Was looking for at least one comment that said this lmao, like bro “Spider-Man is making jokes during a fight to the death?” Yeah man that’s his whole thing 😭
Spider-Man cracking cringe jokes in the heat of battle is one of the most Spider-Man things Spider-Man can do. It’s completely in character. Not making him more like Tom Holland’s version. It’s just what Peter Parker does. I don’t get how that’s a complaint…
dont claim to be an expert but i think the reason he does it is because he's nervous/scared every time he has to be spiderman so joking around is his defense response. like his human spider sense.
@@kluneberg8952Peter's jokes serve multiple purposes it is a defense mechanism plus he knows how to get into enemies heads annoying them to the point it effects their fighting
It's the kind of fan who don't realize that these characters existed before the MCU. Besides, Spider-Man is SUPPOSED to make cringe jokes, the whole point is to annoy his enemies.
24:40 that basically is Spider-Man. He's usually doing this because it annoys the people he's up against and actually calms him down a bit. IIRC (it might be this game) there is a bit of dialogue where Peter and Miles are like "Wow. We really should not be joking right now.", but I feel like the opening hours of this game are going to crank it up to 11 because the Symbiote has been inducing radical mood swings in Peter since the 90's animated series. So, a good bit of our time with this game will be dealing with a VERY angry Peter.
It's crazy how he associated this with Tom Holland only because the MCU (and TASM) were the only ones that captured that quirky, trash talking style of Spider Man in the movies lol
Regarding spider man being so quippy and cracking jokes. Yes he did it just as much in the first game. It is what it is. Personally i love it and i think insomniac spider man is the perfect blend of maguire, garfield and holand.
@hardhitter5099 yeah this marvelification he's talking about is more like spider-man-ification, marvel trying to get everyone to quip like spider man. He has it back to front.
To add to Spider-Man quips. Spider-Man does it as a stress relief , yes, but its also his go to way to distract villains so civilians can get away. That part is the most under represented.
I have a voice acting background and have to say that Yuri Lowenthal's performance has been such an inspiration for me since the Prince of Persia Trilogy. The vocal training was really tough, sometimes without noticeable results for months but actors like him and the late Kevin Conroy are a great impulse to not give up. You almost saw me as Leon in those new RE games :)
@@LucidOreo Hi. I'm still struggling with it and haven't done anything really substantial. If you're interested in pursuing it I would say that any acting school is your best bet. Doing vocal exercises at home is also great. There's this exercise I like; put a wine cork between your teeth and read out loud any text you can find; poems, songs, books etc.
I think troy baker is really great inspiration, I don't even voice act but he can sound like a normal guy, Joel from tlou and then deeper with pain voice from naruto
Spider man cracking jokes is so in character that spider man 2018 had a suit mod where the only thing it did was let you quip mid fight…..and it was one of the best mods in the whole game 😶
He blames marvel, but what he doesn't say is that Spiderman IS the quippy joke guy. He is the Character that started the entire trend. If you are ever wondering why cerrainmedia has so much jokes instead of seriousness it started at spiderman, its basically his thing
@@ibbyseed as someone who has never touched a comic book even for me it’s incredibly common knowledge that Spider-Man is and always has been the quip guy. It’s his thing
Spider-Man cracks jokes to hide how scared and afraid he is fighting criminals and villains. He also uses these jokes to annoy villains so they will be blinded by anger making it easier for him to stop them. This game is amazing so far. I love the new version of the Advanced Suit and the opening Sandman level was really impressive and showcased how fantastic the set pieces are in this game. The web gliding slingshot and water surfing mechanics are really great and make the traversal so much more satisfying and fluid. The games version of New York is stunning and the improved graphics make every frame look magnificent.
Dude spider man is known for doing quips he’s so powerful and when he’s in control of the situation he’s cracking jokes because he’s confident no one’s getting hurt. Also he uses quips as form of taunt to draw the attention to him and away from the victims. In general it’s a part of his character. Prior to the release of this game, I watched all the Sam rami films and the amazing spider man 2. Tobi M was making quips all the time and he was the most serious of all the film spider men.
If you've ever seen a Spiderman movie or read a Spiderman comic, you would know that cracking stupid jokes during fights has always been a part of his character.
