In Today's video I show off my new favourite PCVR headset, the Varjo Aero.
From eye tracking, SUPER freaking high res display, sleek design, but high price point. I go over my overall thoughts on the Aero compared to the $300 Oculus Quest 2. Hopefully this video is useful to VR beginners & provides some basic knowledge & tips & tricks along the way.

I do not own any of music, extra video clips images, chroma key, or sound effects used in this video. Or at least most of them, some stuff is mine.
My channel is about VR Content (obviously lol) I've covered many topics on this channel in the past such as PC Building, PC Gaming Knowledge, Gaming News. That can be CPM rates, Industry knowledge, Business knowledge, how to edit, how to build a gaming PC, budget or not. But VR is cooler so I'm probably gonna keep doing that.
I'm like the monkey you send into space for tests. I just come back with the results and give them to you for FREE.

I have one. The distortion problems have been fixed in a recent update, but it requires turning on an "experimental" setting in the Aero Base software. My biggest complains about it now with it now is that there is a little bit of ghosting/blurring when I moved my head around, black levels are not great, and no built in mic. The resolution is amazing, but this is definitely not the end all be all HMD.

@@AdrianoFeria It is the best HMD on the market. The black levels are a bit annoying but in regards to the mic, i'd rather every cent be put into the display rather than the mic. I can buy a good set of headphones with a good mic. I can't but a better display for my headsets.

Give it a few years and these hi-end headsets will come down to home consumer. By the way, next Oculus headset will come at 800-900$ price, at least. No more unprofitable selling even for Zuck. Aero lenses though... so shits on Quest that when you put on Quest again you experience what it means to be blind and what low quality is really like.

I think the blurring at the edges is caused by foveated rendering. This uses the eye-tracking in headsets to only render what you look at in the full specified resolution while the rest of the scene is rendered somewhere below it to increase performance. If you go down to the tech specs of the Aero it states at the bottom the use of its eye-tracking for this. It can also explain the motion blur you experienced because the headset could have been trying to keep up with your eyes, making it seem blurry for a moment. not saying that foveated rendering is bad, but maybe since it is a fairly new technology, we haven't found a way to implement it perfectly.

@@Number494 no, it's due to the lenses. PSVR 1 also had aspheric lenses.... and has the same issue . although the aspheric lenses in this headset are far more premium (they are trying to adjust in software), some uses have reported getting use to it though after a few weeks of play

I turned off FOVeated rendering almost immediately. It made no difference besides the obvious increase to resolution around my eyes. I cut that clarification for time.

I guess the distortion’s due to the fact the distortion for most VR headsets (with their spherical lenses) is corrected by every game out there. Since the lenses themselves already correct this distortion by default, it’s sort of a layered effect leading to the opposite form of distortion.

I feel like the headstrap resembles the bobovr m2 headstrap. It’s very comfortable and better other headstraps such as the elite or other cheaper amazon headstraps… the headset looks beautiful and decently performant. Thank you hip for your honest review like always 👍.

I have always just called it my Quest 1 or 2 even when I had a Rift S that was just a Rift'd no Oculus, I think the only one I called Oculus was the DK2 don't see what the fuss is about it's just a name. 😊

The headset has essentially 2 displays, one for the center one for the peripheral. The center is higher resolution. That can contribute to what you perceive as warping.

Thanks to your review I could finally fix my issue with the cursor moving in the background while I was in vr. They still haven't fix it and a heads up, you should have enabled the distortion fix on the software to fix the edges warping out.

0:51 that remembers me of all the 14 times that I've accidentaly thought my meta 2 controllers could fly (and now the trigger dowsnt wor so good in some games and I also have thumbstick drift sometimes)

I have watched a lot of reviews for this headset, and honestly, this one has been the best. Quite dense with information. So many reviews fail to mention the software, let alone show some screen captures. I want this headset, and could even convince myself to got beyond my VR savings budget up to the 2k price. But not without including controllers, base stations, a mic, and sound. That is another 500 or so on top of the initial 2k asking price. If I am patient until Q4 (edit: forth quarter of the fiscal year, not a new Quest headset), I am hopeful I can get more for less.

@Beren Erdem id rather not spend the price of a samsung refrigerator on a vr headset. The quest is lighter, cheaper, and can be pretty good when linked to a pc. Once headsets like these become cheaper and more available, then yes it will destroy the quest but right now nothing competes with the quest 2’s price and availability.

It's not about price for those looking for high quality, it's about the... high quality (duh), If you care about price, go ahead and pick the cheap stuff, no one's going to shame you. It's the lenses not the cable that are causing the distortion. Those special lenses cause a warping effect and the software in the headset is supposed to pre distort the image to lessen the effect and correct it.

Love the boneworks soundtrack in the BG. Anyway, I tried to use a Magic Leap and didn't get past the "Eye calibration"... So for the time being I have a bad taste off of this tech. I love my quest 1 so far but oh boy is it too heavy...

I've been through 2 index cables, both caused distortion/sparkling after even slight damage to the outer cable similar to the Varjo cable in this video. Hence my caution. That said. I'm not a cable professor geologist gynecologist so I don't know what I'm talking about.

the quest 2 is a horrible steam vr headset with my experiences tho. After a few weeks its only done harm to my brain trying to fix it from just freezing. standalone I do like it. (queality not as good but its fine)

It's likely that the warping comes from the wider display the content may not have the same aspect ratio so it might be stretched to compensate

Aspheric lenses means the curvature of the lens surfaces is not a perfect spherical shape. Meaning it’s not very easy to manufacture, they probably used injection molded optical plastics. Aspheric lenses reduces optical aberrations

I feel like all the problems you state about the index has only happened to a little majority. Cuz for as long as ive had my index. about 1.5 years so for ive only had one issue an it was only in regard to the ear pad for the headphones on it. Never had those pesky preformence-controller issues. hell I even bought 2 pairs of controllers to combat it yet never had those problems. an ive smacked many things while in vr an they still run like new. I think the only real main problem I ever had was for the glare when looking at something really bright.

to be fair, if you already have the index controllers and base stations, at that point you could also just add the htc cosmos elite and htc wireless adapter. given the htc uses wigig technology there is much lower latency and much less compression

The distortion is caused by limitations in video game FOV. The higher the FOV the more stretched the image becomes.

This may be completely wrong, but that word seems to be “a-spheric”, so I assume maybe the curvature is different from other typical lenses or something, which could have helped reduce glare?

I wanted this headset, until I found out about the yet to be out Pimax 12K. I think will be about $400 more than this. And should be, by all is said it should have, make the Varjo Aero look like an Oculus Rift 1, by comparison. Still have to wait till it come out first, and see the reviews on it. Should be interesting.

Here is the thing I could pay 380$ and get and Oculus Quest 2 and an official link cable. This would save me at least 1,620$ dollars not counting other things like controllers you’ll need to buy. So for in most ways the a little bit worse of a headset is a lot better considering the price difference. (I didn’t mention PC VR headset because I think they are to expensive)
