I Tried Amazon's Weird Knock-Off Art Supply Brand..(can't believe these are real)

Not just diapers, bezos first did it with books, he put so many book stores out of business the exact same way.

I just really hope prismas dont get shut down the same way

The thing about Amazon is that they'll beat out all the competition, and then once they're the only place you can go, watch the quality drop and the prices go up.

Amazon does this a lot and it makes me sad. While I love the convenience of Amazon- they constantly steal ideas from small/medium sized businesses and make them into “Amazon basics” totally undersells it and then that original business ends up going under.

It wasn't a petty move. It was evil and technically illegal.

It's not just Prisma they're taking business from, but other companies like Arteza.

FYI... The Amazon Basics colors are identical to the Marco Raffine' 72 piece set. I have them both, and did a side by side color chart. Same numbers even. The only difference, besides their names, is that the Marco Raffine' pencils are oil-based, and the Amazon Basics set is wax based. I don't know if anyone else told you, and I wanted you to know. 🙂

The one thing that prismacolor has that no other pencil company has, and can’t replicate, is their color range. They have the best color range of ANY colored pencil set.

Having people very close to me who worked for amazon for a lengthy period of time, they spoke of this extensively... literally all the amazon products (not always named amazon basics) are 100% sourced from pre-existing supply chains. They may direct them to cut costs (use a cheaper pigment option, cheaper wood, poly blend instead of cotton, etc.) but otherwise it is often made in the exact same factory/a factory owned by the same people, with the exact same materials/same material supply chain, before being packaged differently. So yes, the problem with this is what you pointed out... basically a cannibalization of every possible industry in order to control the supply. It costs money to hire product developers, packaging designers, product testing, etc. and they pass the savings that came from ripping off the design/formulation of a company's final product on to... well a little to you (just enough to get you to buy it, and not a penny more) but the rest to bezos. I'd pass on these--if for no other reason than feeling like part of my soul was dying having to look at 'amazon' on an art supply while I was using it... There is also the very legitimate fear that as he crushes existing companies and narrows down your options, that product innovation dies and they can then degrade the quality of the products they're offering once you're stuck with no other options. Which is scary and... gives me that uncomfortable feeling you mentioned... :')

I have completed my four week lightfast test! And I am here to say that amazon basics coloured pencils are not lightfast. Though they fade a lot less than I expected. It's like a 25-30% fading in the four weeks in my windowsill, so, now we know for certain.

Okay the initial story is actually pretty shocking to me... We have laws in Germany that forbid these practices, one if the reasons Walmart never stuck around here. It's horrifying, really

They can be as good as you say... It will last till they get prismacolor out of market. Then it will turn into shit and you wont have a choice.

Love comparative videos like this, they are very helpful. So far, the price difference is so minuscule though that I'd rather pay the little bit extra for the better quality product and support those manufacturers instead of helping Bezos with his world domination plan that will ultimately wipe out the competition and deprive us all of the option of the better quality products.

I really don't care, I don't support Amazon's monopolizing the planet and power seeking strategy. Even if they were better than prisma I would buy prisma again tbh. I get that amazon basics are helpful for people who can't afford art supplies tho.

Thanks 4 covering the Bezos topic. My Grandfather who was born in 1900 predicted and refused to shop at any potential chain stores because he was a wise man. We all need to attempt 2 support the family owned stores and not b too harsh on those that can’t afford 2 do it full x. As long as we r doing the best we can don’t b too hard on each other.

I’ve actually started finding items cheaper elsewhere online then on Amazon, I dunno why but certain products seem to be higher in price now then they used to. I’m guessing Amazon can make them higher then elsewhere because they offer next day free shipping

I appreciate your work on comparing these art supplies and I respect your opinion... HOWEVER, something in my gut just won't let me give Bezos any more money than I already do. I already buy most of my stuff from Amazon and Dick Blick's Art Supply, but I buy brands that are sooo not Amazon brands. It is unfortunate that Amazon has become so big because as you have said, it has pushed smaller companies out of business as with the diaper people! The free shipping that Amazon offers really makes a huge difference in most cases. Of course, don't forget that shipping costs are added in to the basic cost of the products in the case of heavy things like gallon jugs of alcohol or big glue bottles, etc. Anyway, that's my 2 cents worth!

