that's maybe how this happens. I do think a lot of the dog breed testing has been dubious at best (tiny smooth dog is part German shepherd, fox terrier, and cocker spaniel--okaay!). You'll see claims made for rare breeds and so on, though I don't see the cat DNA testing get quite that sketchy. The health info seems more useful or perhaps if there is something leading you to think the cat might be part Siamese or something. I did think you brought up the key points here though. Thanks for the video and your channel.

Just my personal opinion ... I do not have, nor will I ever have, any biological descendants. While I'm curious about my lineage, it is simply that - a curiosity. It will benefit nobody "downstream" so I won't pay for my own DNA testing to find out. Similarly, my four cats will have no descendants. Once we're all dust, that's it - nothing downstream so I don't see the personal need for such a product from an ancestry point of view. All the tests shown ended up with extremely general results anyway. (A friend had DNA testing done on a dachshund puppy she rescued - one test produced results claiming the little black dog was 25% Great Pyrenees!) My female cats are random black/white, calico, tortie, and tuxedo. They're all DSH except for the calico - her fur is a little longer. My vet could probably tell me their blood type if I asked during their annual routine blood test. I don't need a DNA test to tell me these things. The only useful part I can see in this is the indication of genetic markers for potential predisposition to diseases or abnormal conditions. Wessie turned up negative for everything, so I think it would be useful to see the results for a cat that DID test positive for some issue that could be correlated by direct diagnosis. For example, my black/white has just had a bout with liver inflammation - would something like that show up as a predisposition in a DNA test? Again, this was just an opinion and I don't mean to discourage others from seeking out these products. This was another great and thorough review.

It's just fun to see the history of lineage, not just something for future breeding - whether for human or cat. It helps explain maybe inherited behaviors, personality, and disease.

Perhaps the potential is there, and the technology and worthiness in cat DNA testing will truly evolve and develop over time, but presently it sure feels a little like pseudo science, akin to a fantasy sport, filled with wishful but inconsequential data similar to what Elizabeth Holmes introduced to the world with her Theranos machine.

You sound like a delight, not everyone has a deformed cat that can't breathe because of the weirdness of humans liking crippling their pets. Pugs are another adorable example of what shouldn't be.
