Mountain House was my go-to backpacking food. It's been around for DECADES. I always carried some salt and spices. Chilly mac was one that required some extra cooking. However, I seem to remember Mountain House way back when as having a cheese packet you added after cooking.
they have decent tasting stuff, but for what you get (especially nowadays) it's a bit expensive. My Patriot Supply has some Ok tasting stuff that is more affordable and offers a lot more than just emergency foods. their 2,400 calorie ration bars are surprisingly tasty. if you want great tasting emergency foods, valley food storage and especially nutrient survival.
To be fair the ready wise is a 25 year shelf life while the peak is 5 years which probably would explain the lack of flavor. One is for prepping the other is for camping or hiking crap like that.
i can literally sit here and watch this dude review staplers STAPLERS and i was literally entertained the whole time tyler is my for real favorite youtuber he keeps it real and straight to the point lol
@@BlackMoonHowls nor are they healthier, they're all like 3000+ calories from what I remember and mostly carbs for fuel with little fat or protein. Great when you're in the field for weeks, horrible if you are just trying to survive day to day
@@warzone895 then thats fucked up expensive. I can buy a 4 portion one for about 18 dollars. And its pretty good. Not like home cooking good, but not extremly off. Its good enough for a few weeks without being so boring you rather starve. But I also can buy 4 portions for 1 month for 250 bucks ish. So 10 bucks per 1 portion? Thats crazy
I was thinking the same thing and it honestly was aggravating me in the most mildest of ways since, he could of just put a piece of paper in front of the bowls to also show which one is which or get color coded bowls or something to see which was which since, he clearly didn't see that the R wasn't an R or the P wasn't A P either 🤣
Tyler should get a freeze dryer and experiment with it, always a fun time freeze drying things like candy, meats, fruits... pretty much anything comes out strange and sometimes good AF.
@@Random-ed2xf Very true, they are quite expensive. I would hope he could recover some of that investment if the videos were popular. I know *TKOR* The King of Random made some videos awhile back on freeze drying and they were quite interesting and popular as well
@@mattferrigno9750 depends, just want to point out that on the used market these still go for fairly close to new. If we're being realistic, it would be closer to around $500 after selling it. Probably wouldn't be hard to get rid of either if it's not been heavily used. EDIT: I also remembered it could be written off as a business expense as well, so that'll kinda drive the price tag down even further.
@@paulghignon4092 Yeah in reality he could definitely benefit from it. He would likely make back the cost and then some within a couple videos using it. Plus they are quiet handy if you're the independent type and something tells me he is.
@@johngalt2506 Nope never had the omelet, but had the C Ration ham and eggs, I think I was one of the few Marines that really liked it. LOL. But then again, I grew up with the rule if your mom took time to cook it, you'd better eat wither you liked it or not and ask for 2nd's. Dads' rules LOL
I would look also at the shelf life as a consideration because if your using it for backpacking meals peak would be ok with a 5 year shelf life. But if your wanting something for emergency food Mountain House has a 30 year shelf life and Readywise coming in a 25 years or more they say.
@@Storytelling35 It is. Peak is a Camping food with max 5 year Shelf life thus more flavor can be added and retained. Mountain House has a shelf life of 25-30 years and has only slightly less flavoring, for obvious reasons. One is obviously better here if were speaking on survival.
"Thanks for watching, I'm going to go finish these 15 different meals that I made for myself, and I'll make another video when I can talk without puking." - Tyler (probably)
I use Mountain House and they work well. Never found the Stroganoff as bland really. Maybe not inundated in flavor but tasted pretty good. Blindfold really does not matter for this sort of test as they all are different. In the end they are good for for hiking. One thing I noticed is to use less water about 2/3 to 3/4 what is described to do. My gf loves the Mountain house lasagna.. so best to go less water otherwise too watery and can bland it
Imagine seeing a mushroom cloud in the distance than the last thought that goes through your head is, I'm just glad my balls are shaved and covered in sea salt
@@teddylfiolyordan8775 Brother I have felt the pain of that cut on many a date night trying to clean up quick. That razor is pretty bad ass.It has not cut me yet and I have bumped them before.I would just suggest the razor. All the creams and lotions don't really smell good and you don't need them. They just have funny names. That razor is waterproof also.Very convenient.
For the first test, the “P” (for Peak) and the “R” (for Readywise) bowls are reversed. The letters you wrote on the bottom don’t match. We can see it right at the beginning of the video, when you flip them upside down. The Mountain House was correct.
While you are correct about the letters at the beginning (I caught that as well). He actually seems to get it right. I think he realized (and switched them) and was hoping we wouldn't.
I find it interesting you pick peak everytime. I used to eat peak until I tried Mountain House and I thought it blew peak out of the water. Peaks packaging is also junk, I had multiple peak bags leak all over in my pack.
MRE's are really expensive compared to the freeze dried stuff. To have a years worth for two people would be prohibitive as far as the price goes. That being said I do have two cases of MRE's.
On one hand, I can understand Tyler's criticism on the taste, on the other, in a situation where you actually need this stuff, you'll eat it because it's food. Taste becomes secondary when you need it to survive.
If it taste bad enough you will not eat it. I found every product from AlpineAire taste so bad I have never been able to get past more than a couple of bites
They are not meant to be perfect , they are for emergencies. , the longer you go without food the better food taste once you eat , I went several days without food b4 , once I got food it tasted like heaven.
Considering peak’s meals only last a measly 5 years I’d go with mountainhouse. I bought a 1 year supply of freeze dried food from them about 6 years back and it doesn’t expire until 2052. And I think they taste amazing.
