Exactly this! Etsy is getting more filled with dropshippers and resellers whilst at the same time actual small businesses drop out because of the high fees, Etsy holding their funds for no good reason and there are even accounts of Etsy blocking small business owners out of their own shops. Its sad to see and hear all those stories

some other good art channels are tenhundred, moriah elizabeth, drawfee, doodle date, rose requin etc. I have many art channels that i go back to.

They seem like particularly energetic people who’ve maybe got family to help, and employees. People do start alone and it’s a lot to do, I guess some manage it.

But I have ADHD so getting myself through one day of tasks I'm not super into is a struggle, so I think how many tasks would come up in running a business that I wouldn't really want to do, and I know I would fail pretty much right out of the gate. Cause, like, I would love to quit my job, sell my art online & make 7 figures a year. But there is just no way 😂

​@@FelineFurKin i recently came across videos from Emily Cromwell...I think that's her last name...on here. She basically runs her business on her own with her mom sometimes coming to help...but it's mainly her. The first video I saw titled about 600 sales in 11hrs...I was exhausted just watching her work. I do believe it was a shopify shop she has but still....small business with no employees or real help. Plus, she also has ehlers danlos syndrome, so not exactly 100% health. As an artist and maker myself I could only imagine how tired she must be right now.

They typically have a team of people running stuff, not just the owner/founder. Typically the team is comprised of family and friends and aquaintances, it seems.

I’m not sure if you are familiar with my content but I have always been for supporting small business. Ive promoted MANY in videos over the years. One of the first Etsy videos I ever made was a dedicated video featuring a Pottery business with under 50 sales at the time. I have made many Etsy videos in the past supporting small business with all kinds of sale numbers. Big and small. Just because I did one video supporting bigger shops doesn’t mean I haven’t publicly and privately supported smaller ones. This is the first time in a video I’ve gone out of my way to look for the bigger stores to see why they are as successful as they are. They’re still small businesses regardless and just because they hit a certain threshold doesn’t mean they aren’t worthy of promoting too. I have many plans and ideas for future content on both Etsy and other places to support small business. And yes, I am well aware not only small businesses are on Etsy. That’s why I supported small business exclusively in this video.

I get that! In some ways it’s good in the sense more people can get their hands on your artwork (if it’s on a product, something small or cheaper like a sticker or tape) but as you say it’s very hard to start. I think it’s flattering for many artists that people want to buy products with their artwork on it. Sometimes people don’t want just canvases or prints but something they can use that is made better by being made pretty by an artist. :) I think that’s why many people start with stickers because they can make them at home or get smaller quantities. I know with my paintbrush line my manufacturer doesn’t have a bulk discount so I have to pay the same price if I bought 50 or 5000. Starting a small business can be very expensive!

I guess it helps to make much cheaper, useful things rather than paintings and even prints that can be quite pricy and are less useful.