Spider-man cracking jokes is actually a tactic he uses to distract his enemies. He does it all the time in the comics and has been since his creation in the 60s. Characters even find him annoying because of it like wolverine. It's not just something from Tom Holland and Andrew Garfield's Spider-man movies, he actually does make cringey quippy jokes all the time. It's his entire character because it's a defense tactic and also a coping mechanism. The only non-quippy Spider-man is Tobey's Spider-man which otherwise it's who the character is. And as far as accurate depictions of the character Insomniac definitely has the most accurate.
Tobey was quippy, he just didnt have as much charisma, but the quips were there lol. Youre the one whos out gobby… out of your mind! Thats a cute outfit did your husband make it for you? Kiddo let mom and dad talk for a minute
@@undisputedchamp4317they wre there but very far and few like 2 or 3 quips per movie. Most of his fights were either silence or serious. For that reason I wouldn't really call him quippy because if he's quippy then so is batman because Keaton and Bale had a few quips in the movies and even Conroy in the animated series and the arkham games.
It’s been commonly observed that the WORST thing that can happen to you is for Spider-Man to get SO pissed that he stops quipping. That’s when he’s about to seriously kick your ass!
Tobey was quippy, there just wasn’t as much focus on it. Plus like 70% of the fights in those movies occur in situations where he’s super focused and not in the mood for jokes (see the train scene in the 2nd movie. He’s absolutely PISSED during that fight).
My favorite thing so far is surprisingly the side content. At least for me in 2018 the side content was way to repetitive and I ended up skipping it all after awhile. However, here in the sequel they have integrated it so perfectly that I am hooked
I went to do my first side mission and I was super surprised. Had to help a woman find her dementia ridden grandpa, where I then had a talk with him about his late wife and how he gets to see her (in delusion) when he visits the spot that he proposed to her. Like wtf, this is a SIDE mission? Lol had my cold black heart feeling some emotion out of the blue.
There has never been a spiderman where Peter isn't talking wise. He did it in every comic since the 60's which obviously you are oblivious of. Actual real spidey fans love it and expect it. That's why Garfield was the better Peter in the films because of the quips. And Tom is also the perfect Parker and comic accurate
The quips is what spider-man does. Part of his character. It's not only used to purposely annoy his foes, but it's a nervous tick that helps him not be so nervous while fighting.
Although there were many aspects of the game I liked, I absolutely hated the ending. Spoiler warning: Norman's hate toward the spider-men didn't make any sense to me. I feel like this was their excuse to build up the Green Goblin for the next game, but it felt SUPER forced. I also don't really like how Harry became Venom. Felt forced as well. I thought it would've made more sense for Kraven to connect with the Symbiote since he is already evil and it would align better with Venom's intentions. One other aspect that bothered me during the Mary Jane stealth missions was the fact that she can one shot Kraven's goons, while as Spiderman I punch each guy like 20 times before they can go down. They over-powered Mary Jane. But perhaps the worst part of the story was the ending where Peter is taking a break from being Spiderman, because Miles is Spiderman enough. For one, they constantly needed each other throughout the story. Secondly, the reason why Peter wants to take a break as Spiderman is so he can live a normal life for a change. But now he is in a sense making Miles ruin his own life the same way Peter did. It's not like Miles has that much better of a social life than Peter, so when Miles gladly accepted to take on the sole-Spiderman mantle in his goofiest suit yet, I was pretty shocked. Could they just not simply switch shifts? Try to help one another have a life outside of Spiderman? It just felt like lazy writing. I did enjoy a lot of the game though. But the story was definitely lacking.
The creative director for this series has expressed that this is their first venture into an intellectual property that they didn't originate entirely. Insomniac has a history of creating their own unique IPs like Sunset Overdrive and Ratchet & Clank. Consequently, taking on the task of adapting a beloved character and universe like Spider-Man was quite challenging. Delivering a game based on such a cherished IP, especially when previous Spider-Man games have had mixed reviews, required pleasing both long-time comic series fans and newcomers to the action game genre. The rendition of Spider-Man that Insomniac has crafted feels like a heartfelt homage to the iconic superhero. It impresses with its stunning visuals, well-developed characters, a compelling story, excellent combat mechanics, and top tier swinging mechanics. While some may express a desire for "something more," it's important to clarify what they mean by that.
