@@jacobarcher1097: Heat trapping is the same as cool trapping. The only difference is when you trap the temperature in question. Open your windows at night and turn on a fan, or as many as you have. @Kimmie6772

My way of thinking about it is this: Y'know how you have to gradually adjust an indoor plant to the outside or else it gets shocked by the sudden change? It's kind of like that. Your body is used to dealing with certain temperatures or environments so when you encounter weather you're not used to it's kind of bad. But I will always prefer sleeping in a cold room over a hot room because I dont wanna sweat in my sleep and i cant go without a blanket. Edit: also dont let anyone in texas or California make fun of you cuz we cant survive without air conditioning. I would not want to live in central america where they get tons of humidity in 110 degree weather.

Suggestion: not just her, but everyone involved in the channel (production, front-end, etc), all doing their normal weekly routine, each water lasting 1 week each round, where one round is them drinking certain quantities of water: just when they're thirsty; or however much they want, just at specific times of day; or drinking a total of 8 cups daily. Maybe get even more people involved, for a better sample. Note: this is probably not at all practical, and definitely not worth a fraction of the effort, but if you *really* wanted an idealish experiment, this might be the way to go.

It's not actually unhealthy to drink electrolyte water all day, just a bit of a waste, because your body will simply excrete the surplus. So unless you care about the electrolyte levels in your urine for some bizarre reason, there's no added value in drinking electrolyte water constantly.
@jasonreed7522
@jasonreed7522 Год назад
@@rjfaber1991We do care about the concentration of dissolved salts in our urine. When a solution becomes oversaturated the solvent will precipitate out, which in the case of salt means crystals form/grow. We have a name for when this happens inside the kidneys, we call the crystal a "Kidney Stone", you may have heard of them. Additionally, electrolyte imbalances can be very dangerous, but you have to be doing something weird to get there. "Drink when you're thirsty, don't drink when you're not" As someone who got kidney stones because I did not drink enough water through a period of a few days (barely the amount of one mug per day), as I had not felt thirsty to drink more, I cannot recommend to follow this advice. Drinking is important, whether water, tea, coffee, etc, as it makes your kidneys function and brings you minerals and stuff, and over everything, eliminate toxins and stuff your body doesn't need. Drink, even when you do not feel thirsty, especially if you feel tired early in the day, or have dry/tired eyes. Do not worry about the amount, if you do not exercise much; rather about the frequency. I would not hope anyone to have kidney stones, not even my worst enemies.

It really depends on your region and what kind of water reserves are available. Also, the quality may differ depending on the local water grid. There are a lot of places where tap water is just as safe to drink as mineral water, but there are others where you really shouldn't use tap water for food preparation unless it has been properly boiled. I normally like videos on the channel but I hated this one... The method is highly unscientific and I don't see a point in torturing someone like this... How she feels has no bearing on how body is managing the water balance. Dehydration symptoms are quite late so unless you test blood electrolytes (before and after), you can't really judge the effect of the water. I'm a doctor btw and I agree with the expert though I would like to add some nuances... 1. In a normal individual when there is no dehydration or salt and water imbalance, you can hydrate the person with pretty much anything. Body is quite resilient to maintain its homeostasis. 2. However, if the person is dehydrated and there is salt depletion - excessive exercise, diarrhoea, heat stroke (doesn't happen at 27°C), you would prefer ORS (oral rehydration solution by WHO) as the Sodium and glucose secondary active transport in intestines drags water with it through osmosis.

The stream water is probably a very similar source to what you have in your tap unless you live in a particularly mountainous area with multiple drainage divides that feed more than 1 drinking water source. Where I live we have 4 different primary water sources that are in their own drainage divides, which means that water tastes vastly different between areas of the city, having grown up 1with one source, and moved to an area with a water source I don't particularly like, and the streams just a 30 min walk from where I live (after a lot of hills) being for another source and of water I like, so I can luckily pick up the water I do like fresh from nature. The trick when it comes to stream water, as long as you're mildly familiar with the area, such as industrialization, you primarily want to find water that is running at a decent, visible rate. Your biggest enemy is insect larvae and eggs, which don't like running water, they want it to be still, like near the banks of a not very steep decline. If the water is running at a decent speed (visibly across the full width), you might not even need a filter.

A rocky bottom to the river is even more helpful, as the rough rocky bottom helps to trap particulates and other debtis in the water as a sort of natural filter, and in some regions these rocks also add good minerals or otherwise further purify the water even more!

