Well, because in Japan, most people who talk to strangers like this are either religious or scammers. No wonder they are suspicious. Besides, most of the foreigners in this video probably already knew him. He is somewhat well known to foreigners, but totally unknown to the Japanese.

As a half Japanese myself, in regards to making friends with Japanese people, I think the reason you kept getting rejected is due to your initial approach. Your first line, "do you want to be my friend!?" can seem too abrupt, without any context explaining Why you want to be friends. I think if you approach them casually, introducing yourself and that you're looking for more Japanese friends, and Then inviting them to your party, I feel you would've gotten more approvals.
@NO1xANIMExFAN
@NO1xANIMExFAN 2 месяца назад
lmao no it would've barely mattered... the issue is that it takes time for Japanese people to even be comfortable to be your friend, much less visit your house on the first day you meet them.

OMG I mean ur not actually becoming good friends here but by asking "would u like to be my friend" you're instantly breaking the ice and making yourself very vulnerable - its a high risk high reward strategy and some people definitely would love to make friends by just being asked.

That was super cool idea, and how it developed in the end. I guess by you being a 'famous' youtuber people were more friendly, but it shows many things about the japanese society. And if would be 10x harder if i was in the rural area of Japan, but worked greatly in Tokyo.

When you come up all of a sudden to unsuspecting strangers and ask them to be your friend, you sound weird and creepy. Instead, you should've told them your objective. "Hi, my name's Jess. I'm trying to see if I can have a Japanese friends today. Would you be my friend?' "I'll be hosting a party for all of my new friends tonight. Would you be down to attend?" That's how you do it.