I love it how people think that this game is shorter than the original when it actually isn't. Yes the 2018 game takes ~33-35h to finish BUT with DLCs, without them it takes ~25h to 100% the game which is the same as Spider-Man 2 and I'd argue the first game is shorter just because the first one has more enemy bases to clear out (12 compared to 4 present in the second one) also crimes are mandatory for 100% completion in the previous title where as in this new release they aren't. So taking all that into account SM2 if compared fairly would be a longer game if the first one didn't have mandatory 20 crimes per district.
25:27 Just wanted to notate that Peter Parker has always been “quipey” or at the very least he is supposed to be. It is an aspect of the character that often gets overlooked. You can still be irritated by it, just know it was an intentional choice.
@@muchlovegambine949 lol, I didn’t see anyone else mention it when I made the comment, and this was specifically for Luke because he thinks that Insomniac changed Peter’s character. Insomniac’s representation of Peter might just be the most accurate that I have seen outside of comics.
@@whatsittoyou4153 No The youtuber is saying How Peter acks Like Tom Holland's Spider-man from the movies making jokes during the fight. But that's a Peter thing, not something Tom Holland
I already see a ton of people say that ‘making jokes is his thing’ but the reason he does it is to essentially hide how scared he is, throwing them off, can’t remember when he said this but it has been my head-canon ever since I read it.
When I played Spider-Man PS4 all I wanted for the 2nd game was to expand into Brooklyn, Queens etc. and to have venom so I’m happy! Would’ve been nice though if they went the RDR2 route where you’ll be swinging and random events happened around the city rather than pinpoints and collection lists.
You having an issue with his constant "quips"... i see it as Peter fighting the negative energy of the situation by making it light hearted and breaking the tension both for himself and for the victims... to allow a sense of ease so he can perform his best...
the entire reason peter cracks jokes while fighting "very seriously" is so he doesnt stress himself out or frighten himself. its his literal character from the comics...
Hey Luke, I don't really understand why you would go on a rant about Spidermans quips when that is a lot of his character in the comics. You can't read a comic where he doesn't say jokes in a serious situation. They are being true to the character of Spiderman when they do that.
I actually dont understand the Jorraptor comments about it "playing safe". This was an extremely well done sequel in the same universe as the one already built. I really want to know what people actually think "not playing safe" would have looked like in this game. Bc the set pieces, the story, the way it interweaves power progression WITH story, the side stories, the way it built on the first game, all of it is great and unexpected. The last quarter of the game I had to keep pausing in the middle of a cutscene bc I needed a second to take in what was happening. Its a fricken spider man game with TWO spidermen(plus a surprise later)....? has that ever happened? Those comments are genuinely frustrating and makes me assume you need some big over the top spectacle to smack you in the face to please you. It is as incredible as it could get in a sequel to the first game, set in New York. He mentioned Baulders Gate, BOW, and like God War? Yeah they have it pretty fricken easy in a fantastical world where they can make up shit. THIS is a Spider man game, and it is awesome, and went above and beyond expectations and quality of a spider man game.
When we saw Marco launch Miles into the clean part of NY, and have him web launch himself back into the fight in less than a minute my jaw dropped 9:26
How could you not be a Spiderman fan? Trash talking during fights was what Spiderman was known for. Ever hear of Static Shock? He trash talked his enemies too, inspired by Spiderman.
I would agree that the minute-to-minute gameplay is similar to the first one; although, I think the web wings add a lot to the traversal (almost too much). But the big set piece moments are amazing in this one where I don’t think they were all that in the fist one. I’m thinking about the opening with sand man, the portal chase with Black Cat, and the guitar hero Mysterium. Just really amazing moments that truly surprise someone who’s only expecting the same as what we got in the first one. I fully expect the reviews to go up as people get further through the story.
The collectibles in this game were really not bad at all. The spidernots were tidius, but all the rest are little mini side quests that really didn't take too long to get them all. I got platinum in about 35 hours.
HONESTLY, can't talk about either without being labeled an xbot or sonypony, the other day I saw a comment saying that the fast travel being fast ruined the game for the, so I simply asked HOW a single optional feature ruined the game for them......got called a Sony pony within 15 minutes by someone else 😐
PC wars are actually worse, lets be honest. Amd vs Intel, Amd vs Nvidia gpu's, linux vs windows vs Mac, 120fps vs 240fps, chrome vs firefox, steam vs gog vs epic. 😂 😎
@@DarrenPlayerOne-At the end of the day you still have a choice in what platform you want to use though. If there's a game that's exclusive to Epic Games then you can still play that game; you don't have to buy a whole new console just to play a specific game.