My first guess is that they're actually Mitsubishi pencils. They are sold like crazy in Japan and are also really cheap and have still great quality. It also gives a really strange feeling seeing a car brand on a pencil :D

I would always rather support a 'good' art supply company than get something basic. And really, in these times, the power needs to be distributed. Even in the art supply companies.

Selling products at a loss has been a fairly common retail strategy for many years. I do, however, wonder how they were able to sell them in the state of Tennessee (and possibly some other states as well) as the state of Tennessee has a law prohibiting any retailer from selling a product at a lower price than cost. This practice is known as "loss leaders" and generally are used by retailers to get new customers into their store. Great video, as always!

i know prismsacolor is also owned by a billion dollar company but i’d rather buy from them any day than give money to a man who is worth almost half of prismacolor’s parent company’s entire worth. no one needs that much money in my opinion

I definitely prefer the colors from prisma better than the Amazon colors that you put to the page. So the Amazon ones may feel nice and blend well but the prisma colors definitely are more vibrant more intense and more lush looking

I've had those pencils for nearly half a year thanks to this video, and I don't have any complaints. They are great pencils. I'm doing my own lightfast test and so far they're doing very nicely. I did upgrade to a caran d'ache luminance white pencil because the white pencil just didn't do it for me, but it's good if I need a blender. Otherwise I'm very happy since I've gotten it, they don't break when I sharpen them, they go over everything I use them on (watercolours, markers, poscas, even crayons if I use hairspray on top of it), and they are soft enough to blend but not so soft that I can't do details. These are great pencils for beginner artists to learn off of. I am considering upgrading to the polychromos at some point, but I still love these pencils

Love the Bezos/Lex Luther bit. Had to watch this for entertainment. I’m primarily a digital artist, but I’m trying to get back into hand drawing. A lot of my art has to do with dismantling power structures… so I definitely couldn’t live with seeing Amazon on my art supplies. Since I’m not ready to sell my soul, I dropped $125 on a Prismacolor set. I know it will pay off in the end!

I’m trying not to give Lex Luther anymore of my money than possible. I can’t stand his desire to take over the world. I will pay more for my color pencils and stick with Prisma.

I will never buy anything from Amazon. If I can't get it in a local store I don't need it. I know me taking my business local is just a drop in the bucket, however if more people do it some of our local business will stay and prevent a complete monopoly on everything allowing Amazon to JACKUP prices once there are no other options.

Another thing, I thought I was bad at coloring until you mentioned prisma colors were your favorite colored pencils and I got some for myself and I absolutely love them!! Thank you for your videos, to you its what you do but it helps me alot inspiration wise and I use some of the supplies you recommend!

However, I have a lot of problems with Amazon and art supply stores are already an endangered species so no. I’ll shell out the extra money for Prismacolors

I was thinking, there is no way I would recommend Amazon Basics, rather than Prismacolor. Firstly, it would put me off that Amazon crushes small companies out of greed and spite. I think he did the same with an art supply business. Creating art shouldn't be done with something so evil. Yup, you heard me. I used the E word. Secondly, the downside you mentioned over the pigmentation would seriously ruin any artwork. I wouldn't recommend a person starting out, or even doing art as a hobby, use inferior quality tools. Save up and buy the quality tools. I believe there is only a $20 difference, so get the artist quality. Thirdly, Amazon will start out providing a reasonable quality knock-off, but I bet the quality will subtly go down to increase their profit margins. My final point is you are making a profit from recommending Amazon...

9:11, Yeah, but a thin barrel uses less wood so it's more eco-friendly -Wait actually not really cause then they'll break and you'll have to buy more, using more wood than a slightly thicker barrel would.

I think it's problematic to start off the video explaining how problematic Amazon is, showing that they're trying to put other businesses into bankruptcy by stealing their customers, then proceeding to recommend and endorse them. You're acknowledge the problem then proceed to support it, with affiliate links in the description....

Great video! Thank you for this. I've gotten some Amazon color pencils too. One thing that I don't think you pointed out is that Amazon's do flake more than Prismacolor. At one point you had to blow away the little flakes. I had to do the same a lot. Amazon's are ok-smooth, & opaque, & blendable, but I noticed that they seem to have a lower pigment count, & they're more brittle (easier for the leads to break inside the pencil). & there's little flakes everywhere.

If she's bad for recommending the products and using an affiliate link, how bad am I as an actual employee of a fulfillment center 🤣🤣
