Is the Quest 2 BETTER than a $2k VR Headset?
In Today's video I put the Oculus Quest 2 up against the $2,000 VR headset; The Pimax 8K X.
The Pimax is a PCVR headset and has a 200 degree FOV, dual 4k LCD screens, & is compatible with all steamVR hardware, but it's not without some disastrous faults. Hopefully this video is educational, helps you guys with some tips & tricks/lifehacks regarding both headsets and prevent you from being a true VR noob.

I feel like the fov is the best part since it actually uses our peripheral vision (which is highly overlooked in vr) I just hope more games support it since this is basically a brick wall to the evolution of vr

@GetHip, some points you got wrong, np as its hard to use hmd, but overall very fair review good job: 1. FFR - fixed foveated rendering - it looks wrong in your video like a rectangle, once you changed it you needed to restart steamvr - then its oval and only on periphery 2. for colours make sure you set backlight option ro 100%, if it looks cold you may set only green channels brightness to -1 and keep 0 for other values, also reshade plugin makes games look like index level colours 3. culling on periphery - many games allow to disable it, otherwise you can turn Parallel projection and fix it, it requires experience but it can be overcome 4. for performance i find 8kx better than G2/VP2, I can play dirt rally 2.0 on almost all ultras apart shadows and on 150/120 fov with reshade plugin, it looks spectacular and motion smoothing (should be enabled in pittool and PP turned off) works very well Also if setup properly DCS looks just so cool in this thing

I feel the greatest point to the Pimax is obviously the FOV, the resolution doesn't bother me so much with the Quest. But when I try to increase the FOV on Quest 2 by taking off the face cover, it just feels so much more immersive. That's what they need to do for Quest 3 and do it in a way that minimises motion sickness with maybe blurred border using eye tracking

Man that 200 degree headset is crazy. I have two Quest 2s one 256gb and one 64gb and love them. Being wireless is awesome and being able to play PCVR is great. It is so much better for newbies to be wireless and to be able to take it places and use it. We took our travel trailer to an RV Park and they had a clubhouse and it was awesome to be able to play in that huge area and to play without a puter and the value for $299 or $399 is amazing.

For me a new pimax User most of the Software issues for what I know have been resolved there's alot more support for the pimax headsets. Changing ur colour settings for the lenses is a game changer

The one thing I love about the pimax is the design, it looks so futuristic and like a quality piece of hardware whereas the quest 2 does look a bit cheaply made to me(especially the default strap, the quest 2 was my first personally owned headset so I've had more time to mull over it's design features but that's my opinion right now)

The thing I like most about the Pimax 8k is the visor strip on the front that looks like the visor strip the the Imperial Royal Guard had in Star Wars. Which also looks a bit KotOR Mandalorian too.

I don't know about you, but there's no way I'm gonna spend thousands of dollars for something that doesn't even work very well. I'm glad you make these vids. As someone who plays a lot of beat saber on quest 2 (with Virtual Desktop and Steam VR), the best feature for my use case would probably be the 200-degree FOV. It'd make everything easier to see. Plus manual IPD Adjustment. I can't get a proper IPD on my quest 2.

Well, good fov and stuff sounds awesome, but it's really a bummer sometimes, the fov especially. I like how there are physical volume buttons on it though, coming from a rift s, on which there are none.

My current VR setup is HTC VIVE with Valve Index controllers, it’s my sweet spot because while I do want to upgrade to the Index in the future, the VIVE is compatible with the controllers and also the base stations.

Great review. Looks like the 8k VR works awesome. And the Quest 2 stacks well against it. I guess, for the 8k, they need a bit more work on the software. After how many years, we still, and should, get Windows updates, err security updates? Waiting for the updates to finish is ... time consuming, but presumably worth it. And games software needs time to catch up, please catch up. It's one of the minor annoyances of leaping well ahead of the game. Again, great review.

FINNALY someone has the guts to talk honestly about this thing. People are just praising the fov and sweet spot of this thing like its soooo much better than the index or the Reverb G2 (which i own). It almost gave me the perception that you could look onto the dashboard of a car without any blur. On my Reverb i can read the dash but its a little bit blurry. But you can confirm or deny if this was indeed the case.

I like that you don’t sanitize your jokes or make any attempts to pretend as if you’re putting on a family television show like a lot of these overly uptight youtubers nowadays. I understand when some gaming/tech channels try to present themselves more professionally but it makes it feel like I’m watching someone’s job resume/interview portfolio as opposed to an honest laid back discussion like your channel.

I own both a Pimax 8KX (which I am returning) and Oculus Quest 2 for DCS and I find your review very accurate. I actually prefer the Oculus Quest 2 and find it overall a better headset for this game because of the issues you describe, plus there is a very slight grainyness like a photo taken in low light conditions. The machine I run it on is an AMD Ryzen 9 3900X 12-Core Processor 3.80 GHz, 32 GB RAM, Geforce RTX 3080Ti, and I have to reduce resolution and graphics quality to such an extent that the only benefit I get is a wider FOV at an immense cost to graphics quality and resolution, not to mention the $1,000 dollars + base station + controllers whereas the Quest 2 does an overall better job at actually displaying the warbirds I am trying to shoot at. I had the itch for it when another well-known youtuber said it was so vivid the sunlight was bothering his eyes in the game (total farce); what I appreciate about your videos is that you never seem to have this kind of hype that so many others keep doing.

The reason for the tracking deteriorating overtime is because to batteries you use. Use 1.5 volt batteries, not 1.2 volt.

I think the reason that the blurriness on the outer areas of the FOV are great is because the human eye works the same way the farther away from the focus of your eyesight the less data your optical nerve sends from your retina so it's working like an eye in a way not exactly but it makes sense.

Being able to use the base station tracking on the Pimax allows you to upgrade later with new controllers or Vive trackers. That's a big plus for me

This is so late but I wanted to mention a few things that Pimax apparently didn't make you aware of and to provide information to prospective buyers.. First - The Pimax Experience software. This is in beta and is a separate piece that loads after pitools. This includes so much more functionality than pitools and it's in VR. Here is where you have your settings for brightness and colors letting you set it to look as good as any other headset on the market. It's also a launcher and profile editor for your games and it will collect and launch your games from steam, oculus, vive etc. It also includes a mediocre, but usable virtual desktop. Finally for game support, enabling parallel projection will fix many compatibility issues - but at a performance cost of 20-30%. You can also run it at a lower FoV of 150 or 120 degrees. 150 still looks great and 120 will put you on par with the Index. Finally they are working on 90Hz for the Native 4k. Also I didn't see it mentioned, but you can run at upscaled half resolution at 114Hz. Don't bother with the hand tracking or eye tracking modules. There just isn't enough support for hand tracking and from what I have seeing in reviews, the eye tracking is less than stellar.

I like the 4k displays per eye, but I'm not too enthused about the blurring of the sides on the fov when combined with the blurring the devs do in the games, and the blurring my own eyes do naturally.