That one point you made turned me off so much. Like a switch went off. They went with the collectibles for open world but not the unique encounters? The way I remember, it older Spider-Man games had gangs and it's own sub-story line that may have or may have not tied into the main. I want that, with the collectibles, and some interesting "non-spider man game play. I'll wait for the sale.
The writing in this game was really , really bad in my opinion. As well as the general creative direction. The mechanics are great, typical fun stuff when you’re swinging around and handling crimes, but I thought the whole Venom section was insanely underbaked and kinda lame. There were like 2 drops of blood in that whole thing. The whole game just felt very much like it had it’s “kid gloves” on, especially with some of the forced preachy-stuff. My girlfriend was playing and asked me, “why does MJ look so much *uglier* in this than the first game?”. I hadn’t fully noticed it until she pointed it out, I could tell something looked “off” with MJ, but she noticed it immediately. They made her jaw like, super-square. Plus, those MJ missions, my god. They sucked in the first game, and they were just absurd in this one. MJ’s characterization, in general, was just stupid and totally self-indulgent on the developers part in this new one. Not to mention the mission where you play as Miles’ deaf gf, I mean, just why? It’s not fun, it adds nothing to the story, it’s just there for some forced-diversity and nothing more. I really, really liked the first game and the Miles game, but this one, aside from the shiny, new PS5 features, was just kinda lame. Same general enemy types, just people in armor with big shields, always the same types of “groups” of enemies, Kraven was so *thoroughly* wasted as a character in this game, they even managed to somehow waste and ruin a version of Venom played by Tony Todd. The *only* way I can enjoy this game is by freeroaming, and that is only fun for so long. I have also come to hate that they made Spidey able to “fly”. Like, gliding makes perfect sense, the web wings have been a thing for decades, but the wind tunnels make it way too much like full-on flying. This game is also ridiculously short, and they waste SO much time on those typical PlayStation “walk and talk”-type missions. Like the Peter & Harry on bikes mission, or the Coney Island stuff before the action actually happens (the very contrived action), or dumb side missions like the Miles “homecoming date” mission, that takes waaay too long. I thought this game would make me even more hyped for Insomiac’s Wolverine game, but now I’m legitimately worried that it’s gonna turn out to be really lame. If they handle Wolverine like they handled Venom, the violence will be toned-down so much that it will feel out of character. That game needs a pretty hard M-rating, and it doesn’t need Insomniac forcing a ton of stupid politics into it. And I totally agree with you regarding the character’s nonstop talking, Luke. Yes, Spidey has always been full of quips, it’s part of his character, but it’s totally down to the way it’s done in this game. It’s annoying, and the character is always pointing out the obvious to the player, like Pete will say, “I should really turn the knob on this door”, over and over again. It just takes me right out of it. Makes me really miss the days of those weird Spider-Man games like Shattered Dimensions or Web of Shadows. They weren’t perfect, but they feel like they cared more about being interesting. Modern games have a tendency to be SO painfully middling.
I’ve finished around 60% of it. I played the first game and Miles Morales only a few months back. So far I love it. The missions are great. My only problem is some of the side quests are a bit boring. The crystal collection is meh. In the first game you had the backpacks with little stories behind them. Now you have crystals with a mentally ill man mumbling incoherent things. I’ve experienced a few bugs but it was minor like the suits suddenly having rips in the cut scenes even though the health bar is full, some of the enemies looking weird after fighting them and markers/waypoints disappearing for a little bit.
I don’t know why but I had low expectations for this one, I wasn’t really excited. But that opening sequence made me have a stupid grin on my face the whole time.
Luke ffs the game literally has a 91 after 130 reviews. Disconnect yourself from X my brother it isnt a real place. The discourse is a bunch of salty fanboys representing about 0.01% of the populous. This game is going to be the best selling PS5 game by a mile.
I’m at the end of the story. It was a slow start. I don’t mean the opening, which was action packed. But after that, it really slows down for like an hour or two. And after *that* it keeps ramping up to pure insanity. And so I thoroughly recommend it for the sheer spectacle. It’s comic book-y greatness and if you liked the first 2, I don’t think you’ll find much to dislike about this one. Take it with a grain of salt that I don’t do side quests in games. So I speak only from the perspective of sticking with the story with only a couple minor forays into doing something else. But from that storytelling perspective…if you jaw doesn’t drop at some point while playing this, then I don’t even know if you’re human
Peter does the joke cracking to throw off his opponents. It’s a part of his character. There’s a question of who scares you more? Batman who smiles or Spider-Man who stops joking/talking? It’s just in the dna of his character to quip.