It's pretty cool how our body has natural notifications for when we need certain things. Bodily requirements like sleeping, eating, and drinking all have cues that we can act on. Basically being thirsty is kinda cool
@LathosZan
@LathosZan 3 года назад
I wish my body's notifications worked. I have trouble getting a proper amount of sleep because I rarely feel tired until I crash and I'm rarely thirsty. I suffer from chronic dehydration. It's difficult for me to be sure I drink enough because after a small amount water makes me feel nauseous, whether it's filtered or cleaned or whatever (it's not dirty water). I occasionally pass out, get nose bleeds, have eye pain, and have chronic dry cerumen problems. I wish just drinking when I was thirsty was enough.

These are the kinds of video people talk about when they say that "soft science" is ruining hard science. And that's not meant to be mean, you guys are learning and growing on your own, but taking a single day to experiment with types of water, light reading into coding to find out if it's biased, it's not real science.

I do a lot of hiking/backpacking (well, compared to my peers) and I had a moment with the water filter segment: 1.) The syringe-thing is actually to clean the filter, so you might want to decontaminate that before using it for it's intended purpose (or before giving it to someone else, if that's what you decided to do with it). 2.) The bag isn't entirely necessary to the filtering, it's just what they provide. I use it because it rolls up nice and saves space, but you can screw the filter over pretty much anything 3.) You don't have to squeeze the water out of the bag to filter it. One of my favorite things about that kind of filter is that it can actually be used like a straw, and you're still getting the nice, filtered water. I should note that I'm no expert (I'm barely a legal adult XD), I've just had experience with this in particular and I enjoy sharing info that makes things easier or safer for people, especially if that means there's a chance that they'll get a better experience in something they didn't think they would enjoy. I'm just a scout from the States though, so take my ramblings with however much salt you think is appropriate ^•^

So. That expert was…. Not very insightful. I’m not an expert but I can tell you a few things that can be derived from what she was saying. H2O is important for your body to stay ALIVE but not ANY water addresses thirst. Thirst itself happens for a variety of reasons, only one being not consuming enough water. One of those is dry mouth which drinks with high tannins (juice, tea, coffee; make your mouth feel dry afterwards) can lead to thirst. Additionally some of those drinks also are diuretics(including carbonated drinks), which means they either irritate or stimulate your body to pee more. Which can offset that balance between water and salt she referenced, making you thirsty. So even though you consumed it, it goes out much quicker as well. This is also why if you suddenly start drinking water more than normal you might feel like you’re peeing ‘all the time’ because you’re throwing off that balance, so your body makes you pee. Additionally, with things like sweating you’re losing salt, so, hydrating with a bunch of tap water is not in balance. That’s why a lot of sports drinks are salty and have electrolytes. So it kind of does matter what and when you drink as to how well it will make you not thirsty.

This video annoyed me. The first 2/3 of the video, Melissa's experiment offers no value in answering how hydrating water is. No attempts to control variables and hydration was measured anecdotally. Also it seemed like coffee was the main hydrator for the first half of each day. For Dr. Hew-Butler's section I think she misunderstood the question. I interpret most hydrating as what percentage of the water will your body hold on to. For example sea water is extremely bad for hydration as your body will use more water than was input trying to filter the salt.

@emilymartin5418
@emilymartin5418 3 года назад
Water filters (like the Sawyer Squeeze used in the video) remove dirt, contaminants, bacteria, and protozoa, so definitely no tapeworms. They can't filter out viruses because viruses are too small, so in areas where that is a risk you need chemical or UV purification too. And you just dunk the whole bag in the water source to fill it. The syringe Melissa used is for back-flushing with clean water every now and then to push all the captured dirt back out the bottom. Or you can run the filter under a tap when you get back to civilisation, holding the drinking end up the the tap and letting the clean water flow backwards through the filter. Melissa's syringe has unfiltered water in it now, so it needs to be cleaned out before being used. I know you might not be interested in that, but if anyone else is scrolling through, now they'll see the safety info.

I have a fucked microbiome, so I have to have half of my water alkaline because of my overacidity, as well as at least one glass of carbonated water a day to stay comfortable and not nauseated/vomity. If I could, I would drink only carbonated water. It helps my dry mouth and asthma legit so much. Unless it's too carbonated (like a newly opened can of coke); then it launches me into hiccups - for me, similar to what spicy food does, hiccupingwise - that makes me vomit from the jostling and exertion. Yeah. I do burp a lot.

There is an Asterix on "they all do the same thing" because both alcohol and caffeine are diuretics which cause the body to lose water through urination. Electrolytes also cause the cells to absorb more water, which usually causes the cells to function better but results in less water in the bloodstream. So while you are still absorbing them the same amount it is very important to remember that they are not necessarily staying in the body for the same amount of time

Maybe this is obvious, but… Tap water has insane variation between different cities. Some are strangely chlorinated. Some have clear taste of minerals. Some have have very minimal taste. So for example if taste has any effect of perceived de-hydration, that factor alone has huge variation between different tap water sources.