I was pretty shocked by your results. I have only ever had Mountain House and Peak but for me all of the Peak meals I have had left a terrible chemical type aftertaste in my mouth. my only complaint with the Mountain house ones is that they are pretty salty.
You should probably keep some of the ones you don't like in your emergency supply too. (you can trade them to desperate people for stuff you might need) if they're hungry they won't care as much about the flavor. Also maybe the ones with less flavor could be fixed with some spices. IDK. Does one brand have more nutritional value? That might be important in a survival situation? I think I'm going to try this sample test with a few different brands of survival food too.
Fun fact everyone thinks MachineGunKelly's song "Rap Devil" was a diss track aimed at Eminem, but in fact when MGK said "your beard is weird" he was referring to our boy here at TylerTube and Eminem made a diss track responding called "KillShot" because he foolishly thought it was about him and didn't want to become irrelevant..... LMAO 😂😂😂 #TheMoreYouKnow #SpreadTheDisinformation
Even when I do eat these things, or an MRE, always have salt, pepper, Tabasco, Tony Chachere's....something. these are camping and survival meals not gourmet cooking.
I just saw these for the first time today at a truck stop in Wyoming. Peak was selling for eight bucks a bag and I wondered who would pay that? Backpackers.
Any one noticed he he put the wrong food in the wrong bowl he put the peak in the r one and the readywise in the p one you can see it at 01:04 and 02:03
Can you do a rich man freeze dried food end of world. Check out backpackers pantry, pack it gourmet, and Patagonia provisions . Pack it gourmet makes really good meals.
@@Astrologus-Auctrix the best chicken alfredo i've had so far (that wasn't homemade) was from the frozen section at walmart lol. Fazolis, olive garden and dominos are all pretty good too... depending on who's working there / what time it is.
Love watching Tyler. I wonder how these are after a 4 hour hike when your taste buds are drained. The semi-bland probably tastes a lot better whereas the normal tasting one could be "heavy" tasting.
Think you got em mixed up at the end there. The one you dumped with “peas & carrots” was the adventure meal and that would be the one you said was best but I think I heard you call it peak instead. Much love brother keep em coming!
Me and my dad would always test MREs too and mountain house is the best! I would make them when I just wanted something quick to eat! The spaghetti is really good.
I appreciate this video. I've learned through trial and error that 4patriots is really good for freeze dried foods. Best I can remember. Certainly better than USMC MRE's. Won't stop you up either. 😁
Ready Wise is like $5-$6 less than Peak and about $3-$4 less than Mountain just stating I've had all three and found ready is not awful it's something I could eat, but Peak does have the most flavor
Here is my problem with these reviews... Price and Shelf Life?? If I'm eating any of these "and not backpacking" my concern is going to be volume of food and calories for the dollar. I bought 12-148 (About 28,000 Calories per bucket) serving bucket of ReadyWise on sale at Midway for $79 per bucket with a 25 year shelf life. On Sale at Midway for $110 you can get a Peak bucket with about 10,000 Calories and a 5 year shelf life. Along with my "survival" food I have all kinds of spices to "season to taste" plus additional can veggies and canned meat to add to them plus multiple buckets of rice and bean.
Tyler I hope you did not find that invisible spoon outside...apparently Wonder Woman throws them out of her invisible jet when she is done which makes her a litter bug in my books.
Peak is more flavorful but also the most expensive ($15 vs $10 for Mountain House or ReadyWise). If you only had $30 to spend would you rather have two Peak dinners or three MH or RW's? In a survival situation I'd rather go for quantity and bring my own Tabasco, salt and pepper and make the cheap stuff taste "gourmet".
@@Gloryyyyyyyy by "scientific", I mean keeping everything neutral and uniform for the testing. Having a clean untensil would be a more scientific approach than just going at it the way he did.
@@briangereau788 i’m sorry bro no. This is just basic kitchen stuff that he’s choosing not to do. Not that it matters lol it is nice to air my grievances in the comment section and be heard 😭
@@Gloryyyyyyyy I'm sorry sis, but yes. The informal definition of scientific is: systematic; methodical. "how many people buy food in an organized, scientific way?" This is literally in the Oxford dictionary. The word "scientific" can be used to discuss anything. It has to do with how someone goes about something. It doesn't literally need to be related to "science".
I am kind of wondering if this test was not really that valid because he used the same spoon when going between each bowl and didn’t clean it and there was obvious food left on it when he went to the second bowl or the third bowl. Meaning he was kind of mixing the flavors.
The 2nd round was very odd. you spun the lazy Susan and then skipped to them on the spread. Feel like this was a ad for Peak, and you never disused price differences which is HUGE on factoring value/shelf life/cost. Tyler... Come on man...
Blind test doesn't mean you wear a blindfold. Blind test means you know nothing about the multiple products (sight, smell, brand, etc) then when it's placed in front of you, you're literally "blind" even without a blindfold... This could easily have been biased
IIf I am correct all three can be used for back packing but only two are marketed for prep and one marketed primarily for backpacking but has a 30 year taste guarantee. Peak is backpacking food that I think lasts 5 years though obviously in the right conditions these foods dont just become poison but rather loose taste and nutrition after their life. MH is marketed for both with a 30 year guarantee. And RW is considered more of a prep food I think but I believe with that same 30 years...
Now why didn't you test out any of the emergency foods that are made in the United States, you didn't test all the componys so, in my opinion that is not a true test, I've been trying out emergency foods and I like behond foods and read Hour, I've also been trying out the military MREs
I used to use the Mountain House stuff a long time ago when I did remote camping. Not bad but not great, but it was the only way to eat when having to carry all your gear long distance. Better than nothing
I'm confused why so many of the reviews focus on taste rather than nutrient density cook time etc....things that would actually matter in a survival scenario.