Duuude. Spidey's one-liners is an iconic part of the character. Even all the way back in the Raimi trilogy, Peter would throw in snarky quips during fights. Happens constantly in the comics, this is definitely not a Tom Holland specific thing.
People blaming marvel for “quippy characters” is so wierd that’s literally just Spider-Man it’s what he does he cracks jokes not because they’re funny but because it annoys his foes and it’s just what he does, such a bizzare criticism that seemed more about his problems with the MCU tbh lol other than that so cool to hear him appreciate all the work insomniac put in they really put in a lot and it shows!
Spider-man cracking unfunny and dumb jokes has always been part of his character, it's just who he is as a character. And the previous game had the exact same level of writing, there was even a suit power-up that only had a single a purpose and it was for Spider-man to tell dad jokes or have cringe dialogue non-stop and it was one of the better recieved power-ups
Its not just collectathon, symbiote battles, sand battles, mysterio battles, the flame battles, with awesome reveals for spiderman fans at the end of all of them and the spiderbot collection may be the coolest of them all
Since you brought up college essays, yes, they do read them. The essays are how they make the decision when it starts to get down to having only a few spots left and students with identical grades and test scores. If you're a straight A student with a monster SAT score, then maybe they won't even look at your essay, but when it comes to making those "borderline" calls, the essay will make the difference whether you get in or not.
Insomniac reminds me of Santa Monica Studios, Gow 2 on ps2 was crazy (thats pushing hardware to its limits), even Ragnarok being fully optimized for ps4 is crazy
Took me 19 hrs to get to ng+ on Miles(3/4 of the way to plat) on hard difficulty. I did not mess about for more than an hour or so. With that said, I estimate I’ll hit 40-50 hrs before I’m ready to put it to the side to pick back up later. Funny to me how game length here differs by 10 hrs from tuber to tuber. Saw one to claim they got the plat at 25 hours.. I simply can’t believe it.
I managed to get the plat in about that time (edit: on hard more), had basically completed all the side stuff before the final fight story missions. Was a personal mission to get max level before finishing the game 🤣 The side stuff was pretty satisfying to go through though so it was like story mission do one of everything in that area then repeat cycle. It's worth noting this game has the least amount of trophies between the 3 games and most of them are a lower thresholds for completion than the previous 2 games. Defo going back through it again on ultimate so I should get about another 20-30hrs out of it getting me a decent total play time from it before I put it downn for a while!
The way I’ve compared this game so far is looking at the Batman Arkham series- I love playing marvels spiderman 2 but I do feel the could have done way more to the game to make it a 10/10 especially when you compare Arkham asylum to Arkham city the amount of updates they made was insane
I forgot that there was a performance mode. The fidelity mode was so smooth that i didn't need to play it on performance mode. One of the only times where there is no difference between 30 and 60 except for loss of detail in 60.
This game is so awesome I just wish the story was a liiiiitle longer it felt like it went by so fast because I enjoyed every second I even got the platinum trophy in under 30 hours.
In defense of the attempts at funny, after reading a ton of recent Spiderman comics from the past 5-6 years I can say that the character of Spider-man always attempts to be funny or sarcastic and it doesn't always land. But it in many ways can make him endearing because he's such a positive character wouldnt you agree? I'd argue it makes the character appeal more to kids and youth which can only grow the game series, just my take on it. He's not a Ben Affleck batman type he's supposed to be lighthearted and I agree with you sometimes it doesn't land, but I'd say that's just the character of Spiderman in general not just Tom Holland version etc. Always love your videos Luke!
23:28 that’s not a Tom Holland thing, Peter Parker (and miles) do quips in fights. It’s a Spider-Man thing. Plus Peter said in the first game that he quips like that in tense situations as a sort of coping mechanism. Miles probably follows his lead on that. I think mostly all of them are well done in SM2
Spiderman having cringe quips while fighting his enemy to try to get into their head is nothing new. He's always been like this. He's a literal nerd turned superhero.
