I tried a S'more Maker!

There's nothing better than toasting a marshmallow over a fire (well, unless it's raining or you don't like marshmallows)... upgrade it even more to a s'more - essentially a toasted marshmallow that grips two pieces of biscuit (normally graham crackers) together whilst melting a piece of chocolate for a super good toasted treat.... however, Aldi have brought out an indoor only electric one for a fair price of £29, is it worth it? Let's find out and also see if it does other foods too!

I wanted to dislike this appliance, it really is more of a heater, but with the right marshmallows it did a job, if it was a tortilla toaster with fajita ingredients in the pockets i'd probably have liked it more though! Anyhow, thanks so much for watching, if you'd like to see more videos like this, take a look at the playlist of other kitchen gadget testing right here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-olFYfhtScR4.html

Mister, if I'm going into Aldi and come out with shovel and a tent- things have gone horribly wrong. 😆 You have a stove. You have that steam powered thing, too. I'd just brown 'em over the flame (or, use a lighter), stuff 'em in the microwave, and let nature take its course.

I've used electric stovetops like that, but they actually get red hot and they worked great. I could make a perfect golden brown marshmallow in a few seconds on high. This just doesn't seem to have the power for some reason, prolly safety XD

I agree, if you watch the one that he dropped on the plate itself, it only JUST starts turning brown after he's already done the large one and then onto the third smaller one.
@jodivandyk3649

I think this gadget was defective. A red element would mean that it was hotter, letting the marshmallow brown on the outside before the inside melts to the point it falls off the fork. The bigger marshmallow meant that it took more time to heat the inside. Think I'll stick with a campfire. Thanks for the fun video!
@KeithShelton
@KeithShelton 2 года назад
My daughter has one similar to the one you are trying. Hers has a fairly quiet fan below the element and makes it, effectively, a heat gun. She gets beautifully browned and crisped marshmallows from it every time. Of note is that the elements on hers get furiously red. perhaps yours is just not getting hot enough due to some defect.

It sounded like something happened to the heating element when it was heating up. (that popping sound.) And possibly why it was not getting red hot like it should have. Defective in my opinion. I would return it and get another to try it again.
@jessicaconda4825
@jessicaconda4825 2 года назад
Well technically, it is a smores maker because to make a smore, you toast a marshmallow and add it to non heated chocolate and Graham crackers/biscuit. So the only thing your heating is the marshmello. Which it does. I agree with several other comments in that it was probably defective though, given you could get better results from a candle (which I've done, since apartments aren't equipped with gas stoves)
@TuxLetsPlay
@TuxLetsPlay 2 года назад
Did the heating elemens ever turn red? Because honestly, seeing how long you had to put everything on/over it, I'm suspecting maybe you just got a defective unit or something that didn't generate enough heat. Or all of them are like that, idk :D

@Middleagersviewreviewuk
@Middleagersviewreviewuk 2 года назад
I think yours is faulty, due to the element not going red. We have one and it literally takes 30-40 seconds. It does take a good five minds to heat up. So you might be able to take it back because it doesn’t work as it’s meant to, so won’t be an issue with the spillage on it

I think the difference between the small and large marshmallows was that marshmallows are coated in a sugary powder, and the little ones had gone all sticky, so the sugar didn't caramelise. The bigger ones were not sticky so the sugar could caramelise quickly. If you had a fresh pack of small marshmallows it might have gone browner like everything else.

I prefer my smores over a camp fire, but a microwave does do a quick job. I can't remember all the recipes you've done, but if you haven't tried "Smores Dip" it is delicious. Want the Recipe? Here you go... . Smores Dip Put chocolate chips in a oven safe skillet. Bake preheated oven (I'm American, so it's 350 °F) until chocolate is melted, take out and add marshmallows on top of the chocolate. Return to oven till marshmallows are browned. Serve immediately with graham crackers, cookies, or whatever you want. Warning: may be messy (but that's ok) Milk chocolate works really well, but you can use what ever chocolate you like.

I personally like making s'mores in the oven. Place your graham cracker, chocolate, and marshmallow on a baking tray and let it sit under the broiler until the marshmallow is brown (if you put the top graham cracker in too, it will get toasted with everything as well). Easy peasy and you can make a whole bunch at once.
@JennL919
@JennL919 2 года назад
I do it similarly to this. I put down the two graham cracker halves, split the marshmallow in the middle with the gooey side up, then broil until it gets all bubbly and caramelized, take out, put the chocolate on top of one and make the sandwich. Maximizes the gooey:caramel ratio lol

Top tip next time you're making s'mores use the chocolate leibniz biscuits you get in the supermarket. The biscuits are much closer to Graham crackers and they already have the perfect amount of chocolate on there to melt under the heat of the marshmallow!

Toasted marshmallows are what they want. It's like toast. It's a nice browning, a little bit of crispness. Toasted is an important distinction from "catch it on fire and let it burn" marshmallow. Gummy blackened bits of burnt marshmallow happens when you fail to successfully make a toasted marshmallow aren't "good char." They're "bad mistake." Luckily, you can hide it with a graham cracker and chocolate, but if the marshmallow burns, you messed up.

Speak for yourself, sir. The best way to toast a marshmallow on a fire is to let it just barely catch fire, then blow it out immediately.
@pdughi
@pdughi 2 года назад
@@Godkarmachine You need to slowly toast it, by the time it's becoming slightly brown and a little crisp on the outside, the inside should be so liquid that you can't keep it on the stick anymore. Fire makes that nice crispness into a gummy mess that separates from the rest of the marshmallow meaning it's cold and tough instead of soft and oozing.

It's possible that the larger marshmallows are coated with something that browns more quickly than the smaller marshmallows. American-style marshmallows tend to be coated in corn starch as an anti-sticking agent.

I think the coating on the smaller marshmallows is what made it flop. They have a sort of crust on them that doesn't really melt so the inside melts and the crust ends up falling off and it and it all falls to pieces. Whereas the giant marshmallows don't really have that, they're sprinkled with sugar which could be why they were able to caramelise better. And I also agree with a lot of other commenters that maybe your machine was faulty, it just didn't seem like it was getting hot enough!
@aspry91

With the big marshmallows, you can put a piece of chocolate inside of the marshmallow before toasting it. Then you have pre melted chocolate and it's easier to just grab the marshmallows with the biscuits.

The center of the marshmallow might have heated up quicker because the exposed metal of the fork was over the heating element, getting that hot. Thus the heat went up the fork and into the marshmallow and heated it up from the inside and making it start to droop while it was still firm cool on the outside.

It's always wild to hear Barry talk about Aldi's like it's some high end grocery store. In the US (at least in my experience) Aldi's has always been a sketchy low end store on par with Save A Lot. Miserable staffing, rotten produce, expired meat, boxed food that's been opened by customers and the constant feeling of "Someone's gonna jump me, gotta get out fast." It's just not a place you go unless you have absolutely no other options.

If you have a broiler element in your oven, try this: Turn on your broiler. Take a piece of aluminum foil and bend up the edges to make a flimsy pan (for ease of cleanup as well as heat reflective properties). Place your marshmallows on the aluminum foil with a bit of space between each one and put the whole business under your broiler. You have to keep your eye on them to watch for optimal browning, but it usually only takes about 3-4 minutes (if that). Toasted marshmallow perfection, every time.
